Vidjagame Apocalypse 29 – Concepts Evolved

VGA29

For no other reason than that a listener suggested it, we spend a fat chunk of this week’s episode dissecting five games that changed radically during development, often into (or away from) something that completely defied our expectations — and, in a few cases, changed the course of gaming history. (Thanks, Odie Esty!) Since this is also the biggest week for retail game releases in a while, there’s quite a bit of talk about Saints Row IV, Splinter Cell: Blacklist and The Bureau: XCOM Declassified (among others), along with a look at your favorite indie/smaller-budget/download-only games.

Question of the Week

What’s your favorite weapon of 2013, whether in a game already released or one due out soon?

Please try to make note of which podcast the donation is going to so maybe we can get some new equipment and thank the right people for all their support. Seriously, the laptop we edit this show on is one choking breath away from combustion.

  1. Can’t wait to listen to this through my earholes.

As a side note, thank you very much for continuing to record this show. Each week is better than the last. The only suggestion I can make is quite odd, but bear with me: go on more tangents.

  2. I have two, for the serious, it’s the skyhook from Bioshock Infinite. The design of it is incredible and I constantly use it when I am out of ammo. It also shares the same name with an Australian 70’s rock band (Youtube Horror Movie by Skyhooks it’s pretty good).

For the silly, it’s the Dubstep Gun from Saints Row IV, though I have to wait until September 12th to play it (thanks government), from what i’ve seen in demos it looks pretty radical considering how much I hate dubstep.

  3. Favourite weapon had to be the Blood Dragon you get to ride at the end of FC3:DB. That was the best end to a game i think i can remember, especially all the shit it said as you rode it. I was in tears.

  4. QOTW: My favorite weapon of this year is the dubstep gun from Saints Row IV, theirs just a simple and endearing pleasure about feeding my enemies/pedestrians the WUBBY DUBBY!! On another note keep up the good work with this awesome podcast guys/gals I listen intently every week, it really helps during the slow days at work!!!

  5. QOTW: Rise of the Triad’s Excalibat, a super baseball bat that while can be used to simply bash enemies into pools of blood, you can also launch an explosive volley of baseballs. Makes no sense but neither does the game.

  6. Monster hunter 3 ultimate, gunlances, I enjoy the combination of being able to stab a Giant monster with an over sized lance and then being able to shoot them with said lance, iz vary kool.

  7. QOTW: Does Batman count as a weapon? If so, then Batman from Arkham Origins, because with each new trailer he looks like more and more of a bad ass and we all know how great the combat from the first two was (here’s hoping it doesn’t get screwed with too much).
Otherwise, the bow from Tomb Raider because that was extremely fun to use and made me feel like an utter bad ass.

  8. QOTW: The High Frequency Blade In Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance. Because no weapon is more badass than one that allows you to slice anything apart with surgical precision and with sch ease that you can just cut your enemies into quite literally, thousands of pieces.

    1. Oh shit, didn’t realize that stopping the page milliseconds after pressing send still made the comment go trough, my apologies ^^;

Don’t suppose there’s any way to erase these…?

  9. Guys, that commercial break was fucking fantastic. Please keep brining the raccoon back! er… or rather, please keep allowing him to sneak by towards the mic 😛

  10. Great episode.

Here’s my view on Kinect: The first one sold 24 million units, set a Guinness World Record, and was implemented into many popular games. And it sucked. We were promised the world with the first Kinect, and despite the efforts of some of the best developers such as Bioware, Ubisoft, and Bethesda, it brought us nothing worthwhile. Baseless wishful thinking isn’t enough to make us trust spending an additional $100 in the hopes it won’t suck for the second time. That’s my opinion on it.

  11. QOTW: Don’t know if this counts, but the possession vigor from Bioshock Infinite was my favorite weapon of the year. I say this mostly because of the brutally hilarious suicide that inevitably followed when it’s effects wore off, especially when the victim was wielding a rocket launcher.

  12. On the topic of games that were radically changed from their original concept, you idiots forgot to mention the classic space opera, MACE GRIFFIN: BOUNTY HUNTER. Early screenshots and promotional materials showed our titular hero wearing a chinaman hat and like a poncho thing. All this was scrapped in favor of the traditional handsome man space marine aesthetic, making the game completely unplayable and even unbuyable. I did not buy or play.

QOTW: The only 2013 release I’ve played so far is Far Cry 3:Blood Dragon. There are some nice lasers, sure, but the finest weapon is the AJM9000, a fun and faithful recreation of Robocop’s burst pistol. It’s name is even a reference to the Robocop himself, Alex J. Murphy.

  13. The flickers and stuff in AC1 were about surveillance cameras looking at desmond, not an animus hint. But at this point we know that someone is reliving Desmond’s ancestor’s memories through his DNA in AC4. There’s nothing to indicate that anyone was living his memories in the rest of the series tho.

  14. raiden’s high frequency blade was my favorite this year. just seeing him chop up a metal gear with no restrain was amazing to watch and play.

  15. Honestly…the Path of Wisdom outfit that came in the new Mark of the Ninja DLC.

Because it replaces the sword with a non-lethal knockout. Which is makes getting through levels without killing anyone(a favorite activity of mine in stealth games) vastly less frustrating.

  16. I love me some Vidjagame weapons, favorite from this year would be the High Frequency Blade from Metal Gear Rising. Its everything you want in a light saber to be plus the weeaboo-ness of being a katana. Without it MGR would of just been a sub-par DMC clone, it made the game special

Also the Special Edition came with a Sword Lamp. A. SWORD. LAMP.

  17. My favorite weapon of 2013 is not out yet. It is the Jackdaw, the ship from Assassin’s Creed IV, because if it is just the same as the Aquila from Assassin’s Creed III, if it is more… I will play nothing else. I probably will never set a foot on shore, just sailing around endlessly. The Aquila was easily the best part of Assassin’s Creed III and I am super excited about this game simply because of the sailing. Ubisoft nailed how a sailing ship simulation should be and it really makes me wish people would do more age of sail area games with that kind of warfare. The Napoleonic sea battles are criminally ignored.

  18. In Anarchy Reigns, Mathilda wears a stylish belt that looks like an accessory which every other character in absurd Japanese games tends to wear. The difference, however, is that Mathilda’s “belt” is actually a whip… which is actually a giant bat which projects spikes from it. This isn’t just your ordinary run of the mill belt-whip-bat, it’s massive, brutally painful, color coordinated, and unlike most baseball bats, it doesn’t require the user take performance enhancing drugs.

When Mathilda isn’t slapping the shit out of her opponents, she’s swinging for the fences with this badass, bitch beating, baseball bat.

  19. I don’t think I have seen my favorite weapon of this year. I expect to be amazed by something nasty and awesome in South Park. I’m putting myself in a blackout for that game. I want to make sure all the humor is fresh to me… besides the Nagasaki. I’m ready to do that to paper children right now.
