The Hunger Games
A pretty fun little movie. Of course, how can one be a fan of video games and not get behind a fun, well realized tale of a society that pits children against one another in an annually televised bloodsport? It’s got timers, desensitized violence, and even loot drops! The ceaseless wave of anti-Twilight YouthLit rage lead me to believe I’d hate this inevitable phenomenon. Happy to say it most certainly did not!

The Lorax
You know… I wouldn’t have had a problem buying this on Blu-ray sight unseen if they’d have just included the original Lorax animated short. It would have easily taken the buyer’s remorse out of a needlessly shitty movie, which is generally the case when 20-page children’s stories consisting of mostly picture are adapted to +90 minute films meant to shamelessly capitalize on something most people can’t help but remember fondly. Honestly, I’m curious to see this, but I can’t really imagine any result that isn’t horrifying.

Jaws
A lot of folks just a smidge over the age of Laser Time’s hosts love to exalt this little film like it was the second coming of Christ. I mean I like it just fine, but it’s gushed over with a near religious reverence, which we generally reserve for talking about Jurassic Park or Terminator 2. And that’s what I love about Jaws. As a film fan, I respect the movie far more than I appreciate it, and that’s why I love it. I understand what it did, what it paved the way for, and the a name it made household. I’d almost never feel the need to throw it on the tubez, but I’ll sure as shit watch it just about any time it’s on. Better still, this high-def remaster contains a bevy of kickass supplementals including a full-length documentary featuring new interviews with amazing people like Steven Spielberg and Richard Dreyfuss. Okay, WILL BUY!

Persona 4 Arena
A glorious, unexpected work of Persona fan service and a pretty great fighter to boot! We won’t pretend to be pretend to be a 100% up on our Megami Tenseis, but this is gorgeous looking brawler that looks and plays like nothing else out there, and strangely enough, is somewhat more accessible than actual Persona games.

Sleeping Dogs  360  |  PS3
Remember the True Crime series for PS2? Barely? Us too! Remember that reboot set in Hong Kong Activision canceled a few years back? Possibly? Well, Square’s picked it up, given it an arguably dumb title… and damned if the results aren’t pleasing the hell out of most critics so far. Good on Square, because this seemed like one helluva risk.

The Last Story
Gotta love that the last Wii game most of us will ever look twice at is fittingly called “The Last Story.” Whether or not it’ll reach its audience… we’ll see. JRPG fans pretty much begged Nintendo to bring this thing stateside, well after the game was released earlier in Japan and Europe, and they happily got their wish. Now, let’s see if everyone who signed the petition and left nasty tweets and/or comments goes out it buys it. It’s kind of your duty now, people.

Darksiders II  360  |  PS3
The sequel to the best damned Zelda ripoff happening on PS360 (not a slam) has finally arrived after what felt like an agonizingly long wait. Fortunately, it looks to have been worth it judging by the review scores. Take the reigns of Death, one of, I don’t know… 70 Horseman of the Apocalypse. Joking. But we’re curious to see if if THQ can actually release the next two games before we’re all rocking PlayStation 4s and Xbox 720s.

Adventures in Babysitting
I can barely remember anything about this movie, other than  thinking Elizabeth Shue was the hottest female ever forged, and that, thanks to the little girl, this was the most mainstream Thor would ever be with the movie going world. What a difference a quarter of a century makes! And they’ve happily embraced the time gone by by emblazoning the years across the cover. Bold!

Clue
Remember how stupid we thought the idea of the Battleship movie was? You know, even before it shit the bed. “Why would anyone be stupid enough make a movie out of a board game?” Well, sonny boy, they actually did is over two decades earlier and it was pretty damned stellar. A true comedic “farce” if there ever was one!

Grimm: Season One
Boy, Oh Boy! The first season of Grimm! I know not a thing about this show. But I do know a guy named Grimm! And that’s got to count for something, right? (Apologies. our Catch Up Edition was also created under tremendous haste.)

Dexter: The Sixth Season
I bowed out of these religious-toned season early on, although I can’t remember why… I’m not sure if it was due to something I disliked or just genuinely being done with Dexter. Any thoughts from you guys? Is this season worth diving back into or should I just give up entirely?

The Raid
This is the movie I’m most dying to see! I know nothing about except what the trailers showed: An elite group of cops stab skulls through 30 stories of bad guys. And quite frankly, that’s all I fucking need to know!

CAPE CRISIS RECOMMENDS:

48 thoughts on “Top Amazon releases for Aug 14th – CATCH UP EDITION

  1. When my next paycheck arrives, I shall purchase MORE through Laser Time. For now, I’m gonna just comment and say I missed LT and CC this past week.

  2. I need to pick up the 9th trade of scalped. That is such a good series. Game wise I am waiting for Borderlands 2 to fill my bloody need.

  3. I really want to get Darksiders 2 but im playing through Borderlands right now. Might just wait for it to go on sale, but by then a bunch of other games will be out.

  4. I missed cape crisis and laser time this week 🙁
Also adventures in baby sitting still holds up today, the raid was really really fun and I bought the bond 50th through LT EVEN though I’ve yet to get that coveted 20$ off.

  5. The Raid was probably the best action film in a long time, just a perfect action film. Also, Dexter S6 is pretty much pointless besides the last 10 seconds.

Lastly, where is Community Season 3? It released today on DVD (picked up my copy for $19.99) and I was sure there would be a post today as you guys are big Community fans.

  6. I really enjoyed this season of Dexter. The religious undertones really weren’t as extreme as you might think, and Colin Hanks is an excellent antagonist. Not only that, but the last episode has two huge reveals and a fantastic cliffhanger.

  7. I really need to get into the Persona franchise… I’ve heard wonderful things about the writing, story, and characters, but for some reason I’ve just never picked one up. Persona 4 Arena looks great, and everything I’ve heard about it seems stellar, but I feel like I need to get familiar with the rest of the franchise first. OFF TO ADVENTURE!

The lack of Community: Season 3 confuses me, although I see someone above me has pointed that out already. I know how much you guys love that show…

  8. Wow I feel so out of the loop on this one. Probably the only things that interest me are; Darksiders II (though I have yet to play the first one as it sits neatly in my drawer all wrapped up in plastic), Sleeping Dogs and that is all. I would love to donate again or purchase stuff through your store, but I am both unemployed and in Canada.

  9. I love that you guys do stuff like this. Currently low on funds but will pre-order some games very soon through you.

  10. The religious aspect of last season of Dexter didn’t affect me–I still loved it. It wasn’t preachy because the main character was agnostic and thought anyone can believe in anything. It wasn’t the best season but it still kept me going. highly recommended that anyone should watch Dexter.

  11. I picked up Sleeping Dogs today. What a great decision. I’ve barely been able to put it down so far. There are a few very minor problems, but I hate nitpicking. Overall I’ve been extremely impressed so far.

As far as Dexter goes, I could understand being a bit bored with season 6 for the first few episodes. The show had slowed down after season 4 ended, and after the first few boring religious themed murders I almost gave up. After a couple of episodes it really picks up though. Colin Hanks does a great job with his role and the story lines get more and more interesting. The season also ends with one of the biggest cliffhangers ever in the show’s history.

Anyway, I missed you guys this week so it’s good to see you back.

  12. As a movie buff, I feel like I need to own Jaws, despite having no real enthusiasm for it. I mean, it’s an excellent film, but not on my pedestal.

But still. I must own it. Is this strange?

And to everyone who hasn’t picked up Scalped: pick up Scalped it is the bestest. Gonna miss it when it’s gone!

  13. I have clue on dvd, doc from back to the future is professor plum, the pricipal from sabrina the teengae witch is colonel mustard and Ted curry is just awesome.

  14. Dexter season 6 SUHHHHCKED, but dammit if I’m not anxiously waiting for the next season… even though it’s probably going to suck even harder. Damn you hope, dammn yoouu!

  15. Elisabeth Shue kindled my appreciation for the female aesthetic, along with Lea Thompson in Howard the Duck.

  16. I know it’s not an amazon link, but Best Buy has a collector’s edition of the Hunger Games for currently $30 which includes the Blu-ray and DVDs of both the movie and Special Features and comes with a digital copy. Unfortunately it looks like Lionsgate is jumping the “amazing” Ultraviolet bandwagon. Why can’t we just get a good old iTunes file like we always used to?

  17. An excessively large paycheck on Friday might be leading my towards a Persona 4 arena purchase. Looks gorgeous and easy enough to pick up the mechanics.

  18. I now respect you less as a human being for saying something mildly decent about Clue. Go fuck yourself forever, Chris.

  19. Just picked up Iron Man: Extremis on Hank’s recommendation, along with an issue of The Ultimates 2 that I needed to finish my collection. Now I just have to wait for it to get here; I’m too cheap to pay for shipping, so I always go for Super Saver. Maybe I should just get Prime…..

  20. I couldn’t recommend Persona 4 Arena enough. I was never too huge a fan of the RPG’s, though I enjoy them well enough. P4A is GORGEOUS and a ton of fun to play. It’s far more accessible as a fighter than Street Fighter, too, which is great for people who enjoy fighting games, like me, but aren’t that great at SF’s more complicated motions.

  21. That P4A is really good/fun no matter what level of Persona fan you is.
Last Story is already pre-ordered thru Laser Time.
Actually, both of those I bought thru you.
Now I want The Raid and Darksiders.
    Wow August.

  22. Spiderman ends of the earth is pretty spiffy in my opinion so check that one out. I’m conflicted though, Darksiders II or pre-order Borderlands 2 or Transformers!? Gah! Also, lasertime is awesome!

    1. Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand the winner is Darksiders II, mainly because I may be living in Thailand by the time Borderlands II comes out and I needed entertainment today. Also lasertime is still awesome(Cape crisis too, and that vmpire thingy)

  23. Really lovin’ Persona 4 Arena so far. And I bought Jurassic Park Trilogy and Back To The Future Trilogy (blu-rays both) through you guys to boot!

  24. Damn this is a crazy month. I want probably 2 of those games besides Last Story that I already ordered plus Community and The Raid looks great. Damn its good to be a nerd.

  25. Persona 4 Arena is craaazzy good
The story mode is good for a fighting game and it’s one of those games where it’s hard to be mad to lose at
