The Best New Amazon Releases: Wear A One Piece To Dead Island

One of the most popular animes gets a new-gen game, a survival horror franchise goes definitive, and some big movies hit Blu-ray in this week’s new releases!

This certainly has been a month of feast and famine. One week is Uncharted, the next is Homefront. Last week was Overwatch, and this week is… well, you can see what’s on tap below. Still, the games below do have some appeal (with some neat movies to boot), but the big draw here is the 20% physical game discount for new games for Amazon Prime members (this does not include downloads and currency codes). With all of that out of the way, here’s this week’s eclectic slate of games and movies!

Dead Island Definitive Collection
The Dead Island franchise has been a divisive one. It’s got an open-world full of zombies, but has received criticism for lacking content and being overly buggy. Who knows how Dead Island 2 will fare later this year, but you can get both previous-gen DIs in a souped-form via the Definitive Collection. Both the original and the water-logged sequel Dead Island Riptide are available for $40 (and even less with Amazon Prime), and you can rest assured you’ll have the best-performing DIs possible (ones that can truly do the voodoo, bitch). Dead Island Definitive Collection is on the map for PlayStation 4 (shown above), but you can also visit on Xbox One. If you have Amazon Prime, you’ll save 20% on the trip!

One Piece: Burning Blood
Ah, it’s an anime pirate’s life for me. While I don’t watch much of that there Japanimation, One Piece does seem a bit more interesting than the standard robots and schoolgirl fare, feauting seafaring warriors that do battles on the reg. Built on the same  insane fighting engine as the Naruto series, Burning Blood will let you relive the show’s best battles from the comfort of your new-gen console. Be sure to keep an ear open for this week’s VGA, as one of us regular guests actually reviewed this one for a major outlet. Anywho, you can get a piece of this game on PlayStation 4 (via the link above) or on Xbox One. If you’re an Amazon Prime member, you’ll save 20%, which is One hell of a deal!

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Blood and Wine
Now THIS here is how you do an expansion pack. A year ago, The Witcher 3 cast a spell on PC and new-gen consoles, but after that much time, you’ve probably explored every inch of the open-world (and every character’s body via romance scenes). So why not enjoy a helping of Blood and Wine? B&W is The Witcher 3’s last expansion, which promises dozens of hours of new content for one of the best games of 2015. With 2016’s RPG slate a little empty thus far (besides Dark Souls 3), Blood and Wine is certainly a welcome cocktail. There’s currently no direct codes for the DLC for Xbox One and PlayStation 4 on Armazern, but $20 in Xbone or PS4 currency should cover it.

Gods of Egypt
Here’s a 2016 release that would have seemed antiquated in 2011. It’s a movie about Egyptian superhumans that stars a primarily white cast. It’s starring Gerard “somehow still a movie star” Butler almost a decade after his last high-profile release (300). While we can hope for some shouting and kicking dudes off of pyramids from the former leader of the Spartans, this flop at theaters has made a quick turnaround to high-def disc. If you like a dash of history with your action, this might be worth watching, as long as you ignore the aforementioned egregious and very inaccurate whitewashing.

Pride + Prejudice + Zombies
Here’s another movie straight out of the turn of this decade. Zombie comedies aren’t quite the draw they were during the days of Shaun of the Dead and Zombieland, but at least this one adds some neat Olde English costumes. This popular fancified zombie novel from 2009 may not have been a hit on the big screen, but the undead movie might get resurrected and find new life on small screens throughout the world. At the very least, this seems a tad more classy than the straightforward straight-to-DVD zombie schlock. Will Pride + Prejudice + Zombies equal fun for you? Get the movie and find out!

I’m a sucker for emotional sports biopics, and Race seems to have a head-start in that fashion. There are few events in sports history as inspirational as Jesse Owens winning at the German Olympic games and stuffing America’s superiority right in the face of racist dictator Adolph Hitler. It’s also got a phenomenal cast featuring Stephan James (from Selma) alongside the likes of Jason Sudekis, Jeremy Irons, and William Hurt. Plus, it’s probably got plenty of old-timey sports references, which makes this a gold-medal winner in my book. This might be our generation’s Chariots of Fire!

Triple 9
Rounding out this week’s collection of big-budget movies that faltered at the box office is the star-studded crime thriller Triple 9, which packed in almost as many big names as Ocean’s Eleven but failed to attain the same level of humor and financial success. I mean, where else can you see a big-budget crime story that features Ben Affleck’s brother, Jesse from Breaking Bad, Daryl Dixon from The Walking Dead, Falcon from The Avengers, the slave from 12 Years A Slave, Woody Harrelson, and Kate Winslet all in one sub-two-hour package? Nowhere but Triple 9, that’s where. At the very least, this movie sure to used at near-JFK levels for future playthroughs of “Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon.”

Miyazaki fans should not miss this sale!

The Collected Works of Hayao Miyazaki
Hayao Miyazaki is the most celebrated animator of the last 50 years, and for good reason. Films like My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki’s Delivery Service, and Princess Mononoke are some of the most fully realized worlds ever shown in theaters, capturing the hearts of people from just about every age and part of the planet. Now that he’s retired, Amazon has an exquisite looking special collection of every feature length film Miyazaki directed all in one box set. Plus, there are some fantastic bonuses as well that will likely justify the price. Currently it’s less than $180, which is a fucking STEAL. If you love animation, BUY THIS.

  1. I wonder if Race includes the fact that the Germans actually treated Jesse Owens with (grudging) respect and let him shake hands with Hitler, but when he got back to the US the President refused to meet with him and at his own victory party he was forced to use the service entrance. Owens faced far more racism from his home country than he did with the Nazis.
