Cheap Predictions: Pick WWE Night of Champions 2014 results and win!

Are you the WWE predictions champ? Prove it, and you can choose the closer for an upcoming Cheap Popcast segment. Read on for Dave’s Night of Champions picks and then make yours!

Hey all! While a bunch of us extolled the virtues of promotions like New Japan, Ring of Honor, Hoodslam, and WWE’s in-house NXT in our most recent bonus episode (and props toHoodslam for giving us a shoutout on their site), it’s time to return to the comfy confines of the world’s biggest wrestling organization with their upcoming PPV. But before that happens, we make predictions!

As we’ve been doing for awhile now, the reader who makes the most correct predictions gets to pick the song that plays at the conclusion of next month’s episode of Cheap Popcast! First, though, a recap of SummerSlam. I went a paltry four-for-nine, with my lack of faith in RVD and Paige being the biggest crimes (though not one of the near-20 entries picked RVD to win his last PPV for awhile). Two predictors before I announced the end of entries got seven out of nine, but ByGodKing had the closer main-event running time than Ampatent, so that commenter’s choice will close our next episode: Samoa Joe’s Ring of Honor theme. I’m still undecided whether to honor Reasonable Fanboy’s predictions which came in two minutes after my post, so his choice of Rey Mysterio’s original WWE theme might appear elsewhere.

Anywho, here’s how the prediction contest goes. I’m going to make my picks in this here article, and then open up the replies to you awesome listeners. You will then pick a winner (or if you’re feeling frisky, a rare draw/double DQ) for each match (don’t worry about getting the finish right, I’m just looking for winners), and then, just in case there’s a tie for correct predictions, pick a running time for the final match listed (the presumed main event) as a tiebreaker. Just check out my predictions as a guideline.

What does the winner get? Well, you can make your mark on the next PPV-themed Cheap Popcast episode by choosing a theme to close a segment. Pick the wrestler theme and include a YouTube URL to a wrestler’s theme alongside your predictions (including the running time of the final match listed) and I’ll give you a shout-out before throwing to our episode-ender. Let’s kick off the predictions!

INTERCONTINENTAL TITLE MATCH: DOLPH ZIGGLER (CHAMP) VS THE MIZ
Never in a million years did I think I’d be sad to see a Ziggler-Miz feud nearing its end, but it’s probably the most entertaining thing going in the WWE right now due in no small part to Damien Sandow’s role as Miz’s stunt double. That said, I hope Ziggler can do some interesting stuff with a title feud with someone new. Ziggler wins.

UNITED STATES TITLE MATCH: SHEAMUS (CHAMP) VS CESARO
I’m pretty excited to see these two beat the ever-loving crap out of each other with the added stakes of a PPV making things just that much more brutal. I feel like a broken record saying this, but I hope the WWE is ready to finally give Cesaro a good run, and the silver lining of Roman Reigns’ injury is that they might just give him a face turn and a few victories in the process. Cesaro wins.

DIVAS TITLE MATCH: PAIGE VS AJ VS NIKKI BELLA
Will the WWE finally put the Diva’s Championship on one of the ladies from their terrible reality show after all? I’ve liked what Paige and AJ have been doing and I hope they can keep that level of interest with some new faces like NXT’s Charlotte. I’m almost always wrong about Divas matches, but I’m going to say Paige wins.

CHRIS JERICHO VS RANDY ORTON
I feel like Y2J is about to make his annual “step away from WWE for a few months to tour/save up fan support for a Royal Rumble return” hiatus, and Orton could use a bit of a rub after losing every PPV match he’s had since WrestleMania. Then again, that’s kind of the same thought process I had with RVD/Cesaro last month and I was wrong there. I’m going to stick with my gut and say Orton wins.

TAG TITLE MATCH: THE USOS (CHAMPIONS) VS GOLDUST AND STARDUST
The Usos have had a nice run, but it’s time to inject a little bit of variety in the quickly stagnating tag team division. Step one is giving the belt to the weirdest pair in the company. In what’s sure to be the highlight of Mike Grimm’s WWE-viewing year, Goldust and Stardust win.

MARK HENRY VS RUSEV
As much as WWE continues to flame the US-versus-Russia angle, I’m not sure what Mark Henry has to gain from breaking Rusev’s undefeated-via-pinfall stream. I’m thinking Thanksgiving weekend would be the perfect time for Rusev to finally fall, so I say he continues his dominance just a little longer Rusev wins.

WWE WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH: BROCK LESNAR (CHAMP) VS JOHN CENA
Last month was as close to a main-event squash match as I’ve ever seen. Granted that’s just bigger odds for Cena to defy, but I don’t see the logic in making his return to glory so abrupt. Lesnar has two of the biggest victories of 2014, and it would be wasteful for his comeuppance to occur on a B-level event. Cena will put up much more of a fight, but I say Lesnar wins in 20 minutes.

Alright, there’s my picks. Sound off below with your match predictions, (the world title match’s running time) as well as a YouTube link to your wrestler theme pick. Good luck, everyone!
