Vidjagame Apocalypse 43 – Happy Thanksgivukkah!

VGA43

Has it really been 125 years already? Another Thanksgivukkah is nearly upon us, once again merging Thanksgiving with the first night of Hanukkah in an explosion of festive confusion! This week, we spend plenty of time talking about the Xbox One launch (as well as your favorite launch games of all time), but not before discussing our five favorite turkeys in gaming and performing the most amateurish Thanksgivukkah skit we could slap together at the last minute.

Question of the Week

Which game(s) do you plan to play over Thanksgiving weekend? (If you don’t live in the U.S., pick the nearest comparable holiday and let us know what you’ll play/did play to escape from your family.)

*NOTE* We’ve been getting some AMAZING donations lately but hardly anyone is attaching a name and the intended recipient of said donations. Please try to make note of which podcast the donation is going to so maybe we can get some new equipment and thank the right people for all their support. Seriously, the laptop we edit this show on is one choking breath away from combustion.

*SECOND NOTE* VGA is taking the holiday weekend off, meaning no show next week – but we’ll be back on Dec. 10! (Please don’t forget we exist.)

  1. last week I would have told you A Link Between Worlds should get me through the holiday season, but it’s just so fucking good, I think I’ll finish it by the end of the week.

  2. I’ll be writing a review for the Breakdown expansion for State of Decay, which is due out on 11/29/13 for the XBox 360 and PC. Since State of Decay is probably one of my favorite open world zombie games ever to have hit the virtual shelves (Project Zomboid is another excellent one), I’ll more than likely be playing that for the majority of the weekend.

  3. Where I am from (Australia) January 26th is officially “Australia Day” (Our “4th of July”) and since it falls in the summer months, the tradition is to get drunk, eat lamb and listen to The Triple J Hottest 100 (google it)

So a couple of “Australia Day’s” ago, the weather was terrible so, I locked myself in my room, played GTA IV for 4 hours just so I didn’t have to show my family how disappointed I was with the weather. It was actually a pretty enjoyable Australia Day.

  4. Having just forsaken last gen by selling my PS3 to Best Buy, I’ll be playing what I bought with the store credit I got, my nice, shiny Zelda 3DS XL. I’d been flying with my launch 3DS since, well, launch and wow is that XL screen bigger. So yeah, Link Between Two Worlds and almost certainly more Pokemans, tambiĆ©n.

  5. My next holiday is the mid year vacation on Jan 2nd (Community 5th season debut!), and it lasts for about 3 weeks, and I’m gonna fill it with GTA V goodness.

    1. After I’ve listened to the podcast, when you guys said your age was double mine, I’d like to comment that I’m actually 22, but I’ve never actually started being a actual “gamer” until the launch of PS3.

  6. I’m gonna be playing the excruciating waiting game, because Telltale suggested they would have news on Walking Dead season 2 over Thanksgiving. Just give me the release date, for the love of mercy!

Oh, and AC: Black Flag, because it’s great. Tell Anne to get them to put in more sea shanties though. More shanties, I say!

  7. QOTW: Being in Canada, we had Thanksgiving almost two months ago so I don’t really remember what I played. Instead, I’ll go with my upcoming Christmas Break (since I’m a senior in highschool I get 15 days off). I plan to play insane amounts of GTA and Battlefield (as usual) and hopefully I’ll acquire some games on good old Festivas day and then I’ll play those for the remainder of the break.

  8. I will be trying to run through Lego Marvel Super Heroes, Super Mario 3D World, and [probably] finally start Zelda: A Link Between Worlds. Also, might even consider starting GTAV? Got it the 1st week it was out and I still have it sealed for some unknown reason.

  9. I am going to continue playing Pokemon Y. I’ll also be playing either Ys: The Ark of Napishtim or Okage: Shadow King. Time to dust off my PS2 I guess.

  10. I’m going to try to finish Lego Lord of the Rings. I remember really enjoying it but just ran out of time for it. Since i have a younger sister who is in love with lord of the rings and parents who want to try playing games that aren’t candy crush, the family will be siting around the t.v playing a not to complicated game. But I’m sure they wont learn how to move more then one stick at a time

  11. Sooo if I manage to pick up the new Zelda 3DS XL bundle for $150 at Target then I’ll be playing my brains out with Zelda: A Link Between Worlds! I also finally 1sted all the events in GRID 2 so now I’m moving on to going back to finishing AC II haha.

Also I’m dying laughing at the end here.

  12. The Assassin’s Creed turkey actually has a few more things you can do with it. There are walkthroughs on how to do it everywhere.

  13. I work at a gamestop on the east coast, and we have tons of xbox ones. bloody things wouldn’t sell. want we send you one?

  14. Probably gonna keep trying to 100% AC 4, I’m soooo close! And probably EV train some competitive pokemons. Oh yea also there’s a steam sale going on during this whole break so whatever I end up buying will probably sit in my library untouched for weeks.

Also this skit was amazing! I’d love to see more, really had me laughing. For a second I thought you guys were actually trying to teach me some sorta lesson.

  15. I think Hanuksgiving sounds better. That’d probably put off the patriots, though, putting the Jewish part first.

GTA V made want to play Red Dead again, so I am. I just got out of Mexico, and it didn’t seem to take nearly as long this time. The game seems to be shooting by, the second time.

  16. I love it every time the old TDar trio gets together on an episode(Chris, Brett and Mikel), it always turns out balls-achingly funny. It’s totally worth putting up with the shameless Capcom plugs

  17. Great episode guys, I didn’t know whether not there would be one this week, with vacations and all.

About what Dave said on Killer Instinct, although I understand that fighters generally have bigger casts, I think there’s a definite advantage to a smaller cast. Kinda like Skullgirls, the smaller casts can have wildly different characters that all stand out with each other. So many characters either blur together or get lost in the crowd when part of a Marvel3 level cast.

QOTW: In celebration of the new persona news last weekend, I’ll be playing a shit ton of persona arena. As well as some other fighters, Wonderful 101, and Sonic Lost World.

  18. I’m from Ireland (where there is no Thanksgiving) and I’m living in Tokyo at the moment (where there is also no Thanksgiving) so I guess I will talk about what I’m going to do over my Christmas break which is play more Persona 4: Golden in preparation for Persona 5 next year

  19. Sonic and Sega-All Stars Racing Transformed since I got it for ten bucks on Amazon. I’m holding off on FF XIII until December 10th since that is the last day of the semester for me. I’m sure I’ll have plenty of fun though with this racing game since people have stated that it does rival Mario Kart in Plenty of ways.

  20. I’ll be trapped with my family having to under go not 1 but 4 Thanksgiving dinners. But I’m covered, I’ll have my Tiger Games handheld version of Rambo 3 that I’ll be playing under the table. If anyone asks what I’m doing down there I’ll just fake an orgasm. That outa shut em’ up.
