Vidjagame Apocalypse 239 – Be Your Hero’s Hero

With Sonic Forces fulfilling countless [Your Name] the Hedgehog fantasies with its character creator this week, erstwhile host Henry Gilbert helps us focus our Top 5 on five other games that let you squeeze a version of yourself into an established universe and battle alongside – or against – its heroes. Then it’s time to shift gears and talk about Call of Duty: WWII, Horizon: Zero Dawn – The Frozen Wilds, the Xbox One X, Sony’s Trophy-based discounts, awful Bubsy puns, and the forgotten mascots you’d drag back from oblivion.

Question of the Week
What franchise that doesn’t have created characters would you like to add them?

  1. Question of the Week here due to spam:

Any fighting game! In a genre all about colorful characters, the predominant lack of this feature in many fighters is still bizarre. Immediately there would be cries of “but it’ll unbalance the game”, to which I say it doesn’t stop Smash Bros with its Miis and any wrestling game from still being fun, who decided fighting games were only for hardcore tournament players!? While games like Tekken and Injustice have gear and Soul Calibur basically had you just reskin existing fighters, I want system where you can pick everything from backstory, body, style, moves, specials, essentially like wrestling games allow. Mortal Kombat tried this with Armageddon for PS2 but it was one and done despite working pretty well. Also you’re telling me people haven’t made self-insertion characters for Street Fighter?

  2. QotW: Ace Attorney! Sure it’s fun playing as Nick, Apollo, etc. But imagine having a Create-an-Attorney feature…Arm chair attorneys such as myself would be in heaven. I could live out my dreams of being a hot shot lawyer and laying the smack down on Edgeworth. The feature could be incorporated into the story as you, the unknown lawyer rising through the ranks of the Wright Anything Agency. Multiple paths taken, corruption, evidence forgery…it would be an epic game!

  3. QOTW: I really liked the character customization in DC Universe Online, being able to make your own superhero (or villain) and join ranks with the biggest characters in DC, even choosing a mentor. It would be cool seeing this either outside of an MMO setting and still with DC, or doing the same within Marvel (and if it’s already happened there it’s probably in a game I’ve never heard of so my bad).

  4. QOTW: I am absolutely frothing at the mouth to be able to project my bitter and cynical 28-year-old self into a Witcher game. Witcher 3 devoured many hundreds of hours of my life, and I’d love to be able to create a custom cat-eyed monster slayer after my own likeness (or a more flattering version, at least). Witcher schools could represent different classes and offer different playstyles, sort of like Witchery Mass Effect. Except with many, many more rampant sexual escapades.

  5. I had a lot of fun with The Godfather on Xbox 360, I was in my mid teens when the game came out and had also just recently seen the Godfather (a few kids my age talked about it at school so I checked it out). It wasn’t the best game in the world, but it was a really solid open world game, and while it did get repetitive at times, there was something about taking over businesses I really enjoyed.

  6. QOTW: Though I’m not sure if the series will continue but I’d say Danganronpa. Create the design for the Ultimate you play as and pick their skill. And there is some basis in the existing games but that would be spoilers.

  7. Probably Far Cry would work the best, since who really cares about the story anyway? Or maybe Horizon: Zero Dawn, since its 3rd person and what’s the point in customizing your character if you can’t see it anyway. Basically, I just want to run around an open world as myself hunting and shooting shit with a bow and arrow while also setting traps to cause mischief and possibly death to all those who dared cross me or have the misfortune to simply be around me when I’m bored. Then I can skedaddle while survivors and witnesses angrily shake their fists at me while yelling “OOHHHH, IMA GET THAT SUMBITCH!” like a jungle/Montana/Post-post-apocalypse Boss Hog.

    1. I can’t believe how many times I saw that movie in the past 10 years alone. There is a CW subchannel called This! and they air that movie a lot. My favorite scene is definitely the one with Fleemer watching the Godfather Part II.

  8. Jeez, it is insane that Telltale put out so many things and has been for quite a while. You’d think this would be a company to learn NOT to act like a big name publisher like EA, especially when the impression is that they were small. Even in the early days of Sam and Max, they freakin’ made two Law and Order games at once. Those 90 people they laid off could’ve been made to work on a new engine! Heck, maybe bring back 2D Point and Click adventure games!

  9. QOTW: Mega Man! Let me customize my own Robot Master to fighting all of the established Mega Man characters and even Mega Man himself!
Fulfill all my wet dreams and use the Battle Network theme with Net Navis and data chips in a Bloodborne style game. Capcom! Call me!

  10. @ Chris (on the topic of 4K gaming) – Interesting that you needed to reset your TV to access 4K. BUT… I’m worried that you also actually need to buy new HDMI cables. Not just any will do.
And only the newest standard will allow 4K @ 60 frames/hz which is what the Xbox One X could possibly offer if devs want to develop for it.

Amazon Basics is the easiest, cheapest way to get the newest standards. They always offer the latest standards on Amazon Basics cables.

If you’re using old HDMI cables that are 1.3 or 1.4 , they won’t even deliver a 4K signal and you might as well gouge your eyes out if you can’t watch The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown in 4K.

Also, the more important reason to update your cables is HDR and Dynamic HDR makes a bigger improvement (to most people’s eyes) than 4K, but Dynamic HDR only works with the newest HDMI cables, iirc.

  11. QOTW,- If Bandai Namco decides to make another JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure game, maybe more like an Animal Crossing set in Morio Town or Naples, Italy I would like to make my own character going about his/her/their life and are suddenly thrust into his own series of strange events. While I don’t want to design what the Stand (persona) of my character will look like, it would be cool to develop it kinda like a Pokemon depending on the choices I make in the game. All the player would have to do is design what the character will look like and que sera. This could also work for the 2.5D fighting game like All-Star Battle as the Stand can grow along with your fighting style. Though it’s a pipe dream.

  12. I would insert myself into a Metal Gear game so I can try to talk Snake out of taking seriously a guy who thinks he tricked himself into thinking he was possessed.

  13. For what you get, the X is a great value. And Chris, MS is absolutely still pushing the S. Spencer has come out and said they expect to sell more of the S and see X is more of the product for the ‘hardcore’ audience. I bought the scorpio edition and love it. You can absolutely see the difference and I can see it on my 600 dollar 4k HDR tcl TV. As for launch games, almost every game is a launch title with upgrades specifically or just in general better performance. The difference is a noticeable difference that once you finally see it, you’ll realize it. And the big games right now are the Origins, WW 2, Wolfenstein, BF2, etc right now so those can help move the system.
And the big Xbox digital sales are coming during BF week, that’s when they usually have tons of games on sale and have for years now.

  14. I don’t know if this is cheating or not, but I would bring back the character creator in Dragon Quest. My favorite game of all time is Dragon Quest 9 (which is conveniently the only one with character creation) and I would love to see that brought back. The player controlled characters are always mute in the Dragon Quest series, so I see no reason that you shouldn’t be able to create them. Plus, I’ve been more attached the characters I’ve made in my multiple play throughs of 9 as opposed to the wondering, 16 to 18 year old silent guys I take control of in every other Dragon Quest. This is mainly do to head cannon but I can’t help it. Cheers!

  15. I’ve had this “GTA meets Batman: No Man’s Land” idea in my head for about the past decade now. If you don’t know, No Man’s Land was an epic Batman story from the late ’90s that took place after a massive earthquake struck Gotham City and did so much damage that the U.S. government disowned the entire island. It was total anarchy, with Batman and his fellow Gotham superheroes staying to maintain order, as well as much of the Gotham City PD. Meanwhile, criminals like the Joker, Two-Face, Penguin and even Lex Luthor saw this as an opportunity to rule the town. The event even prompted DC to create an official city map for the first time ever, and it was often updated to show the territory held by each faction.

So, my idea (which is way too big to ever be executed as it should be, but indulge me here): The game starts out with the great cataclysm, and you’re just a normal person going about his or her day. You’re unable to evacuate, and being stuck in Gotham, you soon learn you have several paths to take: Help out Team Batman and/or the GCPD by infiltrating a gang of your choice in Gotham (Joker, Two-Face, Penguin, whoever) — Sleeping Dogs style — or go full minion and work your way up through the criminal ranks.

Along the way, you’ll face pivotal moments like offers to join rival gangs and betray your current employer — yes, you can be two-faced toward Two-Face. If you’ve gone bad, the more successful you are, the more attention you’ll get from the heroes, and you’ll have to avoid them as well. You know you’ve hit it big when you’re not just evading pursuit from the likes of Spoiler and Huntress, but from Batman and Robin themselves. And maybe you’re STILL doing those kinds of missions if you’re undercover for Batman to maintain your cover.

Man, I want this game so bad! Are you listening, Randy Ma at DC Games?

  16. QOTW: I want to go with the Persona series. Yes, I know the main character has a defined look and personality, but I DON’T CARE!

  17. QOTW:
The purrrrrrrect answer to this question is Godzilla: King of the Monsters. Design your own Kaiju monster, with spikes, claws, wings, and various nuclear fire breathing orifices. Fight against and alongside all your favorite monsters, and probably date them too because why not. Something like Spore’s creature creator would lend itself well to crafting hideous beings that will no doubt be a part of our coming nuclear wasteland future.

Further, the game should be on Switch where you can play as a giant size version of your Mii, dressed in a Godzilla costume and destroying downtown Tokyo.
