Animals cross, LEGO ain’t cheap, songs are sung, and someone is the last man on Earth…
I thought summer was supposed to be over, but it’s still stupidly hot where I live, at least by Bay Area standards. But even if the temperatures don’t feel like fall, our lists of new releases on Amazon sure look that way. So many big games are coming out on just about every system, while Blu-rays and DVDs of last year’s best TV have arrived just as the new season of TV begins. And do I even have to remind you that buying anything on this page through the links on this page help support Laser Time at no extra cost to you? It’s a great way to help the site on top of the Laser Time Patreon. Now, pitches, it’s time to look through another week of stuff and see if our wallets can survive it…
Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer
Compared to falls with Link Between Worlds and Smash Bros., late 2015 on 3DS is a little slim. In fact, when one of the top games of the fall is a home decorating spin-off of Animal Crossing, it can look a tad weak in the outside, but the AC crew hasn’t failed me yet. True, in the games I often just use my home as a dumping ground for all my junk (just like IRL), but maybe Happy Home Designer will make me better at interior design. At the very least it opens the door to long-awaited Animal Crossing amiibo and amiibo trading cards, which old 3DS owners will need the game bundled with an NFC Reader to use. Or just go all out and finally upgrade to the North American premiere of the normal sized New 3DS, with included Animal Crossing faceplates.
LEGO Dimensions Starter Pack
Jumping Jiminy! We just had Skylanders and Disney Infinity, and now here’s another massive cacophony of plastic and gameplay, this time under the LEGO banner. The builder brand has been attached to some of the better all-ages games of the last decade, and this time they’re throwing in the toys themselves to make stages come alive, featuring a huge amount of different properties – for a price. On top of the not-cheap starter pack, there’s a Scooby Doo Team Pack, a Wizard of Oz Wicked Witch Fun Pack, a Portal Fun Pack, a Simpsons Fun Pack, and many, many, many more. They all look pretty cool, just don’t go broke getting every level pack, ok?
Soccer just keeps on happening, huh? No matter how matter how much I refuse to pay attention to it, it looks like footie just won’t stop, and neither will the game based on it. Well, even as FIFA execs get exposed for the crooks they are, at least the USA has some more exposure, as the women’s champions are part of the game for the first time ever. Plus, if you’ve been waiting for FIFA 16 to get Microsoft’s new-gen hardware, then get the
Last Man On Earth: Season 1
This was one of my favorite network comedies of the last year, even if I get that Last Man rubbed some people the wrong way. The show’s rather extreme starting point of a man left alone after a plague kills everyone is definitely a weird one, and Will Forte’s Phil Miller might be one of the most pitiful and unlikable leads a TV show ever had. But that’s what I love about Forte, as he is a master of playing desperate, sad men, and co-creators Phil Lord and Chris Miller (LEGO Movie, Clone High) are totally on the same wavelength. Across 13 episodes of surprising twists and turns, Forte and costar Kristen Schall (and some secret others) show that maybe finding others at the end of the world isn’t as simple as it seems.
The Flash: Season 1 (Blu-ray)
The other big network hit of last season that I came to love is also getting the physical media treatment. Though I overlooked it at first, once I listened to the army of people telling me to watch The Flash, I quickly became a fan. This is a full-on, super powered show, with secret identities and time travel, and it really gets why I’ve had a soft spot for the Scarlet Speedster all these years. There’s an engrossing, season long mystery to pull you in, and when it’s time to include some of Flash’s wilder history, like say a mind controlling ape, the show goes all in. I can’t wait for season 2 to get started, and this Blu-ray is a great way to catch up before it begins.
Pitch Perfect 2
What was once just a bunch of ladies earnestly singing has now become a huge hit with kids and adults alike, so of course they’re back to spread acapella cheer once more. The unaccompanied singers have some new blood just as the old troop starts to leave college, and Elizabeth Banks’ direction leads them through another fun adventure. I love pretty much the entire soundtrack, though I will say it peaks midway through with an incredible underground singing competition hosted by David Cross. But it’s still a great ride throughout, even when they reprise the cup song, which the world has heard 1000 times too many.
Rocky Horror Picture Show: 40th Anniversary Collection
On the topic of songs I can’t get out of my head, I spent my teen years with the Rocky Horror soundtrack in my car CD player. I could probably do every song word-for-word right now, but I’ll spare you that and just say that this ultra campy classic is getting another HD rechristening. This time around there are even more extras and physical goodies included to please any fan who has dressed up as Frank or Magenta at one time or another. It’ll be Halloween soon enough, so you better get this ASAP.
SPECIAL SALES NEWS! PRE-ORDER AMAZING MIYAZAKI BOX SET
The Collected Works of Hayao Miyazaki
Hayao Miyazaki is the most celebrated animator of the last 50 years, and for good reason. Films like My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki’s Delivery Service, and Princess Mononoke are some of the most fully realized worlds ever shown in theaters, capturing the hearts of people from just about every age and part of the planet. Now that he’s retired, Amazon has an exquisite looking special collection of every feature length film Miyazaki directed all in one box set. Plus, there are some fantastic bonuses as well that will likely justify the price. Out this November, this looks like a great gift for those you love most.
