Top Amazon Releases 01/04 – Catch Up Edition

Slim pickins this week, folks. So excuse us while we pepper in a few movies and games that came out right before the New Year into this week’s list of new releases. You’ll also find a list of upcoming games below and their preorder incentives.

As always, purchasing ANYTHING through the Amazon links below costs you nothing and supports Laser Time. And what the hell?! Comment on the article and we’ll give one of you lucky bastards a free $20 Amazon gift card!

I haven’t been able to dig into this because of an extended, PC-less Holiday in the swamps of Florida, but damned if everyone in my office isn’t enjoying the ever-lovin’ Sith out of this. On a more romantic note, this game dragged several of my friends from back home out of a long gaming dormancy, and even better still, led to several elongated, passionate drunken converations on the nature of modern gaming from several buddies who’d thought they’d abondon the medium altogether until this game came along. I love that about MMOs – it keeps those dear to me in touch and playing together. Find the Star Wars: The Old Republic Collector’s Bundle here.

Okay, Justified is pretty goddamned amazing. It’s not quite like anything on TV, actually. Few cable series bother with isolated one-off episodes anymore, but that’s kind of where this Peabody Award-winning series excels. And what it has for a season-long story arc stars Walton Goggins as a backwoods white supremacist, and that should have The Shield fans doing backflips.

V for Vendetta / Watchmen / Constantine
Constantine aside, I could watch these movies over and over again. Disregarding Watchmen’s altered ending, I find this movie fantastic. Infinitely rewatchable. And V for Vendetta… you could call it a slightly aniquated product of its time, but it’s amazingly well done, and the fact that it’s one of the most scathing indictments of a then-current political regime depicted in a mainstream film makes it an amazing ass time capsule. Plus, this fine little Alan Moore trilogy in HD is only $22!

I can’t wait to check this one out. Not only do I love a good Outbreak movie, this one’s partially set in my fair city of San Francisco! And if you’re a guy who likes to troll Metacritic – and I know I am – this is pretty much Steven Soderbergh’s best reviewed film in ten years.

Mario Kart 7

After Mario Kart Wii, I thought I was done with the franchise for good. Thankfully, this title brought back the warm n’ fuzzies by not babying up the difficulty and adding a little more depth to the aformentioned party game. Unfortunately, I haven’t had much time to dig into this one since I’m currently balls deep into aceing the outrageously phenomenal Super Mario 3D Land. But I fully intend dive back in right after I kick the shit out of EVERYTHING with Luigi.

Midnight in Paris

Woody Allen’s work is something I assumed would never crossed paths with Laser Time, and maybe it shouldn’t. But I was brought up on the man’s work, and love it when he surprises everyone with a gem after a string of annual stinkers. Plus, my undying love for Bottle Rocket will always extend a bit to Owen Wilson, especially when he decides to be in something that doesn’t completely suck.

The Warrior

I’ll watch anything to see Tom Hardy looking sexy again. And intelligible again! After the Dark Knight Rises prologue… I passed on this one thinking it looked like a rip-off of The Fighter, or Rocky, or some fan-ficy picture intended for MMA fans to run batches over, but apparently I was wrong. The reviews for this one have been stellar. Seriously, go watch Hardy in Bronson and Inceptionthen try and tell yourself you wouldn’t watch Hollywood’s newest badass in just about anything.

Patapon / Locoroco Dual Pack
Jesus Christ… and the PSP goes out with a whimper! Several of the greatest games available only on Sony’s soon-to-be retired handheld have been bundled together for the ridiculously low price of $14.99! They’re all good shit, but I absolutely refuse to invest Dollar One in the PSP at this point. However, if your broke as shit, and see yourself remaining that way for the foreseeable Vita-bound future, here’s something to buy… I guess? Also available: MotorStorm: Arctic Edge & Twisted Metal: Head On Dual Pack and Hot Shots Golf: Open Tee & Hot Shots Tennis: Get a Grip Dual Pack.

Archer Season 2
Goddammit, this show rules! If you were ever a fan of Sealab 2021 or Frisky Dingo (or think James Bond is conceptually ridiculous and worthy of mockery) you owe it to yourself to check out this half-hour FX show from the same animators. And goddamn, Jon Benjamin? What I wouldn’t give to have that man come over to my house and yell at me while I do sit ups… bliss!

    1. You’re missing out, then. The first season’s on Netflix Streaming and/or on torrent sites- er, I mean, on…

Apparently, the show’s creator, Adam Reed, doesn’t have a good track record of not going apeshit and getting into heated arguments with the companies paying for his shows, hence the reason his previous two only had two seasons apiece(?) (All that is hearsay, so don’t be too worried).

As for H. Jon Benjamin, aside from his new show “HJB has a Van”, which I haven’t seen, Aisha Tyler (that hot black chick in the post image) has a podcast, the first episode of which features HJB himself. The last 20 minutes feature an insane shit story, which I know both the LT crew and fans will enjoy.

      1. Archer is very clearly linked to Sealab and Frisky Dingo, absolutely worth watching by pretty much anyone who’s liked anything on Adult Swim.

  1. Jon Benjamin is going to be the next omnipresent voice actor and I’m totally fine with it.

    1. Not omnipresent enough, I say – it’s time for Nolan North to pass on the torch and make H. Jon Benjamin the most popular video game voice actor. Imagine that heavenly voice coming out of the larynx of your favorite Video Game Character X.

  2. Need to try out Mario Kart. Haven’t plated one in a while and that blu ray triple pack looks so God damned good except for the craptacular Constantine

    1. Tis true! They are on a bit of a roll right not, ain’t they? And speaking of FX, I must reiterate that The Shield might be one the best shows of all time. I encourage everyone to check it out

      1. Godammit Chris yes to the Shield. I can’t seem to convince people to watch this show! I’ve converted 3 or 4 people. WATCH THIS SHOW FROM BEGINNING TO END PEOPLE!

  3. You say slim pickings but I love what you gave us to work with this week Chris! I’ve been meaning to check out Archer as I was a huge fan of Sealab and Frisky Dingo, and hell yes I’m ready to see Tom Hardy and his beautiful abs again! I just realized yesterday that he played the Picard clone villain in Nemesis years ago and it nearly made me sick how skinny and freaky lookin’ he was in it:/.

  4. Watchmen? Cool! V for Vendetta? Awesome! Constant…? Wuh?

Never knew that was an Alan Moore joint. I actually acquired a digital copy a while back to rewatch it. It’s a fun movie to watch – Keanu Reeves pulls off a nice emo demon hunter – but it doesn’t really belong on the same physical disc as the other two.

    1. I was also surprised Constantine was an Alan Moore joint, having read most of his comics and seen the movies. It was crap, though, unlike most of his stuff.

  5. I was disappointed in Midnight in Paris. I like Woody Allen, and it wasn’t as bad as his bad movies, like Small Time Crooks, but it didn’t catch me.
