The Best New Amazon Releases: Mr. XXX Robot

Without any new games to tout, we’re extolling the virtues of some impressive new Blu-rays in this week’s roundup!

January may be starting slow, but Laser Time is back in full force! Even with no new games to capture our attention, there’s plenty of new LT content to consume like our 2017 return episode of Laser Time, a Vin Diesel-filled battle royal, and the proper return of Vidjagame Apocalypse later in the week. While none of the movies below qualify for the price cut, keep in mind that new games and pre-orders (like the ones at the bottom of this page) come with a sweet 20% discount via Amazon Prime. Also, and purchase you make on Amazon in the same visit after clicking a Laser Time link helps out the hosts of the fourth leading pop-culture podcast. You can literally buy ANYTHING, it doesn’t have to be any of these products.

Mr. Robot Season 2
If you listened to last week’s Best of 2016 Laser Time, you know that Mr. Robot has fast become a favorite of the LT gang. It’s got ties to 80s and 90s sci-fi and pop culture (peep the Sega-esque logo and the recent Alf cameo). It may have a simple name, but the lore is already pretty complex after just two seasons. However, we can already give this show the accolade of being the best post-Duckman show on the USA Network. Take that, Monk and Psych!

His Girl Friday
Permit me to get all Diana’s Classic Corner on you, but His Girl Friday is my oldest favorite movie. Yes, even a year before Citizen Kane told the epic tale of a newspaperman, HGF showcased a madcap workplace romance that’s only *slightly* inappropriate in this day and age. Even if he’s keeping a coworker occupied with the intent to keep her from marrying another man, Cary Grant is quite the charmer and it’s easy to see why this flick got the Critereon treatment.

XXX 15th Anniversary
And here’s ANOTHER cinema classic getting a Blu-ray rerelease. Oddly, I’ve only ever seen Ice Cube’s take on the extreme sports James Bond, but with Xander Cage making his cinematic return this year (despite dying in a DVD extra on the sequel) I’m curious to see where Vin Diesel’s most notable non-scifi non-animated non-driver character got his start. In the meantime, check out the aforementioned Vin Diesel battle, embedded below!

The Accountant
A quick look at this box and you might think that it’s Ben Affleck slipping back to his non-descript action roles like Reindeer Games or The Sum of All Fears, but he’s more than just a dude with a gun. He’s a high-functioning autistic guy with a gun! I have no idea how Affleck performs in the role, but he’s surrounded by a top-notch cast like JK Simmons, Anna Kendrick, Jon Lithgow, and Jeffrey Tambor! I might give this movie a look on a lazy Sunday sometime and give you my… account.

Deepwater Horizon
Did you like Mark Wahlberg’s most recent blue-collar biopic based on a real-life event? Well, be sure to check out this baby from last year. Yes, the actor who said he could have prevented the 9/11 attacks stars as an oil driller stuck on a sinking rig in this recreation of a tragic 2010 oil spill that killed 11 people. If anything, this should be an easy biopic to watch, given the unflinching villainy of oil companies who pollute our seas and seek profit over all else.

  1. The best thing about the Deep Water Horizon movie is that ten minutes in Walburg explains to his daughter/audience how an oil platform can explode with a Cola Cola, saving you from the remain seventy minutes of the film.

Also I pray that Ice Cube cameos in XXX 3 and the franchise eventually fuses with Fast&Furious; he plays both Xander Cage and Dom. Sam Jackson teams with Kurt Russle. Ice Cube is also there.
