Jon Stewart’s First Post-Daily Show Job? Hosting WWE’s SummerSlam

After retiring from political commentary and satire, Jon Stewart is finally making his pro wrestling dreams come true…

I’m Henry Gilbert, host of the comic book podcast Cape Crisis (via the support on the Laser Time Patreon), and a lover of both smug liberals and professional wrestling. I’m finally recovering from Jon Stewart saying goodbye to The Daily Show just a few days ago, often filling that void with hours of WWE and other sports entertainment. Shockingly enough, I didn’t have to wait long to see what Stewart is up to next/ WWE just made the shocking announcement that New York resident/jokester will be in Brooklyn hosting WWE’s biggest non-WrestleMania event of the year, SummerSlam.

Now, this isn’t a HUGE shock for people following Stewart in the last year, as the man has proven to be a mark of the highest caliber. He name dropped wrestlers so often than he not only got a farewell tribute from WWE champ Seth Rollins…

But he also made an appearance on Monday Night Raw, which has to be one of the best celebrity appearances in WWE history…

As it’s now plain to see, Jon Stewart’s real reason for quitting The Daily Show is to become a full time manager – sorry – advocate, and him hosting SummerSlam is merely the first step. Also, given his long-running feud with Seth Rollins, with Jon get involved in Seth’s title defense against John Cena? Or could it have been a swerve all along, and Stewart assists Rollins in beating Cena?

Alls I know is that Stewart can’t be any worse than last year’s SummerSlam host, who was this old racist who may have once been the leader of some sort of -mania. I thiiiiiink his name started with an H, but since WWE has scrubbed him from existence, I can’t be sure.

  1. I still can’t believe Hogan is getting scrubbed out of the business for that. For your average guy like me who grew up in the 80’s, Hogan defined wrestling. I’ve since come to understand he is kind of a jerk who let other people do the heavy lifting but it’s still insane that a guy who made a few racial comments in the privacy of a home, gets the same treatment as someone who murders their family.

    Alright WWE. That sounds fair.

I’m no fan of Hogan anymore but this knee jerk reaction is ridiculous.

    1. I’m definitely no fan of mob violence nor censoring/erasing history, and murder will always be ahead of racism in the scale of awfulness (of which we are all fond)

But, in all fairness, the ‘few racial comments in the privacy of a home’ basically amounted to “I really don’t want my daughter to date ‘dem niggers,” which is completely and totally indefensible.

      1. Well, I would argue that racist comments captured from a moment that should have remained private are far less damning than some of the other shit that still employed WWE wrestlers have been a part of.

Look at Austin. I’d be willing to bet good money that he has had far more racist shit come from his mouth than Hogan ever did. Besides that, didn’t he get arrested at least twice for spousal abuse? I know once was for assaulting Debra and I believe the other was another girlfriend.

All I’m saying is that it’s a pretty fucked up world where Hogan gets the same treatment as someone who killed his family, yet Austin can continue to cash cheques after physically assaulting women. How is private racist comments worse than the physical assault of a woman by a trained wrestler?

        1. 1) I had no idea about Austin’s spousal abuse charges, holy shit

          2) Im not saying that Hogan needs to be scrubbed from history like Benoit (i would never argue for the censoring or erasing of history), but something does need to happen, and the WWE officially “firing” Hogan and distancing themselves from him isn’t a bad start

  2. I hope Stewart exchanges a few blows in the ring and then Mr. Met runs out to be his tag team partner

      1. and then the Philly Phanatic and Paws have to come in to challenge a rematch because they are all canonically on/off again friends
