Vidjagame Apocalypse 166 – Something In The Water

VGA166_edited-1

In belated tribute to the PS2 “classic” Jaws Unleashed‘s 10th anniversary last week, this episode focuses not on the triumph of being a shark, but the terror of being its victim, with a Top 5 about the most stressful games to swim in. Then it’s on to a heated discussion of One Piece: Burning Blood, Primal, Mighty No. 9’s latest trailer and the most memorable dreams you’ve had about games.

Question of the Week

What was the most frustrating time you lost a game purely because of a glitch or system failure?

  1. The people behind Jaws Unleashed really owe Mikel something for the amount of times he brings the game up compared to anyone else on the internet. I should really see if I can track down a copy of it sometime

  2. News flash to Chris: not everyone loves the same things about Megaman. The classic games are alright platformers with outstanding music. I tolerate them. I absolutely LOVE Battle Network though, and think that they’re very good, mechanically sound games with bubble-gum simple/charming stories. I don’t expect everyone to love the same things as me, but I appreciate not having the opinion dismissed.

I also happen to be the same guy who loves both of this month’s PS+ games. Love me some story-driven walking simulators as well as basketball. Much sweet.

    1. Indeed. I love the classic platformers, and have no tolerance for Battle Network.

      Different strokes for different folks.

  3. Wow, this was a super soapboxy episode! Using podcasts to argue with the internet seems like something someone with a podcast would argue against on a podcast.

I had just played several walking simulators when Gone Home came out on PS4, and though I’ve wanted to play it since it came out on PC, there had been a few games of its style on PS4 in the time before it made its way to PS4, so $20 seemed too steep to me. I’m glad I’ll get a chance to play it for part of the cost of my PSPlus subscription.

  4. Goddamn loved Chris’ rant on Mega Man. Gaming’s culture is so fucked it makes me want to go on a “God Bless America”-style spree and kick the shit out of these entitled, ignorant pricks who make game developer’s lives hell.

  5. For the record, what I want from Mega Man is for them to make Mega Man 11.

I want them to do the Mega Man 4 thing, where the badguy is someone besides Wily. You fight their 8 robot masters, then fight through their fortress and defeat them. Then it’s revealed that Wily is the real enemy, only instead of just playing through another fortress, Wily shows up with the 8 Robot masters from MM1/PU. And you have 8 more stages and THEN the Wily fortress.

Graphically, do the same thing Guilty Gear Xrd did. Made 3d models that just look like 2d artwork. And have the art just look like regular ass Mega Man(ideally, Complete Works-era). But for god sake, don’t fill the thing up with anime cutscenes or a bunch of talking.

Mechanically, it should play just like MM4(I want my slide and charge shot back).

And then, like 3-4 years later, do the same thing again with 12. New villain, 8 new robots, then Wily, bringing back the robots from MM2. And I’d be happy just playing those forever. I love playing Mega Man games. I don’t know why it’s so hard to get that I just want to play more of it.

Either that, or a Smash Bros. clone that’s all Robot Masters.

  6. Mikel, Ryan Kinnaird is the artist you were thinking of. I think I still have that swimsuit issue…

  7. To be fair, I think it was perfectly acceptable for people to express their displeasure with the ending to Mass Effect. That’s their right as people who bought into the story. To demand them to go back and change it? Well……different story.

And I want Megaman Legends 3. That’s all.

  8. There was this one time when I played alien isolation on pc…. I mean a P.O.S. laptop. It was at a point when I encountered 5 hostile survivors while being stalked by the alien. I was sneaking around the group when one of them decided to walk through the geometry and bump into me. Gunshots ensue, Alien gets alerted, I ran into a vent with a dead end… but I noticed something odd. The survivors were frozen in place from where they first saw me. I checked my task manager and it showed that I was at 100% cpu usage. Then the game got really slow for a moment before returning to normal… at that point the alien was in amoung the survivors killing them at what looked like fast forward speed before Wesker teleporting to me. And then my pc crit errors. Yay.

  9. Anyone who’s no longer looking forward to Mighty No. 9 should probably give 20XX a try. It’s a roguelite in the Mega Man X style, and while it’s still in early access I haven’t run into any bugs yet. I’ve had a lot of fun with it.

  10. What I want from a new MegaMan: MegaMan 7 + Metroid Prime, but I don’t feel like it’s my place to tell Capcom what to do with it. Honestly I think anyone who’s got some real strong feels about it should just take the Shadow Complex route and make your own homage game to something you love and maybe also shut the fuck up?

  11. QOTW.
I was playing Broforce on my kinda under powered pc. I put up with a few crashes along the way but I was getting close to the end and the alien levels were really cool. The last world is set in hell, my pc was really struggling, I fought through to the boss at the end but the wanton destruction crashed my game every time. I never finished the game, had to watch the final boss and ending on youtube. Sad times.

  12. QOTW: Not once, but twice has my roommate cursed me by walking in on me while I was finishing a game and having it freeze on me. Once in college, I spent close to 2 hours on the final fight in Sly Cooper 1, just beat Clockwerk, and as credits roll…freeze. Fast forward 2 years later, finishing Kingdom Hearts and hit the final scene with Sora and Kairi and once again, freeze. I’ve since told him to politely fuck off when I’m about to finish a game.

  13. QOTW: Back in high school, my parents bought me one of those third party memory cards with multiple “pages”. This particular one was supposed to hold fifteen times as much data as an official memory card. It actually worked for a few years, until I had the audacity to play through a game as long and slow-paced as Xenogears. About halfway through the game, the memory card magically lost all its data. I had the last laugh, however, as I threw it in the trash, bought a normal memory card, and proceeded to play through Xenogears multiple times in lieu of realizing that there were girls who would have dated me.

  14. QotW:
Back when I was a kid, my friends and I all got together to play through Wizards and Warriors on the NES. It was my friend Johnny’s turn (RIP), and he actually made it to the last boss! This was the first time any of us had seen the final boss, the evil pink wizard. In my youthful excitement, I started jumping up and down. The NES did not like this and BOOM! the game froze. The controller was thrown across the room and everyone got mad at me for ruining the game, losing our chance for ultimate victory. The NES was shut off in frustration and we never went back to Wizards and Warriors again.

Years later I would return to Wizards and Warriors and beat that stupid pink wizard in Johnny’s honor. I miss you bud!

  15. Gone Home is a great video game only ruined by the fact that it’s 2016 and text on screen legibility has not been fixed. We’ve been having this problem for 10 years, and we are constantly told to “buy a new TV.” Why don’t developers take readability in mind when designing their games? I know you guys are at least 30 years old, and our eyesight is definitely not the best it should be. Come on video game makers!
