Top Amazon Deals for January 17th

Steering you towards the week’s best media releases and upcoming video games on the cheap…

Once again, we’re counting down the best bang for your buck at the web’s leading retailer. And once again, it’s a pretty ho-hum week, especially in terms of video games. Although we must again stress that ANYTHING you purchase through our Amazon links, as in not necessarily what we’re linking to, costs you nothing and nets Laser Time a small support commission. And in addition to listing upcoming pre-order bonuses and cash back, we’re also listing upcoming daily sales for drastically reduced games below.

The Ides of March
As much as I wish I could say I’m growing weary of George Clooney’s politically-driven “Liberal Guilt Saga,” I’m most certainly not, and when the man chooses to helm a picture it’s because he has something to say and it’s usually worth listening to. I haven’t seen this one, but Good Night and Good Luck is one of my favorite films of the last decade – dare I say one of the more important or powerful?! – so you can bet your ass I’ll be seeing this one.

The Tuskegee Airmen
If you’re like me and saw the trailer for Red Tails and said “Didn’t I see that on HBO like 20 years ago?” you were not wrong. George Lucas did not, however, and he’s finally gotten his Tuskegee  Airmen pet project off the ground in the best possible way: by letting someone other than him direct! I recall liking this HBO production, yet it’s strange that this new theatrical version features a slightly less impressive cast (although both Tuskegee movies star Cuba Gooding Jr.!) Whatever, this one stars Breaking Bad‘s Bryan Cranston, and given the racial message and his whiteness, I can only assume he’s playing a bigot. That should be worth the price alone!

The forgotten John Hughes movie! This was one of THREE films released in 1991 penned by the late director we’ve exalted on Laser Time, and I like it quite a bit. At the time, it was my generation’s only proof that Ed O’Neill wasn’t exclusively Al Bundy, and a young Ethan Embry amazingly pre-channels Christian Bale, making for what could be construed as the perfect depiction of a young Bruce Wayne if he were a complete asshole.

Bucky Larson: Born to Be a Star
Unlike professional film critics, I didn’t expect greatness, not even of the juvenile comedic type, out of this movie. But the fact that this film, about an moron with a small dick trying to make it in porn, landed on so many “Worst of 2011” lists means I have to see it now.  Plus, I’ve always liked Nick Swardson, and even met him recently. Nice guy!

Gran Turismo 5 XL Edition
As the most notable game of the week, I feel like I should be let down. The Turismo series has bored me in recent years, but the fact that this steeply discounted version, billed as the “Ultimate Edition” of the game, contains all the added downloadable features Sony tried to nickel-and-dime players for, makes it worth noting. For $39.99, this version contains all the improvements and updates of the last year (Spec 2.0?) and hooks you up with a $20 voucher for further DLC. Not bad…

Having recently become a more PC oriented gamer, I’m loving how apt developers are to drastically discount prices on full game downloads. Unlike the static price of physical game discs, publishers seem more willing to dramatically reduce the costs to gamers, such is the case this week with EA and every day Amazon’s letting go of some their biggest titles at bargain prices.

Tuesday: Medal of Honor$6.99
Wednesday: Battlefield: Bad Company 2$6.99
Thursday: Crysis Maximum – $7.99
Friday: Bulletstorm – $6.99
Saturday: Crysis 2 – $9.99
