Prototype 2  360  |  PS3
I really loved the first Prototype, and there’s plenty more to love in Prototype 2. All the open-world, tendril-stabbin’ savagery returns, although only after a fairly slow start.  You start out as human for a bit, a new character names Sgt Heller, who’s unfortunately not even as compelling as the already bland Alex Mercer from the original game. And while I haven’t had a thorough playthrough, I can certainly see some folks taking issue with not a whole lot being altogether different from the first game after three years or so. I highly encourage you to peep GamesRadar’s review. Mikel did the text, but that’s me in the video review! Also available in a premium Blackwatch Collectors Edition!

Contraband
For years, the only “Contra Band” in my life was The Minibosses! Then along came this Mahky-Mahk Waahbeg movie and… you know, I totally see how that dude got his nickname after visiting Massachusetts. Seriously, say it out loud with a Boston (Bwostun) accent. Doesn’t that feel great?! Oh wait, the movie! Yeah, it looks terrible.

Risen 2: Dark Waters
I played this briefly, and it was pretty fun. An open-world pirate game with a shit-ton of powers, tropical beasts, clever missions, and violent ways to dispose of swarthy bilge rats! I vaguely recall shooting a crocodile in the face while torturing a gorilla with a mercenary parrot, so if that’s not an endorsement I don’t know what is. The mega-delayed console editions were a looking a little rough when I saw it a few months ago, but the PC version was pretty goddamned beautiful.

Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood: Complete Collection One
Guys… “Complete Collection One” is irritating oxymoron. A disc containing a single episode would qualify under that stupid moniker, and pretty much any one thing of any thing you buy counts as the 1st volume towards a “Complete Collection.” Sorry to get so frustrated over semantics. I’m not much of an anime fan, but Full Metal Alchemist has come highly recommended to me from very trusted sources for years, and I’ve been trying to find the right set to pick up the series with. As I understand, Brotherhood is a remake of the original series. Does anyone out there know if it’s worth starting with this high-def remake, or the original series? Oh, FMA: The Stars of the Milos Movie also came out on Blu-ray today along with the series, FYI.

Shifting Worlds
Don’t you love a game that tells you exactly what it is?! I’ve never even heard of this thing but I’m 95% positive I know exactly what it is from the title. A Point-A-to-Point-B puzzle game with dazzling 3D effects? Prove me wrong, game I’ve never heard of, prove me wrong.

Ultimate Avengers Collections (3 movies)
Just in time for You Know What, Marvel’s releasing HD collections of everything involving the animated ensemble characters from The Avengers.  You got this, as well as Marvel Animated 3-pack (including Planet Hulk!) re-releasing on Blu-ray for ridiculously cheap prices. While I’ve always loved Marvel much more than DC, I honestly hate how shitty these direct-to-DVD films look in comparison to DC’s consistently amazing animated output. Whereas Superman, Batman, etc., seem to have no problem tossing out nastier original tales, the Marvel stuff looks cheap and juvenile by comparison.

Binary Domain  360  |  PS3
Wow, this is out his week? All I remember about this game is that is was one of the more blatant Gears of War ripoffs I’ve ever witnessed. Haven’t seen hide nor hair of it for almost a year, which is always a good sign. Buy it now if you want to ensure Sega stays in business for another year.

  1. I would really love to put that $20 gift card toward one of those great pre-orders (though a Laser Time link of course).

  2. Holy Crap! Thanks for letting me know about the Mass Effect 3 deal. I thought i was gonna have to wait a year for the price to drop before I could play it. Seriously, thanks alot. 😀

  3. Binary Domain came out in late Feburary, and don’t dismiss it. It’s a Gears game yes, but there’s a huge amount of personality and it’s really well done.
If you need any more convincing, I’ll just say this: FRENCH. ROBOT. SQUADMATE.

    1. Yeah, it’s a little rough, but it’s got a surprising amount of originality tucked in there, I felt. A good game to grab on the cheap, then.

  4. Looks like a decent week of releases. I would definitely recommend Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood. I’ve watched the whole series and it was very good. My wife doesn’t care too much for anime but she enjoyed watching the entire thing with me.

  5. The two FMA series go very different directions with their story, and the remake assumes that you’ve seen the original one, so all of the plot in common between the two gets rushed through. Also Canada.

  6. Both the original FMA series and FMA: Brotherhood are well worth your time. Overall, Brotherhood is by far the better series because it closely follows the manga and the story feels a lot more cohesive. The animation is better, character arcs are handled more appropriately and the series wraps up with a nice sense of closure. However the original series is still fantastic and provides you with a much better portrayal of the earlier parts of the manga, which Brotherhood quickly rushes through. When it diverges from the manga in later parts of the series, things get kind of muddled.

It’s hard to decide which one to start with, but I’d have to say the original series because it is a far better introduction to the franchise. You’ll enjoy Brotherhood even more with a heightened knowledge of the characters and universe.

Oh and Chris? If FMA makes you hate anime a little less (it should), do yourself a huge favor and check out “Redline”. It’s a gorgeous film that took seven goddamn years of a man’s life to create.

  7. I’d love to shop through amazon for you, but I don’t have enough money for that so instead I’ll donate to keep you guys afloat. A small but no less supportive donation. 😀
