  1. just to point out henery you said “i dont wanna talk about lost/games on a comic book podcast”
BUT i adore it when you guys go off topic, my good sir

  2. It really is both depressingly and annoying how hyper sensitive everyone is nowadays, taking personal offense at everything and being completely unable to take a joke. It’s a shame too, because Chris DID use to take a ton more risks and attempt a lot more silly stuff and jokes in the past, but now he’s at a point in which he has to double check anything he wants to poke fun at out of fear of getting someone offended.

It’s fucking ridiculous, learn to be more tolerant, people.

    1. Here. Here.

Chris even went on and on a few episodes ago about how comedy is important to laugh at these things.

I understand the need to be sensitive towards certain things, but there is also a point where it isn’t wanted or appreciated. My wife is in a wheelchair and we always get people stopping us and telling us we are an inspiration. It’s insulting, even though they think they are doing something caring and sensitive.

She personally has had to fight for everything herself and doesn’t like handouts or help from anyone. Some people with disabilities do. She loves South Park and will always laugh at a good cripple joke. I know other people who get horribly offended, and I understand that too.

Everyone takes things differently, and I think it is a mistake to constantly fall over backwards trying to second guess ourselves if we are being insensitive or offensive or not, because someone WILL always get offended. If everyone just acted themselves, we can use common sense to weed out the jerks from the rest.

But pretending to give a shit just throws everyone off.

      1. No shit. The whole show I’m like…Wait really? People bitched? It’s Chris Antista lol. He was most likely fucking kidding. Glad I ain’t the only one that felt this way. I don’t always agree with Chris’ opinions but who does? But his jokes always make me laugh.

  3. Chris one thing to point out maybe the Mogwai tweet didn’t work because he would just make more Mogwais. He would have had to eat something first then do the ice bucket challenge. I mean come on MAN. Air body knows Mogwais gotta eat afta mid night to turn to Gremlins dawg. Anyway I thought it was comical.

  4. QOTW: Haven’t listened to this episode yet but I have been reading George Romero’s Empire of the dead on Marvel Unlimited. Im only two issues in but its actually really good so far. For sake of disclosure im a die hard Romero fan and will defend diary of the dead lol. P.S. I think Henry doesnt like Stallone cause he never reads my answers lol jk brotha jk.

    1. I resend my last statement since Henry did in fact read my answer in last weeks episode. I do think a mad max style movie could work for last christmas.

  5. Honestly, I am beyond caring for social justice nowadays when the people who devote their energy to fighting sexist, misanthropic or misogynistic nerds on Twitter could spend their liberal energy fighting fights that matter like Ferguson or how brutally racist, militaristic and trigger-happy and uneducated cops are nowadays.

But I feel for Henry and everybody on Twitter and I do follow and respect Anita Sarkeesian. While I sit in the grey area about this debate (I hate slut shaming and witchhunting but I don’t like women abusing their power as indie developers, I want more realistic and empowering portrayals of women but I don’t mind realistically sexy characters like you would see walking down the streets or in a night club as an example), I understand what the SJW movement like what Henry is in are trying to accomplish.

Here’s the thing is- you guys need a representative or someone to communicate with these losers on Twitter. Either that or take some classes in debating with people in a public forum (the old style, not fuckass NeoGaf) because insulting people who insult you or threatening them with violence or jail time doesn’t make you look any better- it makes you look egalitarian at least and dystopian at worst. Answering questions, being intelligent and explaining what it is your movement wants will get a bunch more done. Treat hostility with honey than with vinegar, but be firm and static about what it is you want changed.

Beyond that, though I’m liberally minded, I am anti-censorship and though I love a good looking and insanely sexy game character, some of my most recent game crushes were Laura Croft in the recent Tomb Raider reboot, Naoto Shirogane in Persona 4 and Tali in Mass Effect.

I should probably start writing more if I said all of this while waiting for my lunch -_-‘

    1. Ignore that egalitarian and dystopian comment above, it’s been a long day and I was more punchy and in the case of egalitarian, using a different definition (my brain) than what it really meant.

Love the show guys and keep up the good work!

  6. What do you guys mean when you say you’re on Zoe’s side? Do you mean you agree with what you did? Or just you find how she is being treated deplorable? Because personally, honestly I’m disgusted with what she did and at the same time I’m disgusted by how she is being treated.

  7. oh my god. Get over yourselves. Nobody cares about spider woman. It is a cover for a comic book. Quit preaching to the choir, everybody who listens to this show gets it. Oh no celeb pic scandal, boo fucking hoo. It doesn’t affect anyone listening. Seriously I’ve been listening since your second episode but he “social justice” crap or whatever you call it is getting ridiculous. It feels like that’s all the lasertime network goes on about anymore. Sometimes I think that if that you guys would stop wearing pants if someone on r/TwoXChromosomes/ said pants make them feel oppressed. Take a few deep breaths of fresh air between the queef huffing.

  8. Honestly, I’m kind of pissed at the internet at the moment. I’m angry at douchebags making death threats against women, and I’m angry at the people who are saying I’m one of them, just because I play videogames. Sadly, every once in a while, a blog post or article pops up, claiming that “gamer” or “geek” culture is toxic and horrible, just because a percentage of it is (quite admittedly) awful. This provokes a (more often than not) angry response from people who AREN’T making death threats all day, which gets shouted down, or provokes an angry response itself, and the entire conversation goes to shit. Can we ever just have a real discussion about gender politics, without anybody getting called a bitch or a rapist?

Regardless, a good episode, guys. Keep up the Real Talk, it’s why I love this show.

  9. I think Lasertime is a bit of a political bubble right now.
I’ll be a fairly conservative voice until a better one comes along.
Here’s my application for Lasertime’s conservative voice:
    Credentials:
Listener since the beginning (I thought this was going to be a Star Wars podcast.)
I’m a National Merit Semi Finalist.(U.S. state of Louisiana)
    I read National Review.
I read Salon occasionally as a counter point.
    I’m dating a liberal.
6 days of every week I maintain enough sobriety to type

    My campaign promises:
I will listen to episodes to end before commenting. (including the plugs)
I will keep this off twitter; knee-jerk reactions are too easy there it kills rationality.
I won’t weigh in on a certain social issue: feminism because right now its too raw a nerve.
I won’t be conservative to piss you off. I’ll try convince you by being rational and respectful.
I will present evidence for claims if you ask for it.
I if you ask why i’m not qualified to be the Lasertime conservative voice I will tell you.
If nobody wants my voice I’ll stop I don’t want to ruin Lasertime for anyone. Lasertime has an odd healing power. It has gotten me through some shit. I won’t tell you about that though.

oops is need it make this more different so I can post it here.

  11. It’s odd and interesting that most industry figures that I really respect can’t even stomach talking or describing how awful the last few weeks’ events have been. It’s exhausting having to see level-headed people become worn out by things escalated the way they have.

But then again, it’s proof that these those harassing and threatening people are confused children on a tantrum, not to subtract from how real the threats could be. They’re lashing out blindly. Their world-view is shattered. Their identities are undone, self-identifying with games, finding it a safe place, and then be told they are to blame is a bitter pill to swallow. I feel heartbreak and pity toward them because there isn’t much I can do to help them empathize with the hurt they can cause.

Henry brought up lack of empathy, and that’s really what it is. It’s so difficult to teach, almost impossible on an Internet message board. I haven’t seen a conversation thread yet where somebody has begun thinking one way, and then further down the page, has revealed a change of mind.

That is why we need these conversations, circular and frustrating as they are, not to bring people immediately over to an enlightened sense of understanding, but perhaps to assemble a headspace that in months and years from now, a person can have a private moment and realize his error, not to his detriment, and not to anyone else’s victory, a huge fear for people, to face loss in a public form, even if it’s just the Internet.

QOTW: Does the Mass Effect visual comic count?

Comics always intimidated me with their endless, established mythology, to see Mass Effect 1 recapped with FemShep’s narration at the start of Mass Effect 2 on PS3, made me start to understand how efficient it could be as a medium, and I’ve since started reading more of them (with additional thanks to the Hank’s Corner recommendations).

  12. QOTW:

I guess I’ll be ‘that guy’…but the Archie published Sonic the Hedgehog and Mega Man books are super good and totally worth getting into. Sonic was the first comic series I started following as a kid, and its had a crazy evolution since then. Its by far the most successful, and longest running licensed book ever. There was a fairly big dip in quality in the 100s due to a certain writer going insane, but the run was taken over by Ian Flynn and Tracey Yardley and is now the best its ever been.

Part of this is because its become a lot more like a self aware, Saturday morning show. There’s an issue where Robotnik manages to take over Sonic’s body using what looks like a 360 controller, but he just keeps slamming into walls accidentally. Finally he just complains about how bad the controls are and how not fun it is to play. As a long time fan of the games (at least the not-shitty ones), its a really funny scene.

If you’re going to start somewhere, 160 is a great place, but there’s a really substantial reboot following the Sonic/MegaMan crossover, and if you’re only coming from the gaming side, the crossover is a good melting pot for newcomers.
