The Best New Amazon Releases: Mario & Sonic At The Ultimate Fighting Championship

Nintendo and Sega cross over for another Olympics, EA UFC returns for round 2, and new batch of top 2015 films hit Blu-ray in this week’s Amazon roundup!

What a big week for games! Not only do we have the Game Developer’s Conference happening in Laser Time Studios’ backyard, but we’ve got a batch of noteworthy new releases to discuss. Whether you want realistic violence on your new-gen console or mascots aplenty on Nintendo platforms, you can count on some pretty big games getting revealed and released this week. That’s not to mention the another Oscar-winning movie and one of 2015’s best comedies hitting Blu-ray! If you’re gonna pick up something we mention, please use the links on this page, but if you’ve got something else you need to pick up from the internet’s biggest retailer, just use one of these links and continue your search and purchase as normal, and we’ll still get a small commission. Reminder: if you have Amazon Prime, you can get a 20% discount on just about any physical edition of a new release or pre-order. And now, here are the games and movies!

EA Sports UFC 2
After a nearly two year sabbatical, EA is stepping back into the octagon for another new-gen fight. EA Sports UFC 2 adds a ton of new fighters like CM Punk, Mike Tyson, Bas Rutten, Kazushi Sakuraba, and the entirely new Women’s Strawweight division. The gameplay itself has been made easier to comprehend thanks to ground-grappling UI improvements. There’s also a slew of new modes to try out, as career mode has expanded to allow women’s weight classes to explore the entirety of a fighter’s journey to the top, an online Ultimate Team mode has been added to create the best fighting team possible using stat-boosting cards, and a live element will showcase every match on upcoming UFC events and allow you to bet on the fights for in-game currency. The coolest addition, however, is the arcade-like Knockout Mode, that showcases the insane hit physics as you take on opponents without any grappling and where only a few big hits are needed to win. You can start the fight on PlayStation 4 (shown above), or on Xbox One, or if you want a head start on Ultimate Team, you can get bonus points via the Deluxe Edition on PS4 or Xbox One.

Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games
Holy crow, can you believe it’s been almost 9 years since Mario and Sonic brought their respective universes together to compete in the most popular Olympic events? Even if Olympic-style games haven’t evolved much since Track and Field on NES (hit this button fast, hit that button in time with prompts, repeat), at least we’re getting the best possible cast of characters to run, swim, dive, and jump with. It’s a bit worrying that soccer and golf are being lumped into this minigame collection when there’s perfectly good standalone games for those sports, but these games can sometimes surprise you. Heck, we collected seven Mario Sports game innovations not too long ago. Anywho, you can get the 3DS version this week, but if you’d rather have HD visuals than 3D visuals, there’s a Wii U version due in June.

Pokken Tournament
One of the silver linings to the slow death of the Tekken franchise is that Bandai Namco are using their fighting game expertise to create new brawling experiences. Even though there’s plenty of Pokemon representation in the Smash Bros series, Pokken Tournament opens up a new avenue for pocket monsters to punch each other repeatedly. If you ever wanted to pit Chandelure (a living Chandelier) against a version of Pikachu who wears Lucha Libre attire, Pokken Tournament might just be a fight you want to pick. The physical edition also comes with a Shadow Mewtwo amiibo card, because an actual Shadow Mewtwo figurine is just too awesome-sounding to actually exist on store shelves. You can start the fur-filled fights on Friday, friends!

Senran Kagura Estival Versus
It’s time for your monthly dose of PlayStation-exclusive cheesecake! Instead of the usual RPG and visual novel flavors, Senran Kagura Estival Versus brings a brawler focus to this batch of barely legal and barely clothed ninja ladies. Now in its seventh iteration, SKEV on PlayStation 4 will allow 10-player fights featuring busty warriors as well as a story mode that puts you in the skivvies of a variety of fighters as they throw down during a beach vacation. as per usual for Xseed games, you can expect a bounty of bonus items in the box, like an art book, a set of “pin-up” cards, and a two-disc soundtrack set. VA-VA-VA-VOOM!

The Big Short
Well, it’s The Big Short! Now that I’ve proved how low-brow I am by starting off with a wrestling reference, you probably won’t take my word for it that The Big Short was one of the best Oscar-nominated movies of this year’s crop, second only to Mad Max and The Room. Adam McKay definitely deserved his adapted screenplay award for turning a very complicated financial crisis and making it somewhat easy to comprehend on-screen, and his adeptness at humanizing the cast of characters betting on the complete financial failure of Wall Street proves McKay is more than just a guy who can corral Will Ferrell and his funny friends. If you’re looking for a movie about financial turmoil that doesn’t celebrate dickheads (read; Wall Street or Wolf of said street), The Big Short is a great look at a crappy part of American history with a fantastic cast to boot.

As far as adult comedies go, the funniest movie (besides Inside Out) to release in 2015 wasn’t The Martian, as the Golden Globes would have you believe; it was Sisters, the top-shelf team-up between Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. While they’ve done great work together on SNL for years, the duo finally found their finest film role as the eponymous siblings who throw a crazy party to commemorate the sale of their childhood home. It veers a bit too far towards insanity at times, but the comedic chops of Fey and Poehler as well as a bevy of amazing supporting castmembers (including breakout star John Cena) makes Sisters a great comedy with great characters.

NXT’s Greatest Matches: Vol. 1
Welp, seeing as how I’ve slipped movie references into the last two blurbs, I might as well finish up the new releases by completely geeking out about pro wrestling. Even though I host a pro wrestling podcast, the last few years have not been the best for WWE (especially once CM Punk and Daniel Bryan stopped wrestling regularly). What’s kept me watchin rasslin? Three letters; NXT. For the last three-plus years, most of the WWE’s top new talent has made their way through this nascent brand. With shorter shows and tighter writing, NXT has been home to some of the best matches, stories, and characters in all of pro wrestling, and this video release is the best way to bone up on history and NXT’s best moments as this DVD segues between documentary style interviews and top matches. With the NXT archives recently getting removed from Hulu and no WWE Network release date in sight, this is the best way to see NXT’s finest fights.

Miyazaki fans should not miss this sale!

The Collected Works of Hayao Miyazaki
Hayao Miyazaki is the most celebrated animator of the last 50 years, and for good reason. Films like My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki’s Delivery Service, and Princess Mononoke are some of the most fully realized worlds ever shown in theaters, capturing the hearts of people from just about every age and part of the planet. Now that he’s retired, Amazon has an exquisite looking special collection of every feature length film Miyazaki directed all in one box set. Plus, there are some fantastic bonuses as well that will likely justify the price. Currently it’s less than $180, which is a fucking STEAL. If you love animation, BUY THIS.

  1. Everytime I want to get those Mario vs. Sonic games because there is one sport I’m like “I’d like to play that” but I can’t justify paying 50 bucks for it. Now if they sold sports on the eshop I’d love to pay 5-8 bucks for the curling from the winter one or rugby this year just for the hell of it.

  2. Sisters was the funniest adult comedy of 2015? Dave whadaya talkin’ about man obviously the best adult comedy of last year was Trainwreck! It even had sportsball! Sisters just felt lacking, and all the best jokes were given away in the trailer.
