The Best New Amazon Releases: Tom Clancy’s Just Cuz Chronicles

Amazon1130

Thanksgiving is over and now it’s time for 2015’s last gasp of big name games, along with an outbreak of zombified Blu-rays…

Have you eaten all your leftovers yet? Had pie for breakfast and turkey sandwiches for lunch? Spent tons of money of Black Friday and Cyber Monday? Then you are ready for December to begin just as much as I am. The first week of December is also when many publishers release their last big games of the year, and this is no exception. We’ve got a shooter reboot, explosive open world action, and perhaps the Wii U’s best JRPG, all in one week. If you like any of those, or the Blu-rays of the week, remember that buying them through our links helps support Laser Time, just like the Laser Time Patreon. And the same goes for buying anything else through those links. Now let’s get down to business…

Just Cause 3
The devs for Just Cause have already launched a Mad Max game this year, but they still found time to complete a third adventure in the over-the-top open world series as well. Early buzz for this one has been great, as the grappling hook madness of previous game is topped in this new-gen entry. And if you’re really up for this game, you can also pick up the Expansion DLC pass on ‘Zon.

Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege
Hey, Tom Clancy fans, have you been waiting for a return of more realistic counterterrorism? How about multi-level shootouts in a very destructible suburban home? In light of the last couple weeks news, this action might be a little too real, but from the bits I played, Siege does look like a return to the no-nonsense action that made Rainbow Six famous. If that’s what you’re into, then you’ve likely already ordered it, though perhaps you’ll want to upgrade to the Gold edition with the season pass included. Honestly though, I’m waiting to see the reviews, because I wonder if there’s enough content to justify the $60 price tag.

Xenoblade Chronicles X
I may be the biggest Nintendo fan in the Laser Time team, but even I’ll admit the Wii U’s holiday offerings have been a little lackluster. This week’s launch of Xenoblade Chronicles X is the console’s last gasp at Xmas greatness, and the early word from importers is that the game might just deliver on its promise. It’s a massive game with bigger landmasses than Fallout 4 features, as well as giant mechs and online multiplayer battles that seem right up the alley of Monster Hunter fans. With big, console JRPGs becoming a dying breed, I’ve been hoping Xenoblade can be the return to greatness I’ve been waiting for. We’ll know soon if it can deliver on that promise.

Kung Fu Panda: Showdown of Legendary Legends
This is a sight for sore eyes. Sure, there’s very little chance this will better better than average (and could actually be total trash), but I wanted to spotlight this for a reason. When so many kids games are going straight to phones and tablets, here’s a traditional animated tie-in getting flung on every console known to humanity. And of all of Dreamworks’ snarky characters, I’d say few are better suited for an average third-person beat ’em up than Kung Fu Panda. But did they pay the big bucks to get Jack Black and Bryan Cranston in the game? Guess we’ll find out soon, though I’m betting they didn’t.

The Walking Dead Season 5 Limited Edition
Just as season six has reached its midseason finale, here’s a fancy schmancy box set of the fifth year of everyone’s favorite zombie show. For all its exiting ups and disappointing downs, The Walking Dead seems to get bigger every year, and the same goes for the limited edition box sets. If you’re looking for a gift to give the TWD fan in your life, this would make for some pretty great shelf porn, even if they down’t own any of the previous years of the show.

Fear the Walking Dead: Season 1
If the fifth season of The Walking Dead isn’t enough to satisfy your cravings for human desperation and rotting flesh, then get the first year of the brand new spin-off. Set when the zombie outbreak first began, you can see a whole new group of survivors have their lives torn asunder, only this time it’s on the west coast! A perfect holiday gift for anyone who missed the spin-off when it first aired earlier this year, as the Xmas break makes a great time to binge on zombies.

Christmas Vacation
As far as classic Xmas films go, I’d put this one right behind It’s A Wonderful Life and A Christmas Story. Back before I found out that Chevy Chase was kind of a piece of crap, he was put upon patriarch Clark Griswold, who only wanted to have a happy holidays not ruined by his horrible extended family. One of the great National Lampoon’s films before the name was ruined by direct-to-DVD slop, this dark look at ’80s Christmas fun is still as exciting as it was all those years ago, and now you can have it on this new Blu-ray edition.

Miyazaki fans should not miss this one!

The Collected Works of Hayao Miyazaki
Hayao Miyazaki is the most celebrated animator of the last 50 years, and for good reason. Films like My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki’s Delivery Service, and Princess Mononoke are some of the most fully realized worlds ever shown in theaters, capturing the hearts of people from just about every age and part of the planet. Now that he’s retired, Amazon has an exquisite looking special collection of every feature length film Miyazaki directed all in one box set. Plus, there are some fantastic bonuses as well that will likely justify the price. Out this November, this looks like a great gift for those you love most.

  1. I really want to play Just Cause 3 and the new Rainbow Six but Fallout 4 is my everything right now so maybe sometime next year I’ll get around to Just Cause 3 and Siege.

  2. Henry – would you consider doing a full review of the Miyazaki box? I’ve heard a ton of conflicting reports on quality of the discs, debate over dub titles, and lack of features. I really want to get this set but I’m hesitant.

    1. I’ll look into it, but if the discs are all the same, Disney’s releases technically have do have dubtitles. At the menu, you just have to make sure to choose real subtitles and not the close captions for the dub. I’ll look into the rest

  3. Henry – would you consider doing a review for the Miyazaki box set? I’ve heard a bunch of conflicting reports on dub titles, lack of extras, and overall visual quality. I really want to get this but I’d be great to hear what your thoughts are.
