Ron Gilbert’s Thimbleweed Park Might Be The Best X-Files Episode Of 2016

The X-Files revival may not have lived up to expectations, but a new point-and-click Lucasarts-esque game featuring a pair of detectives may fill that void. Check out the new Thimbleweed Park trailer!

A new trailer released today for the crowd-funded point-and-click adventure Thimbleweed Park shows great reverence for some of the best sci-fi shows of the 1990s. With a locale (and population) reminiscent of Twin Peaks mixed with an X-Files-esque leading duo, Thimbleweed Park has a chance of eclipsing either of the revivals. With Ron Gilbert and Gary Winnick (developers from Maniac Mansion) working on a game with in the style of Lucasarts classics, this early look is very promising.

Of course, pulling off humor in games is no easy feat and we’ve still got a few months before the game releases this year, but at the very least, Thimbleweed Park should eclipse at least half of the episodes from X-Files’ mostly lackluster run. As a big fan of Maniac Mansion (which I need to lobby for inclusion on our music podcast VGMPire or on one of our weekly Twitch streams), this one has jumped pretty high among my most anticipated 2016 games. For more info about the game (including continued crowdfunding options for folks who want to play on PC, Mac, or Linux), check out the game’s official site!

  1. I haven’t played an adventure game in ages, but this looks interesting and appropriately Lucasarts-y. Everyone knows Lucasarts was superior to Sierra! Disclaimer: This is subjective. But Lucasarts’ games were a lot less murderous, usually.
