Difficult People Looks Like A Comedy Nerd’s Dream

Get ready to love Billy Eichner and Julie Klausner as much as I do…

Henry Gilbert here, the host of Cape Crisis, member of the Laser Time Patreon, and I likely wouldn’t be the professional podcaster I am today if I wasn’t a huge comedy nerd. Loving Mr. Show pulled me into Comedy Bang! Bang!, which lead me to a million other shows, including Julie Klausner’s How Was Your Week, which also introduced me to the intense cattiness of Billy Eichner and Billy on the Street. And next week the two will premiere a comedy series on Hulu that I’ve been waiting over a year to see. Take a look at the first trailer below and see if it doesn’t fill you with similar excitement.

The show seems fairly autobiographical for the pair of real life best friends struggling to make it in entertainment. So many great one-liners come from Klausner and Eichner’s reactions to everyday people, though as an overly nostalgic blogger, I shed a little tear over the “Remember Full House?” bit. On top of that, the trailer is full of some of my favorite people, including Amy Sedaris, Kate McKinnon, Andrea Martin, James Urbaniak, Martin Short, Debbie Harry, and Gabourey Sidibe.

I’ve been a Hulu subscriber for awhile, mainly for the easy access to regular TV shows and not their exclusives. This is the streaming service’s first original series that has really pulled me in. It looks like the new, mean-spirited sitcom that my cynical heart was waiting for. Unlike Netflix’s binge style, a new episode will post on Hulu each week, so give the first one a look when it goes live August 5.

  1. Bill Eichner + Kate McKinnon is Gold baby GOLD! This also this cast looks like it could be super gay and indie even for the Hulu audience much like how The Grace Helbig couldn’t even work on E! of all networks due to it’s alienating humor. I do like what Hulu, Netflix and Amazon are doing I recently read Tig Notaro is getting an Amazon show, I hope one of those networks can revive Garfunkel and Oat and The Birthday Boys.
Now is a good time to bring up the Billy on the Street bit where he ask “Would you have sex with Paul Rudd” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1XP5zczzJwY

  2. I went to class at Baruch College just a few blocks away from the Flatiron Building where they’ve filmed tons of Billy on the Street bits. Got to see Billy Eichner twice, once while he was surrounded by Funny or Die crew members getting ready for a shoot and once when he actually walked into Baruch for some reason! He was much taller than I expected.

On a side note I also got to see and speak with Marc Maron as he was sitting by the chairs near the Flatiron Building. He was super cool and liked that I mentioned his CM Punk podcast as one of my favorites, as he’s looking into doing more of them with people in and around wrestling.

  3. My friend Shannon is on this! She taped this and an episode of The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore while I was doing a shortrun improv show at a local theater with her. I think I bragged about it more than she did.
