Vidjagame Apocalypse 242 – Nintendo Games on Other Platforms

Mikel isn’t here this week, and it’s probably because he’s playing Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp on iOS. To commemorate that, we recount the five most important Nintendo franchises that came to other platforms with special guests Matthew Jay and Wes Green. After that, we discuss a dearth of game deals, a bit of PUBG news, Battle Chef Brigade, your best bargains, and our pie-in-the-sky Switch ports!

Question of the Week

  1. QotW: Street Fighter V! As an avid Street Fighter fan, more Street Fighter is NEVER a bad thing! Damnit Capcom, give us some fucking games!

  2. Due to a lack of HDMI ports and owning a 4K tv I’m someone who only views the Switch as a handheld thus had no tolerance for Zelda and to a degree Mario as i have 0 tolerance for long term handhelds I gabba go with Cuphead which I’ve yet to get deep in because it’s such a chore that I don’t want to play when I set at my desk. Cuphead is the PERFECT game for my work especially since the visuals & frame rate wouldn’t be hampered at all. It would be kinda good business for Microsoft to port it to Nintendo especially for an IP exchange liek say Bayonetta II.

    1. Oh hey youse guys mentioned VR and I actually got an Occulus Rift last week new for $350(no taxes) I live above a bar so I didn’t quite have Vive space but the rift has actually been quite fun

  3. QOTW:
I’d go with the LittleBigPlanet franchise. Their family-friendly, shenanigans-heavy platforming, powerful level creation tools and the Switch’s already built-in coop with the Joycons would make these games a fantastic fit for the system. Nothing would be more awesome to me than building a kickass 2D platformer level on the bus and share it when I get home with the rest of the world.

Another one would be Dreams, but who knows when the hell that will come out. Today, the best option on the Switch would be Lego Worlds.

  4. Besides, the virtual console DK Original edition which was given out as a code (that game is actually based on the NES version with the original missing level added back in) the entire arcade version is actually playable in DK64 of all places.

  5. Chris is correct. There is a version released for the 3DS that has all 4 levels. You had to buy a qualifying eshop title to redeem it

  6. QOTW: Rare Replay would be an instant buy for me. There are so many N64 games that are difficult to revisit, dragging out your N64, hoping to god your TV can even play it, untangling the controllers, fighting over the one working analog stick and spazzing out at the frame rates is just not worth it. Banjo and Kazooie pretty much belong on a Nintendo console though, and who knows maybe they could finally throw in the DKC games. In the very least give us the monkey rap.

  7. QOTW: Until Dawn. Mostly because I’d like another excuse to play it, and more exposure for the game would be good and possibly inspire an actual sequel of sorts (not counting that VR rollercoaster thing).

  8. Question of the Week
What PlayStation, Xbox, or Steam exclusive (including first-party games) would you put on the Switch?

I would love to have South Park the fractured but whole. Whenever I sit down to roam through south park, the only thing that goes through my mind is: “why they hell is this not on the switch?” The game seems like it would be made for the switch. I know I would play it a lot more if I could grab my switch and play south park while I am on the go.

  9. Man that sucks about neir. It was 35 bucks on Friday on the psn store and I snagged it. That deal did not happen early either so I thought it wasn’t going to be on sale. Sounds like Chris missed out, unless he was holding out for physical

  10. Awkward Loser has the perfect answer.

So… since Civ 6 has some issues and Civ 5 is a bit older and should run on the Switch as well as benefit from good touch controls and the “one more turn!” addiction, I’d like to see Civ 5 get ported.

I was also thinking Divinity: Original Sin 2 could be cleaned up from the slightly messy PC keyboard layout the same way Stardew Valley was and that would make me happy.

  11. Qotw: Well if I could choose an exclusive to come to a different console, I would bring Cuphead to the switch. Having such a fun and addictive game on the go would be a great addition to an already stellar line up on the Switch.

  12. Every week I seem to call for a Shin Megami Tensei game on the switch. This time around however, it’s Persona 5. Persona does seem to be a Playstation Exclusive Series though, so it makes sense. I would still put 100+ hours into a Persona 5 Crimson, should it ever come to light on the Switch.

  13. QOTW. I too want a SMT game on the Switch, but how about Devil Summoner? It’s one of the better PS2 games in the series and it has a rather anachronistic soundtrack that still fits well with the awesome battles in the game.

Grand Theft Auto Vice City would also be an excellent choice and fit for the console’s Neon color scheme. It would be great to play as Tommy Vercetti driving through a fictional Miami with the Joy Cons matching the color of the signs. It doesn’t have to be uprezzed but made slightly less blurry, similar to the PC version. Who wouldn’t want to sing along to the Bangles song while gunning down Jamokes while on the can?

  14. QOTW: I’m still on the fence about the switch. Not because I’m not interested in it, but because money is tight and I’m not sure I can justify the expense. That said, something that would help is a port of Spider-man. I’m buying that game either way, so being able to pick it up for switch would grease the wheels on the purchase of that console.

  15. QOTW I’d have to say XCOM 2, firaxis has already ported it to literally everything else and the first XCOM was ported to mobile with no problems.

Basically I just need an excuse to play XCOM 2 again.

  16. QoTW: I’d go with Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain . It would be a nice time killer to have as I look for high level soldiers to balloon back to Motherbase and capture the nostalgia of playing a borrowed PSP with Peace Walker on my commute to work and school.
