  1. We had a heatwave back in June that was not dissimilar from the one the Simpsons face in this episode, but luckily we already have had a poor for years, so comfort was easily attainable.

This is another one of those episodes, much like Rosebud, where I loved the episode as a kid, and then later saw (and loved) the movie it was paying great homage to, and that only made me enjoy it even more when I revisited it. And I agree with what you guys said, the title makes very little sense given that this episode has nothing to do with Heart of Darkness or Apocalypse Now.

Another great episode, keep it up gang!

  2. My biology degree is tingling, hair is technically in the dermis, the epidermis is the most outer tissue referring to the keratinocytes, hair just sticks out of the epidermis.

  3. The pool truck was totally a thing! I remember seeing it once in the summer in Hollis, Queens. Before I could be a latchkey kid my mom would send to New York for the summer to stay with family. I had to be 6 when the pool truck stopped on hour street and I lost my shit! I wasn’t allowed to go in because my family thought it probably wasn’t clean. And like Bart, I only saw it on our block that one time. He’s a vintage article referencing it.

  4. Damn I gotta say Chris could probably get voice work. He’s always doing voices and that Fred Flintstone was dead on and cracked me up.

    1. Henry tries to do, “Oh boy Bobby” on Talking Critic, and it doesn’t sound very good, and it made me think of how good a job Chris does at various voices.

  5. I loved this episode so much as a kid, even if I was extremely envious of the fact that the only time I ever got to go swimming was with my daycare program. Every summer the organization would walk us about a mile or two toward the park, pass the crosswalks. It was a pretty cool place as it seemed so big and there were multiple pools and showers. Of course, I would find it tiny now as I am much bigger than I was. Even though I only had one or two swimming lesson, I would forget them and romp around. I did not enjoy floating on my back at all. Anyway, back to the episode, it introduced me to quite a few classic movie tropes, from the Hitchcock murder mystery to the “Gatsby” style swimming scene I’ve seen on PBS documentaries.

Did any of you talk about the 1940s film “Bathing Beauty” referenced in Treehouse of Horror 3?

  6. Hey guys, love the show! This was always one of my favorite episodes as a kid, great to hear you go in-depth about it. I hate to be a Comic Book Guy-level nit-picker about one of your facts, but Ravi Shankar is not Nelly Furtado’s father. He is, however, Nora Jones’ father! That fact blew my mind a little when I learned it, so I thought I’d share. Keep up the great podcasting as always!

  7. Hey guys, as a Titmouse animator I respect what you’re saying about flash and flash studios. Most times the content is limited and looks like cheap cutouts without the design appeal of Ed Benedict or the charm of a John Hubley. If you’re basing your comments on the Adult Swim work, yeah, I can totally understand animation fans having issues with those shows. That said, there’s some incredible work being done. I’m not sure exactly what can be shown so I’ll point you to Jeremy Polgar’s animation reel from Motorcity and other projects:
    https://tinyurl.com/ybcosb9x
    Mike Carlo motorcity work: https://youtu.be/TBWcC7immQw
Niko and the Sword of Light also has some stronger work: https://tinyurl.com/y76r23zx
Here one of my little scenes that was so much fun to do: https://tinyurl.com/y79w268v
Not only Titmouse but there’s Powerhouse , Mercury Filmworks and many more studios are attempting to improve on the cut out style. It may not always work but we do our best with the schedule and limitations of the show. Just thought I’d share the perspective of someone in the trenches.

  8. “Oh, I’m gonna miss the whole summer.”
“Don’t worry boy, when you get a job like me, you’ll miss every summer.”

I think this episode is when I first really grasped the truth in that statement. I was 16 at the time so I intellectually knew that adults didn’t get a summer vacation but I don’t think it was emotionally real to me until the summer of ’94 when I got my first job. I remember watching this episode when I was back to school and thinking, “Heh, that’s funny cause it’s true. Wait a minute, it is true! I may have made a lot of money this summer” – minimum wage of course but far more cash than I had ever gotten in my life, “But I did pretty much miss the summer and . . . and . . .holy shit, I’m going to miss every summer from now on! Forever!”

And now as a 39 year old with job, house, kids . . . yea, summer is mainly a time to turn the air conditioning up and it doesn’t have 1% of the magic it had when I was a kid.

  9. In the early days you guys had the good fortune to have the Halloween Special line up with the week of Halloween. Since then you’ve often commented on how you wished you talking about the show would line up with the time of year the show was aired, Thanksgiving commentary on Thanksgiving, End of the Summer at the end of the Summer, etc. Well I had some free time and decided to plot it out! (Yes, this was the most productive use of my free time, why do you ask?) On the assumption that once a year you will have some type of special episode that will add an extra week to the schedule, the next time you will be talking about the episode when it actually airs will be . . . 5/5/2020 when you will be talking about Last Tap Dance in Springfield which aired on May 7th, 2000 .

As mentioned before, if at all possible I think you should try to make this come about so that you can have a special crossover with Thirty Twenty Ten where you cross the streams and talk about the exact same event! 😉
