Watch Chrono Trigger’s Composer Play The Soundtrack Live

ChronoMusic

The best game ever (and its cromulent sequel) get a celebratory album thanks to the games’ composer…

2015 doesn’t just mark the 20th anniversary of Chrono Trigger, which was one of the best games ever to grace a console. Chrono Trigger has timeless 16-bit graphics and unforgettable characters, but all that wouldn’t be half as memorable without the sterling soundtrack backing it up. The compositions were from Squaresoft’s sound engineer turned songwriter Yasunori Mitsuda, and Chrono Trigger was the first game to feature Mitsuda’s music. It was the start of a quite prolific career, and to celebrate his two decades of work, Mitsuda has gone back to the start with a new album of arranged music for Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross. It just came out in Japan, and Mitsuda celebrated with some live performances of Chrono Trigger’s best songs. (Yasunori Mitsuda is the one with the acoustic guitar)…

Augh, that rendition of Schala’s Theme is almost too much for my tear ducts to take on a Monday morning. So very pretty, but I don’t know how much more I could take. Certainly not the 600AD composition Yearnings of the Wind (aka Wind Scene). Oh no…

God DAMN it, now my whole day will be ruined if I don’t play that on a loop for the rest of the day. If you don’t plan on importing the album, check out the North American pre-order on Square’s website. After a taste of these performances, I find it hard to resist listening to the entire anniversary disc. Until then, give a listen to Chrono Trigger’s lovely epilogue track – and if you’ve never played Chrono Trigger, check the links below to finally correct that mistake! Also, if you love game music, you should really check out Laser Time’s sister show VGMpire.
