The new year begins with a whimper in terms of new games, but some enticing Blu-rays pick up the slack for the first Amazon roundup of 2017!
Welcome to 2017, mofos! We’re all set to reconvene at Laser Time studios this week to give you more of the podcasts and videos you so desperately crave, and the 2017 content starts with great stuff like a podcast featuring Laser Time’s favorite TV and movies of 2016, and a fantasy fight featuring the fiercest females from Overwatch (Vidjagame Apocalypse‘s Game of the Year!). We’re a bit ahead of the rest of the media-producing world, as the paltry game and movie selection ends 2016 with a big of a drought. Don’t forget; most pre-orders and new physical game releases on Amazon come with a sweet 20% discount for Amazon Prime members. With that in mind, here’s the games and movies!
MX vs. ATV: Supercross Encore – 2017 Official Track Edition
The first retail game release of 2017 may have the longest title of the year, too! MVA:SE2017OTE, even abbreviated, is a longer title than most major games, but all of those words mean that you’ve got a pretty boss-looking racer featuring the most up-to-date tracks, racers and additional content on modern consoles. MX vs ATV has been a pretty reliable racing franchise for well over a decade, and hopefully THQ Nordic’s decision to revive the series’ former publisher doesn’t mean this series is once again headed to Valhalla.

Girls: The Complete Fifth Season
The last two seasons haven’t been Girls’ strongest due to the constant dividing of the signature quintet across the country and continent, but there were a few bright spots. Adam Driver really came into his own as a character, starting a relationship with the similarly flawed Jessa, while Shoshanna’s overseas adventure at least made for some brilliantly-shot Japanese scenes. Lena Dunham and Allison Willams’ stories over the season (the biggest arcs) dragged, but each character had a breakout episode as Hannah went on a women’s retreat with her mother and Marnie reconnected with an old flame. As the show ramps up to its final season, it’s worth seeing the setup.
The original Blair Witch Project is almost old enough to vote, and it’s you cannot deny the cultural impact of the pioneer in found-footage horror. However, attempts at follow-ups haven’t fared quite as well. :Last year’s Blair Witch reboot was another sad new step in the franchise’s history. In fact, it wasn’t even the best movie last year with the word “Witch” in it (per our discussion of The Witch on our best movies and TV of 2016 podcast), but hey, at least it stuck to the original’s ethic instead of being an utter mess like Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2.
What great timing! Just two days after Mariah Carey had one of the worst-ever live performances during New Year’s Rockin’ Eve 2017 (check it out here), her worst-ever film performance is immortalized on a dirt-cheap Blu-ray. Watch as Carey somehow fumbles the role of a rising diva starlet in her only real blockbuster starring vehicle (one that disproved that Carey couldn’t follow Whitney Houston’s jump from music legend to bankable movie star). At least MC’s still making great TV!
Gone in 60 Seconds (1974)
Now that it’s been over a decade-and-a-half, can we finally, as a society, agree that the original Gone in 60 Seconds is far better than the 2000 remake. Okay, GISS is important in that it set the pace for car-based movies (which the Fast and Furious series has continued) after a relative dearth during the 90s, but the 1974 original is definitely the stronger (and should be more memorable) entry. Having caught this flick during a showing at the Castro a few years back, the 40-minute car chase scene is something I will never forget despite how many fast cars I watch fly by on the big screen. No, that’s not a typo; there’s a 40 MINUTE CAR CHASE SCENE. If you haven’t ever seen it (and this movie) before, it’s worth a watch, even if the dialogue and dubbing is almost as big a wreck as some of the cars during this movie.
