VGA 266 – The Comeback Kids

What do the new God of War and the YouTube Red series Cobra Kai have in common, other than the fact that they both feature leads with anger management issues? They’re both new entries in franchises we thought we’d moved on from, yet turned out way better than we could’ve hoped — or even asked for, for that matter. The comeback success of these two dormant franchises got us thinking about some other gaming franchises that came back seemingly from out of nowhere to re-establish themselves as heavy hitters. On this week’s show, Alaina Yee joins Matty Allen and Chris to look at the top 5 comebacks in vidjagames.

  1. No QOTW this week, huh? Oh well, I’ll share an anecdote either way.

I’m supremely grateful we got Fallout back. Not because I like Fallout 3 (quite the contrary, I abhor it), but because we got New Vegas out of it. That remains one of my favorite games of all time, and likely will hold that crown for a long, long time. It’s so easily modded that I can’t help but love how each time I start it up, I’m guaranteed a totally different experience. On top of that, unlike so many other Bethesda titles, the main story is actually quite excellent, meaning I can enjoy the game for its vanilla content in addition to what DLC and mods can add to it. That’s the sign of a special game, right there.

  2. Street Fighter IV! The day that trailer dropped, my friend Mike who I haven’t heard from since high school called me just to tell me about it. Needless to say, I was hyped. Not only did it lead to me reconnecting with my old friend, it also lead me to discovering and getting involved in the Dallas/Ft Worth FGC.

  3. QotW: Obvious answer, but Metroid. The first real game since 2010 is being released w/ Prime 4 this or next year.

  4. QotW: Yeah, Metroid twice over. The break between Super Metroid and Metroid Prime/Fusion felt like forever. And as Lasertimerules said, the current drought on mainline Metroid games about as bad.

I’d also like to give a shout out to Picross. There was a Gameboy game and a Japan only release on Super NES (Super Famicom). Then nothing until DS. Now they’re getting release pretty regularly on 3DS and there’s even one on Switch.

  5. QotW: Street Fighter IV. I remember when that first trailer dropped, my friend Mike who I haven’t heard from since high school it me up to tell me about it. Not only did it lead to me reconnecting with my old friend, but it also lead to me getting involved in the DFW FGC.
