Vidjagame Apocalypse 112 – Sega Saturn Turns 20

Sega’s Saturn might have been an underpowered, overpriced mess of a system when it prematurely launched 20 years ago this week — but dammit, it still holds a special place in our hearts, partly because it boasted some truly amazing games. In this episode, we count down our five favorites, after which we dive into an anemic slate of new releases (including Attack on Titan: Humanity in Chains), get excited over Fallout/Bloodstained/Assassin’s Creed Syndicate news, and the alt-history games that captured your imaginations.

Question of the Week

What’s a game character you used to think was cool, but have since outgrown?

*NOTE* We’ve been getting some AMAZING donations lately but hardly anyone is attaching a name and the intended recipient of said donations. Please try to make note of which podcast the donation is going to so maybe we can get some new equipment and thank the right people for all their support.

  1. QotW: Every Goddamned Pokemon… the premise is still kinda fun, but over the years ive just gotten so tired of the pun names. The OG pokemon are at least somewhat unique, but from what ive seen of everything 152+ it seems like some japanese guy is just walking through his neighborhood and turning everything he sees into a new pocket monster. Is there a mailbox pokemon yet?

  2. it’s not a good podcast until you hear four 30 year old men argue about Nights! XD I love it.
really good episode. I’m surprised at the tut tutting at Mikel over donating to the Igarashi kickstarter. I’m all for this level of creative output for the Japanese side of the gaming industry. They’re disappearing so fast I was afraid of what would happen to those guys and the future of their brand of gaming. A pillar of this industry.

  3. I love you guys! Especially Chris. I would like to make one correction. When AC Unity launched it was broken to the the point of unplayable on PC and was only marginally better on consoles. The frame rate on all versions would often dip to sub 10fps, the game would lock up regularly and saves for many players were corrupted. The Master Chief Collection was busted at launch but playable. The difference is that Ubisoft got their shit together and fixed their game way ahead of time. Anyways, I appreciate what you guys do and plan to make another donation when I get my next pay check. Keep up the good work!

  4. Yay for more VGA! Although I’ve never personally played a Saturn (we were a Nintendo household, and my cousin who was into games only had a Genesis until the Dreamcast came out), I always love hearing you guys do celebrations like these.

  5. QOTW: Duke Nukem became something of a Chuck Norris of internet meme fame before the internet where he would be the answer to every situation. Now I see him as washed up, dated and not as funny as I recall… like Chuck Norris.

  6. QotW:

BJ Blaszkowitz. When you are 8, you don’t know his name is both ridiculous and slang for a sex act. When you are 34 and playing inthe same room as your wife and she laughs every time his name is spoken, you must acknowledge this fact.

Also I thought Clayfighter was really cool and funny when it came out. Watching Chris and Dave stream it m makes me realize it is just stupid and kind of racist.

  7. I gotta disagree when you say there’s nothing this year, we’ve had Dying Light, Bloodborne and MKX. Wealso have The Witcher, Arkham Knight, Metal Gear, Mario Maker, and Halo 5.

  8. It’s sad that Sega was so bold during the late 90s with software, but just couldn’t get hardware right.

Unfortunately, the unique software they made during the Dreamcast era did not carry over to the next generation. At that point games started to get ‘serious’

  9. I never owned a Saturn, but it seems like the system with the most heartbreak attached to it. Sega was a great company, and this was the real start of their fall from grace. Of course, my only real touchstone for the system is Nights, and that’s only because of the infamous “kid-fuckers hoagie” episode of TDar. Great episode, guys.

  10. “Nights is beautiful, there is a lot of wonderful design elements in it. To me it is like a beautiful man… or woman, grabbing the head of my erect dick and rubbing their thumb around the head.”
