Vidjagame Apocalypse Mini – Holiday Gaming Adventures & Mass Effect March

Mikel is out sick recovering from a case of the 2016s, so Chris, Brett, and Dave cook up a quick VGA where they chat up some game deals, discuss their holiday gaming accomplishments, muse about Mass Effect Andromeda’s release date, and somehow get sidetracked by the KonMari Decluttering Method. Don’t worry, everything will be back to normal next week!

  1. I was glad to see Mass Effect finally getting a release date. I’ve pretty much wanted another since the moment I finished 3 and it’s one of my most anticipated games of the year (up there with Resident Evil 7 and Insomniac’s Spider-Man).

  2. QOTWs: having not played much of say my favorite game of the year is world of final fantasy. The combat is overall solid but what really makes it standout is the interaction between all the chibi final fantasy characters and the localization. There’s Bartz Tidus cloud squall lightning Yuna celes Terra quistis Tifa Cid hero of light shelke rydia chocolena (or whatever her name is) and a couple more. But the way they interact and bounce of one another is great such as Rydia heading to a volcano in an attempt to overcome her fears but keeps getting freaked out by bombs or cloud and celes trying to put on the play from FF6 only to get interrupted by the squid monster from another ff game. There’s iconic locations such as Balamb Garden from ff8 or Alexander who took on a bridge form. All the iconic monsters from the ff series show up Marlboro chocobo tonbery all the summons and even the mechs such as the ride armor show up and can be fought to use in fights and rides. Finally the characters Lann and Reynn always have me interested in there story and laughing. There’s even an airship but it’s not used for much this time around.

  3. Obvious choice, uncharted 4. Surprise award goes to furi, grimm always talks about it and for good reason, give it a play… its really worth it
also shadow of the beast on ps4, most probably just the nostalgia talking but that game is a perfectlove letter to fans of the original amiga game

  4. 2016 seems to have been the year of remasters and older games for me. I spent a lot of time after New Year playing Yakuza 5 and Fallout 4, which came out in 2015, then flash sales on PSN gave me enough reason to buy the PS4 versions of GTA V and Tomb Raider, which I had played on PS3 enough years ago to play them again. I think the game I actually enjoyed the most in 2016 was the PS4 version of Rise of the Tomb Raider, which was new this year. Over the holidays the Playstation store had good deals on quite a few of the games I heard being discussed in Game of the Year podcasts that I hadn’t tried, so I got to pick up Oxenfree and the Witness, but 2016 seemed like a really down year to me.

  5. I tried. I really tried.

I was rooting for FF15 to be a good game but it SUCKS.

It’s not even an rpg – it’s a dumbed down open world action game. It feels like Squeenix learned all the wrong lessons from an Assassin’s Creed game and slapped Final Fantasy on their attempt to make one.

I got four hours in and quit in disgust. The combat is just holding down one button to win.

How more fucking dumbed down does it have to be? I am now dreading the FF7 remake.

Easily the worst game and biggest disappointment of the year and it continues the definite pattern of every FF sucking after 10.

  6. I preordered Mass Effect: Andromeda with some Christmas Gift Cards so in the end I spent $10. I’m OK if the game comes out to be good but not better than ME3. I was wondering if they’d keep the single player separate from online or blend in everybody else’s Pathfinders in your world ala Ubisoft’s way of multiplayer seamlessly blending into single player. I played ME3’s multiplayer for over a year, did the campaign three times, so either direction they go with I’ll be on board. Good to have a release date now.
