Batman returns, Miyazaki’s directorial debut, Final Fantasy expands, and more…
E3 may be in the record books, but this is a VERY exciting week for your friends at Laser Time. In case you missed the news, the Laser Time Patreon has launched! We’ve been working on this for so long, and we’re so happy to be sharing this with all of you today! The biggest thank yous in the world to everyone who has pledged so far, because the turnout already has been incredible! And be sure to tell a friend (or 10) about it, because we want the world to know that Laser Time has arrived! Still, even with all that news, that doesn’t mean our weekly Amazon article is stopping any time soon! There are some big releases this week, and buying them helps LT at no extra cost to you! Thanks again!!!!
Batman: Arkham Knight
Unlike many of the dull days of summer, this week’s top release is number 1 with a parent-killing bullet. The close to Rocksteady’s Arkham trilogy of games has arrived, and I daresay that the Dark Knight has rarely looked this hardcore before. He’s certainly doing enough damage to warrant his first M-rated game. Come for the Batmobile and the mystery, stay for the ass-kicking combos and deep references to comics history. And if you want to go all out, you know you can pick-up the fancy the PS4 bundle Sony is offering, should this be your first new-gen experience. And if you’re getting the game on PS4, you can also use Amazon to get the season pass right now.
Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward
There was a time when Final Fantasy XIV looked like such a colossal failure that it might have killed the series name. That history makes it all the more admirable that the developers were able to not only fix the problems, but turn it into one of the most beloved FF games in recent memory. This expansion keeps the MMO love going, and unfurls new missions, items, and places to fans on the PC, but on the PS4 and PS3 as well. This isn’t just a great time for fans to resubscribe, it’s also a chance for even more discover what people love about it so much.
Aside from Naruto, Tekken, and Dark Souls, I’m not all that used to seeing notable Bandai Namco games coming to new-gen, but the team is putting their racing expertise to work in this new motorcycle series. Simply known as Ride, they promise intense races and high customization, but maybe read a couple reviews before biting the bullet. Man, I wish Grimm was writing this entry. He’s know just what to say.
Lupin the 3rd: The Castle of Cagliostro
Did you think Hayao Miyazaki’s career began with Mononoke? Or even the first Ghibli film? No, this incredible Lupin the 3rd film is his directorial debut for film, though he was almost a 20 year veteran of animation at this point. Though it may lack some of the heart Miyazaki is known for, Castle of Cagliostro is one of most dynamic, exciting pieces of animation the world has ever seen. It’s a non-stop thrill ride (seriously!), and is full of moments other filmmakers ripped off with abandon in the decades since. If this is a Miyazaki piece you’ve never seen fix that IMMEDIATELY by picking up this Blu-ray, the first HD edition of the film ever seen in the US.
The Fisher King (The Criterion Collection)
Even before his tragic passing, this was one of my favorite Robin Williams performances. His manic energy is there, but it’s used on a very damaged character that the world has abandoned, and from who Jeff Bridges seeks out for forgiveness. This has all the tropes that make a Terry Gilliam film the great experiments we love them to be, and this may be his most sentimental, as it forces empathy onto the cold greed of the 1980s. If you’ve never seen it before, it’s a real honor to see it get the royal treatment by The Criterion Collection, because the Fisher King deserves no less.
Mission: Impossible Collection
The Mission Impossibe series feels like a franchise from another era. There’s no real continuity between them, they are total star vehicles, they change a lot with every entry, and it has been going on for almost 20 years. And yet, thanks to Brad Bird’s incredible fourth Missions Impossible film and Tom Cruise’s willingness to do crazy stunts, the series is more vibrant than ever heading into an upcoming fifth entry. Now you can get all four of Ethan Hunt’s secret agent missions on HD in one compact set.
Dog Soldiers (Collector’s Edition)
This is a pretty random entry, but that’s fitting because I saw this film fairly randomly too. This British horror film may be low lost, yet director Neil (The Descent) Marshall squeezes all the gruesome fun he can out of the concept of werewolves battling British army men across the Scottish Highlands. I mean, seriously, doesn’t that sound awesome?! A bit like Aliens meets Gargoyles, this battle of mysticism and military is a lot of dumb fun.
Annihilation Conquest Omnibus
I don’t normally put comics in this article, but this massive package needed to be shared. Did you enjoy seeing Ultron on the big screen this summer? How about 2014 Guardians of the Galaxy? What if you threw that together with the Borg and lesbian space princesses? That’s a good idea of what you get with the event Annihilation Conquest, a Marvel cosmic crossover that brought all those folks into one place to battle it out on a galactic level! Read all now in one comprehensive volume!
