Vidjagame Apocalypse 228 – Total Eclipse

Remember earlier this week, when it seemed like the whole world was consumed with eclipse mania? That was enough to inspire this week’s topic, in which VGA vet Henry Gilbert and first-timer Matthew Jay join us to discuss five eclipses that were used as major plot points in games. We then move on to Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, Madden NFL 18, the blink-and-you-missed-them SNES Classic pre-orders, and your favorite Sonic the Hedgehog games.

Question of the Week
What’s a game or franchise that doesn’t have a story mode, but that you’d like to see get one?

  1. I would love to see Overwatch get a story mode. The characters and setting are so strong and fun that it almost seems like a waste not to have one

  2. Nice SNES preorder stories..I wasn’t so lucky. I was half awake when the Best Buy one went up…then Amazon screwed me over cause they used another page all together…and bots ruined Walmart/Target/GS online.

Couldn’t leave work to go to GS physically.

Hoping for a day of release waiting in line…again.

    1. Despite being a shitty game, Beetlejuice has some pretty nice background music. It goes well with the conversation

  3. I was so pleasantly surprised to hear talk of Heart of Darkness in this episode. I can’t imagine it holds up worth anything today, but MAN, was I thoroughly charmed by that game in the august days of the PS1. The cutscenes and character animation and music cues all made me feel like I was playing a Saturday morning cartoon.

    1. My wife called Heart of Darkness, “The game where the boy falls a lot”. I enjoyed the game, I just wasn’t very good at it.

  4. First things first. Bravo to Mikel for sneaking that Klaus Nomi track into ep 228’s first set break.

Racing games like Excitebike or Mario Kart could use a story mode. This terrible idea is based on Ridge Racer Type 4’s story mode. In R4, each team’s manager had a unique backstory and archetype. Winning or losing races would progress their story in a positive or negative way. The catchy soundtrack and visuals (for a PS1 game of that era) brought the story portion of R4 to the forefront of the gameplay experience. I feel other racing games could benefit in the same way.

    Finally, “ah, Punky…”

  5. Doubt it was talked about this episode but I really like Agents of Mayhem. Great characters and fun gameplay that I dig. It’s not the kind of game I’ll marathon for 12 hours straight but that is fine. Probably another game that will get way more shit than it deserves. The gaming community is all about hopping on a bandwagon and riding it without much critical thinking.

  6. QOTW: Euro Truck Simulator 2. It’s not enough to know that I’ve run my company into the ground after investing in too many garages and not enough trucks, I need to know exactly why Istvan is such a poor earner. Did he wet his beak in that last run of ice cream to Prague? Is all that time he wastes spent avoiding rival trucking cartels that he’s double-crossed in the past? So many questions…

  7. QOTW: Overwatch deserves a proper story mode. I love the characters and the world, but the game itself lacks any real sense of narrative. I hate when a game expects you to find its story outside of the game itself (looking at you Destiny). The game needs a dedicated story mode or more frequent story driven events, like the omnic crisis event, more than it needs new maps or characters.
