The Best New Amazon Releases: Xbox One’s Spirit Reborn

There’s a new Xbone on the block, a Miyazaki classic goes Blu, and books enter another Grey area…

It’s the week of E3, but that doesn’t mean nothing is coming out. Not only are there new games, but also some real high brow films hitting the market this week, including two of my favorite Japanese films of all time. Though if you want to keep up with pre-ordering the stuff announced at E3, be sure to keep checking the Ultimate E3 game pre-order guide! If you see anything you want, even if we don’t list it here, be sure to buy them on Amazon through the links on this page. It costs no extra to you, and sends a little money to the LT crew to help us keep our bills paid. You could also buy some premium commentaries on the Laser Time Bandcamp!

Xbox One Halo: The Master Chief Collection 1 TB Bundle
Announced ahead of E3, Microsoft has a new version of the Xbox One ready for those that still haven’t jumped into the Xbone zone. This model doubles the internal storage to a whole terabyte (I remember when a gigabyte sounded impossibly huge), and the Halo: Master Chief Collection is packed in. I hear that game might finally resemble something close to functional online. Lastly, Microsoft has a the brand new controller redesigned for the upgraded machine, all for $399. It does make you wonder if the 500GB Xbox One will soon see a price cut to $299.

Payday 2: Crimewave Edition
Starbreeze’s bank robbery FPS has been a surprise hit over the years, with folks across the world doing their best Heath Ledger impressions as murderous clown thieves. The hit sequel is now getting a port to PS4 and Xbox One with all the previously released DLC included, along with promises of some tech upgrades on the fancier system. Pre-ordering also unlocks a ton of extras, so you might want to get in on this one before it comes out on Tuesday (unless, of course, you’re reading this after 6/16).

Pro Cycling Manager 2015
I’m not going to pretend I know even the first thing about professional cycling, or the management of cycling pros. Hell, I barely feel comfortable riding a bike. But this article needed a third game for the list, and this indomitable PC series keeps chugging along, even when it’s thighs are really starting to chafe. If this is your type of thing, you already know you want it, so why not get it via your bros at Laser Time, huh?
Spirited Away (2-Disc Blu-ray + DVD Combo Pack)
I’ve been waiting for this to release for a loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong time. As you’ve no doubt seen in articles and Laser Time’s video tour of the Ghibli museum, we’re pretty big fans of Miyazaki here. And, after Disney took its sweet time, the last of Hayao Miyazaki-directed Ghibli films, Spirited Away (aka Sen to Chihiro) is getting an HD release in the US. This is a great time to rewatch the film that won Miyazaki an Academy Award, as you travel to a strange world of spirits, onsens, and trains. Ghibli completionists should also check out the Blu-ray for The Cat Returns.

The Wrecking Crew
This film is both one man’s tribute to his father and a look into what it was like to record music in the early days of pop. When recording was expensive and there was no time for mistakes, bands like The Beach Boys, Elvis, and The Monkees let some of the best musicians in America record the iconic rock songs we know today. Known as The Wrecking Crew, these were the extremely talented session musicians who recorded the radio hits of the ’60s and ’70s, and they did so in anonymity. Now the filmmaker son of one of The Wrecking Crew put together a documentary to showcase the groups place in music history. A must watch for any fans of oldies stations (myself included).

The Happiness Of The Katakuris
Seeing this Blu-ray on the new releases list made me surprised and squeal with joy. Takashi Miike is famous more extreme horror and violence in films like Dead or Alive and Audition, but Happiness of the Katakuris shows he has talent for comedy, animation, and even musicals. This absurd comedy hasn’t seen many official releases in the US, so it’s way past time for Americans to get an official taste of this again. If you’re even thinking about seeing it, I’d snap this up now before Katakuris goes out of print once more.

My Dinner with André (Criterion Collection)
Did that Season 2 episode of Community that recreated My Dinner with André instead of Pulp Fiction really confuse you? Then you need to watch this extremely subtle classic on Blu-ray. Starring a familiar face to Princess Bride fans, this understated film is getting the royal treatment thanks to the Criterion Collection, so you can safely assume this is the best version of the movie that’s ever been released. Get some culture and help out Laser Time simultaneously!

Grey: Fifty Shades of Grey as Told by Christian
You didn’t think the series was over just because all the books were published and the story ended, did you? Nope, in classic sequel style, the kinky tale that captured America’s libido is being retold, only this time from the viewpoint of Mr. Grey himself. What was he thinking when expressing his very singular tastes? This book should finally give you some answers. Don’t worry, we won’t tell anyone if you buy it.
