Daredevil, Luke Cage, Iron Fist and Jessica Jones coming to Netflix

?????????????

Wait. What?

Yep, today Marvel and Disney announced four separate miniseries starring some of the company’s most popular “street level” heroes – Daredevil, Luke Cage, Iron Fist and Jessica Jones.

Y’all know who DD is. Y’probably know who Iron Fist is via Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 and many may know Luke Cage as a recent frontman for Bendis’ reign on the various Avengers books. But Jessica Jones? WELL!

Alias_Vol_1_21

She also sprang from Bendis’ 2000s efforts, beginning with Alias #1 – no relation to the once-popular show. She grew up surrounded by superheroes and either idolized or romanticized about them… and then one day radiation flies all over her and blah blah blah she gets some boilerplate powers. BUT the cool thing is that after years of so-so heroin’, she gives up and instead decides to run a detective / private eye business. So yeah, an interesting character to put on TV.

And that’s the real reason this rocks – none of these characters really merit a movie. That is to say, they work much better as lower budget, gritty, “atmosphere” outings than overblown and massively budgeted fracases. More importantly though, who will play all these characters?

Oh yeah, the real surprise is that after these four miniseries run their course (13 episodes, presumably carpet-bombed onto Netflix a la Arrested Development) they’ll all join forces in The Defenders. Which is interesting for two potentially contradictory reasons.

1) Defenders are a team of “misfits,” more or less, usually not having a real team dynamic and refreshing its roster quite often.

2) Even though the team is very loose, Dr Strange has just about always been a figurehead, along with Namor and Silver Surfer. Hulk sometimes, too.

So it’s interesting because while this new Defenders team really is a bunch of solo acts that typically work alone (save Iron Fist and Luke Cage – “Heroes for Hire”) – there’s no mention of Strange, Namor or the Surfer. Either way, exciting stuff and VERY COOL news for the future. With SHIELD, the movies and now Netflix shows all inhabiting the same world, we are so very very close to seeing the entire Marvel U represented in some way – and it all connects.

Now just gimme a good god damn Ghost Rider!

  1. Ah, here we go! Thanks for picking up the slack Mr. Elston!

And I admit that I am one of the people that didn’t really know who Jessica Jones was, so the brief explanation given here is very appreciated, and sounds like an interesting character, but more than that, sounds like the ideal kind of character to portray in a TV series rather than a movie.

Unlike seemingly everyone, I actually really liked the Ben Affleck Daredevil movie, but I can’t deny that this move seems like a far better idea. Having it be a series fits the relatively minor kind of superpowers the character has, but it’ll hopefully allow for much better character development.

It’s going to be a long wait, but I’m definitely interested to see where they go from here! ^^

  2. Thanks for the explanation Brett. I’d love to see more of these short articles in-between shows.

I’m super excited for the new shows. Hopefully this means that somewhere down the line Marvel will make a Dr. Strange something.

I’m a little worried about how everything will come together, but I also think it’s about time to start trusting marvel’s plans.

  3. hmm…
    straight to netflix, you say?
    defenders, you say?
i like where this is going.

    …indeed i do.

  4. Well, its better than shoehorning them on SHIELD like I thought they would, and Netflix’s original programming has been generally great besides Hemlock Grove. Guess I need to go read Alias then!

  5. So damn excited to see how these turn out. Being a huge Daredevil fan I’m really interested to see a new and (hopefully) great take on him, as well as having him be a part of the MCU.

  6. ooooh interesting news. I’m totally in for watching an Iron Fist show! I think a couple of episodes, with the right advertising of course, can easily add these fellas and gal into the movie marvel universe. Jessica Jones is definitely a new one for me as well but I like the idea already!

I think what gets me most excited is the idea of a possible Doctor Strange to show up. Thor has been handled super well so I can’t wait to see what could possibly be done with the Doc.
