Get To Know Hayao Miyazaki’s Animation Better In This Clever Video

Think you know Hayao Miyazaki? This video will open your eyes to some of his best, little seen work…

I thought I knew everything about legendary animator Hayao Miyazaki I’ve seen every film from his company Studio Ghibli, I’ve visited the Ghibli Museum twice, and I’ve covered him so much on Laser Time. I even own all the Blu-rays (both separately and as part of this fancy collection). But I was naive to think I’d seen everything he’s done in his five decades plus as an animator, as YouTube user magnil proved with this incredible compilation…

For the uninitiated, Miyazaki has a long career in animation prior to forming Studio Ghibli with Isao Takahata in the mid-’80s, or even prior to his directorial debut with Castle of Cagliostro  Before calling the shots as a director, he was one of the best animators in the world, giving his scenes a sense of speed and excitement that few had seen before. In those clips from early Toei Animation like Puss In Boots, you can see his passion for drawing destructive oafs…

While meanwhile you can see his mind-numbling superior skill when it comes to drawing literally dozens of characters onscreen in a massive sword fight/pirate battle from Animal Treasure Island as it’s known stateside…

Sword Miyazaki Smaller

The whole video is full of Miyazaki’s best specific animation work, so thanks to magnil for putting this together and setting it all to a wonderfully extended Lupin III music. magnil’s entire YT channel is invaluable to any animation nerd, and he’s done similar animator spotlights, like this one for Ghibli’s lesser known legend, Yasou Otsuka…

I hope these videos were as eye-opening for you as they were for me. Not to mention you can see the Laser Time crew’s group trip to the astoundingly lovely Ghibli Museum in Tokyo in the video below!

  1. Great little piece Henry!

If ya’ll wanna know more about Otsuka (who was Miyazaki and Takahata’s mentor during their Toei animation days, I highly recommend the documentary Yasuo Otsuka’s Joy of Motion (Ootsuka Yasuo no Ugokasu Yorokobi). It gives a lot of background to the days of pre-Ghibli and the development of the three men in their careers. It also shows a bit of Otsuka teaching current generation animators about the trade which is very heartwarming to see.
