The Best New Amazon Releases: On The Razor’s Edge of Rocket Carmageddon

Some crazy car action, romantic kingdoms, critically acclaimed anime, and WWE’s true bad guy headline this week’s biggest releases on Amazon. Check them out!

July has arrived, and after a refreshing three-day weekend, we’re ready to jump into another month of hot new content! We’ve got a new ‘Murica-themed Laser Time with plenty of great cartoon and celebrity clips and some fun new Laser Time, Patreon content, and vidjagame streams set to release during the heart of the summer. Unfortunately, this week’s Amazon releases seem to still be in vacation mode with movies and games that are good, but not quite enough to compete against the big digital sales we’ve seen on Steam, PlayStation Network, and Xbox Live. Still, some of these new releases are pretty appealing, and if you’ve got Amazon Prime, you’ve already got a great deal to pounce on as new physical releases are already reduced by 20%! Now lets get to these games ‘n movies!

Rocket League: Collector’s Edition
It’s been a pretty big year for Rocket League. After launching on July 7 of last year on PlayStation Plus, RL has soared as a bonafide e-sport and has amassed a huge following on every platform it’s landed on. For all of that, though, it’s still only been a digital release. That changes this week with the launch of Rocket League: Collector’s Edition which packs in cars-full of DLC, an expanded season mode, and the award-winning racing/soccer hybrid for a pretty great price! Rocket League is flying to PlayStation 4 (shown above),  Xbox One, and PC. Regardless of which console league you’re playing in, you’ll save 20% as an Amazon Prime member!

Carmageddon: Max Damage
Thank goodness for crowdfunding. After securing an initial PC release thanks to Kickstarter, the long drive to modern consoles has now concluded. While Max Damage doesn’t have the same level of the PC release Reincarnation (not to mention Carmageddon 2: Carpocalypse Now), it’s still a welcome return of car combat to consoles. Mowing down pedestrians and fellow car carnage enthusiasts to the extent that an M-rating will allow, Max Damage has packed in a ton of content (cars, campaign events, and collectibles) for a cheaper-than-normal retail price. Carmageddon is imminent for PlayStation 4 (shown above) and Xbox One and you can enjoy Max Savings with Amazon Prime thanks to its 20% discount!

Romance of the Three Kingdoms XIII
Short of Mario Brothers, Donkey Kong, and Final Fantasy, there are precious few series that have released with the regularity of Romance of the Three Kingdoms over the last 30-plus years. As far as historically based strategy goes, it’s still the standard bearer for the genre, though this thirteenth entry is the first to land on next-gen consoles (specifically PS4 as the US won’t be getting the Xbone version that hit Japan). Granted, the ROTTK series isn’t known for pushing consoles to their limits, but it’s nice to know that you won’t have to hook up an old console if you’re looking to reignite your romance. It won’t cost a kingdom for Amazon Prime members to get this PS4-exclusive, as there’s a 20% discount for you!

Only Yesterday
Even it wasn’t directed by Hayao Miyazaki, Only Yesterday certainly has the legacy associated with Studio Ghibli (who produced the movie). Originally released in Japan 25 years ago on July 20, 1991, Only Yesterday is a deep historical drama that explores the life of an adult woman in Japan from her youth to adulthood. It’s rarely the kind of movie you see in general (and in anime, too), so it’s well worth seeking out this classic Japanese movie. It also stars Rey herself Daisy Ridley, in what’s sure to be one of her few non-Star Wars roles over the next half-decade.

Living on a Razor’s Edge: The Scott Hall Story
Now here’s a wrestling DVD that can deliver both drama AND awesome matches. Scott Hall’s career has been an interesting one, as he went from WCW obscurity to WWE fame to NWO legend with classic matches like WrestleMania 10’s ladder match and Bash at the Beach 1996 along the way. Behind the scenes, however, is an insane real-life story that involves a fatal shooting, extreme drug and alcohol abuse, and (fortunately) redemption and a second generation of in-ring superstars. You can check out the first half-hour for free on the WWE Network, and if you’re like me, you’ll be hooked on seeing the rest of Hall’s story play out in the way that only WWE’s crack team of documentary-makers can provide.

House of Cards: Season 4
The way I see it, there are two types of people in this world; those who stopped watching House of Cards after the first season, and those who still seek out every new episode of Netflix’s first big drama. If you’ve followed the ascension of the duplicitous Frank Underwood in the seedy underbelly of Washington D.C., you know that it can be gripping and intense like few other modern shows. What better way to celebrate America’s recent 240th birthday than by checking out this violent and angry chronicle of (only slightly) fictionalized politicians?

By The Sea
Wow, this is not what I expected the sequel to Mr. & Mrs. Smith to look like. All kidding aside, Angelina Jolie’s budding directorial career has included some very interesting choices. From Bosnian war to the story of an Olympic athlete P.O.W, Mrs. Pitt has been anything but traditional when it comes to making moves behind the camera. Even if “a strained couple trying to patch up a marriage while on vacation” sounds like a tried premise, you can rest assured that this real-life couple will make for some great relationship drama on-screen.

The Collected Works of Hayao Miyazaki
Hayao Miyazaki is the most celebrated animator of the last 50 years, and for good reason. Films like My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki’s Delivery Service, and Princess Mononoke are some of the most fully realized worlds ever shown in theaters, capturing the hearts of people from just about every age and part of the planet. Now that he’s retired, Amazon has an exquisite looking special collection of every feature length film Miyazaki directed all in one box set. Plus, there are some fantastic bonuses as well that will likely justify the price. Currently it’s less than $180, which is a fucking STEAL. If you love animation, BUY THIS.
