Vidjagame Apocalypse 90 – Alternate Histories

VGA90

Everyone loves “what-if” scenarios, and games are a great way to explore them, particularly when it comes to alternate views of world history. What if, for example, two warring, medieval secret societies had survived to spread their influence across the world? What if World War II had been fought by anime teenagers? These and other questions are answered by the games in this week’s Top 5, followed by some talk about Grand Theft Auto V (again), Far Cry 4, Dragon Age: Inquisition, and WWE 2k15, and a look at the franchises you got sick of first.

Question of the Week

If you could change one moment in any game’s story, what would it be?

  1. This was a tough one for me to think about, but after much consideration, I would change the ending of Prince of Persia ’08 to give players a choice between the game’s original ending where you revive Elika, resulting in unleashing Aruhman, or you could see a choice in the distance of just leaving the area and giving Elika one last kiss goodbye. As you leave thinking that this is what you would want Elika to have you do, you hear Aruhman saying ‘NO!’ escalating in volume until you enter another sandstorm and hear his voice no more. Eventually you find your donkey Fara and the ‘Prince’ looks back at the direction he came only to see nothing but the sandstorm behind you, and then he rides off. I think of this game in particular because it saddens me that this story may never continue, but at least fans could have a chosen form of closure.

  2. The the endings to Mass Effect 3. All kidding aside the moment i would want to change is the fight with The Boss in Snake Eater. The outcome of the fight is amazing, thought it broke my heart to actually have to (Spoiler for a 10 year old game) shoot her with her own gun. It is simply a personal guilt of killing such an awesome character.

    1. Dude that final moment is why its such an awesome scene and it aligns you with Big Boss’ own guilt and motivations going forward.

BTW I always thought it would by funny if the real president renamed someone for killing an enemy of the state. Imagine the POTUS renames you “Big Bin Ladin”.

    2. I’m going to go there and say Mass Effect 3’s ending, a lot of probably are, oh well. So MY problem with the ending is that the reveal that the Reapers are space-SKYNET and I thought that was dumb as fuck especially when the series has much better themes running through out.

The Reaper’s purpose should have been a galactic reset to maintain a status quo that is constantly threatened by greater species’ disrupting the evolution of lesser species. This concept would be supported by the Salarian’s tampering with the Krogan, the Shadow Broker’s species being abducted as pets, the creation of the Geth and destruction of the Quarians, and that the Protheans basically enslaved the entire galaxy and used it as their own amusement partk. The Reaper’s shouldn’t just wipe everyone out because they get lazy with robots!

So then Shepard has to decide if the current space-faring species are worthy or capable of overseeing the galaxy or if every species, even ones not even intelligent yet, have the right to evolve biologically and socially on their own”. Basically everything white-y did to every race on earth, but with space-squids.

TL;DR: Mario bakes Peach a cake, because equallity.

  3. QOTW: I would change the first moment you appear in the real world in Assassin’s Creed, in that it was never there and thus none of forced gameplay and weaker characters outside of the historical setting that people are actually here for.

  4. at Chris: Bioshock still holds up. I finally finished it for the first time this year. feels like a few too many fetch quests, but isn’t that the point?

Infinite’s DLC is fantastic, ties into the first game in very clever ways. play it. still worth your time and money.

  5. My sister is Gay and after hearing about Gone Home I told her to play it and watched, we both agreed that the ending is AWFUL! She says that she very much has had similar experiences many times and IRL those relationship end in secret heartbreak and forced hetero-relationships, she was very bothered by how neat and “happy” it was. I was also bothered by the neatness but more so in the fact that the mother doesn’t cheat on her husband, I’d change the game to make it much darker; the mom cheats on the dad. The sister is alone and heartbroken and shamefully turns to men to keep up appearance for a few more years and the PC shamefully leaves home and pretends she was never there she then never talks to her family again. Talk about wanting games to be more “realistic”.

  6. QOTW: it would be Mass effect 3’s ending, have Harbinger as the final reaper guarding the way to the citadel, have every one of your squadmates (who survives) do Suicide mission 2.0, then when you enter the light and save the world (no Starchild BS) it goes straight into the Citadel DLC, which was a great way to end the series. on fond memories

This was a really great episode, great job guys, funny too

  8. QOTW: Modern Warfare 2, No Russian level. You are the last gunman to walk out of that elevator, meaning there is a sweet spot where you can kill the terrorists while they are funneled into the door. I know it’s taking advantage of a flaw rather than a genuinely interesting answer (I’m sure if the developers could go back they’d put you in the front), but it’s too tempting.

  9. If I could change an ending it would be to have the Mages and Templars stop their insanity after Anders blew up the Chantry (can’t say spoilers since it is a central theme of DA: I in the beginning with three people from it being allies… And you have to set it as a card on the Dragon Keep site to import your saves into DA: I).

Rather than escalation, it EASILY could have been solved with intelligence… to explain why would take several paragraphs but sadly this is something I KNOW couldn’t be solved any other way because the Mages and Templars were all corrupt by that point, again to explain why would take a bit. I think that’s the destinction with this question- I know it had to happen and I wish I could change it, but I couldn’t.
