Vidjagame Apocalypse 119 – The Best Games of 2015 (So Far)

It’s the midpoint of the year, which means it’s time to pick our favorite games of the past six months. Which ones made the cut? Listen as we validate (or invalidate) your opinions, completely forget Troy Baker’s name, and then spend most of the second segment talking about favorites that didn’t make it in, because it’s a slow week. Then we talk about games you wish hadn’t been canceled. Fun!

Question of the Week

What’s your favorite game of the year so far?

  1. Gotta go with Arkham Knight. I do admit that the heavy Batmobile reliance is kind of grating at times, but I’m absolutely loving the story. There have been more ‘oh, shit!’ moments then I ever thought possible by game 4, plus having Kevin Conroy back makes all the difference in the world.

  2. QOTW: For me, it is currently a tie between Life is Strange and Batman: Arkham Knight. I love having great stories being told to me in whatever form, and both of these games have just that as well as great gameplay mechanics and great surprises within their plots. With Batman, the Arkham Knight’s identity was something that I could guess, but for me it told that character’s story in a way that made sense to me why he would do what he would do, but the story also had some other great surprises of its own that I just didn’t see coming. Life is Strange has also been surprising and a great emotional ride for me. I hope Episode 4 comes out real soon.

  3. QOTW: Bloodborne is easily my game of the year, as well as the best game so far on PS4 (The Last of Us was a PS3 game first) and the first game I got a Platinum for by just putting 100 hours into it. And reading some of the comments, where people talk about story and shit, this game also had the best story I’ve played in awhile and to say why is 100% a spoiler I don’t wish to repeat- I’ll just say that this game definitely appears like something it isn’t at first, and the hint that “It’ll all feel like a bad dream” from the guy in the opening is apt.

  4. Witcher 3 for sure, in the 3 weeks since it came out I put 200 hours into the game. I beat the game, then immediately did another playthrough giving attention to every single side quest and little map object I could. I’m currently waiting until all the dlc and the 2 big 10 and 20 hour expansions are out to do one last, all out playthrough. I feel the game is a true benchmark, it’s easily one of my top 3, if not my top game of all time.

Also – Yen is best girl. Triss is for kids.

  5. None of my favorite games of 2015 were originally released in 2015, but they were for the Xbox One. My trio of favorite games are Shovel Knight, SteamWorld Dig and Tales from the Borderlands.
Being only 18 years old, Shovel Knight gives me the experience of a beautiful, bright platformer that I could only have experienced if I were born in the early 80s.

SteamWorld Dig is a delightful mining expedition set in a world where humans have turned into subtaranian savages. It is your job to excavate resources to breed life into your town and discover what treasures your uncle hid for you in this subtaranian world. Also you play as a robot.

Tales from the Borderlands is funny, interesting, gripping and gives a true feeling of story I always wanted from Borderlands 2 and the Pre-Sequel. And it’s awesome.

  6. QOTW: Mine is the obvious answer of The Witcher 3, but I’ll go a little bit further and say I like it more than any game from 2014, 2013, or 2012 as well (2011 did have Skyrim and Portal 2, so that’s as far back as I’ll go)

  7. QotW: While Technically id say bloodborne, Ive spent more time playing Destiny than anything else this year with the DLC and multiplayer stuff, so I’m going to unofficially go with that.

  8. QOTW: Tied between Batman: Arkham Knight and Ori and the Blind Forest, with the runner-up being Mortal Kombat X.

  9. QotW: HI GUYS it’s probably super obvi but Bloodborne is probably my GOTY with MH4U right behind it. I touched on why I like the Souls/MH stuff in that LT article I wrote about ‘fave 2014 things’ so I won’t repeat it all but yeah… and instead of playing Batman I started FFXIV so I’m definitely in a J-games loop at the moment.

  10. QOTW: Probably Hotline Miami 2: The Wrong Number. Though the game occasionally becomes a bit too self-indulgent with it’s pseudo-intellectual, shock-value filled story, it did something I don’t think I’ve ever seen a game do before. It picked up the difficulty curve directly from where the first game left off and continued from there. There’s no reset, no holding your hand. You either fucking GO or get smoked within seconds of gaining control for the first time. The game is so filled with different combat scenarios that make you stretch every bit of talent you might have to play the game to it’s utmost extreme to the point where I have no idea how they could ever make another one of these, because they used up all their ideas.

PS. Honorary mention to Cobra Club for having the best ending zinger of any game this year, successfully and, most of all, simplistically delivering a poignant message about the state of online privacy in the modern world (in connection to dick pics, of course, nothing else).
