This week in 86 saw the end of a Chipmunks season and three less-than-good Nintendo games, then in 96 Baz Luhrmann’s hyperactive Romeo + Juliet stormed in theaters as Hank Scorpio made The Simpsons’ eighth season a hit. Then. 2006 brought us Borat. It was VERY NI… good.
Other topics covered include:
Crocodile Dundee still #1, will be until the end of November
Let’s Get Harry – Mark Harmon, Gary Busey, Robert Duvall. Director Stuart Rosenberg used famous pseudonym Alan Smithee. Famous cases where a director used their real name in theaters, but changed for TV, airlines etc are: Meet Joe Black, Dune and The Guardian, a horror movie that ends with a bloody tree full of infants. The Mission also releases in theaters.
10/28/86 – The TV Movie MANHUNT FOR CLAUDE DALLAS airs, based on the true story of a mountain man who killed two game wardens in Idaho. The movie features the likes of Rip Torn and Brent Spiner, as well as the film debut of Annette Bening.
10/29/86 – St. Elsewhere. Guest stars Wil Wheaton as a 14 year old med student.
10/31/86 – The A-Team episode The Say U.N.C.L.E. Affair airs, pairing ATeam season 5 addition Robert Vaughn with his former The Man from UNCLE costar David McCallum. Also, Murdoch impersonates Frank Sinatra in this episode
11/1/86 – Final two Alvin & The Chipmunk episodes of 1986 airs:
NES games! Ninja Kid, super bizarre game that barely made sense to me back then. Based on a Manga but all that was stripped for US release. Plus Chubby Cherub and MUSCLE, based on the toys.
AND “Hooping It Up” The Chipmunks, the Chipettes, and a tough group of older students participate in a 1950s-themed scavenger hunt at school.
11/2/86 – Murder, She Wrote. No huge guest stars, but great episode title.
The Commodores – United, Repossessed – Kris Kristofferson
Kool & The Gang – Forever, Elton John’s least favorite album Leather Jackets, coked up
Bad Company – Fame and Fortune (most known for Feel Like Makin’ Love?)
John Lennon – Menlove Ave, 2nd posthumous album
Roxette – Pearls of Wisdom debut album, Goodbye to You
Timbuk3 – Grettings from Timbuk 3, Future’s So Bright
Luscious Jackson – Fever In, Fever Out, Naked Eye
Wilco – Being There
Danzig – Blackacidevil
Ghostface Killah – Ironman
Slipknot – Mate Feed Kill Repeat. Debut album, limited release in 96, band considers it more of a demo now than true first album. Track titles are references to Werewolf The Apocalypse. Heavy metal, funk, death, finding their sound
Romeo+Juliet, Dear God, Larger Than Life and Bad Moon release in theaters
10/29/96 – The Roseanne episode “Satan, Darling” brings on the leads from Absolutely Fabulous as guest stars. Also Roseanne dreams that Darlene has a “Rosemary’s Baby” style childbirth
11/3/96 – Another classic Simpsons episode, “You Only Move Twice” airs, featuring The Simpsons moving to Cypress Creek where Homer finds a new job working for supervillian Hank Scorpio. I remember FOX hyping the move as a big thing for some reason, like it would be permanent.
10/30/96 – The premiere and series finale of Public Morals aired. Produced by Steven Bochco and starring Donal Logue, it debuted to critical scorn and low ratings, so the other 12 produced episodes never aired.
10/30/96 – Two more notable finales this week, as The John Larroquette Show was canceled three episodes into its fourth season. Even though Larroquette toned down the dark nature of his show about a recovering alcoholic and had a Frasier cameo in its season premiere, it was abruptly cancelled and the remaining season 4 episodes didn’t air until the show was rerun on the USA Network.
11/2/96 – The 193rd and final episode of the original Ninja Turtles cartoon airs. At this point, CBS, like most networks, was phasing out of animated Saturday Morning cartoons, so only eight episodes aired this season. Shredder and Krang were no longer the main villain (that role belonged to a character named Lord Dregg) and only appeared in half the season’s episodes.
Twisted Metal 2, Wave Race 64, Legacy of Kain: Blood Omen, Jet Moto and Soviet Strike all release
Bat out of Hell III: The Monster is Loose – Meat Loaf’s sequel to 1993’s Part II. So we’re coming in with Objects in the rear view mirror may appear closer than they are, it’s 10 minutes long and sold 14 million copies so let’s discus MEAT LOAF
