Vidjagame Apocalypse 278 – Starting Out Strongest

Tons of games load you down with an arsenal’s worth of guns and gadgets, but sometimes, it’s the one essential tool or weapon you get right from the start that turns out to be the most fun and effective thing in the game. This week, John Brandon of Square Roots Podcast drops by to chat about five of our favorite starter items, each of which would have been enough to carry us through their games if it came down to it. (And because this episode was recorded early so Matt could go to Gamescom, we’ll get to the QOTW answers next week.)

Question of the Week:
What’s your favorite piece of starting gear from a game?

  1. I can never bring myself to sell the starting equipment of Persona characters because they are stylish pieces of clothing, even if what I pick up in dungeons are so much more superior.

  2. Dante’s sword and pistol combo from Devil May Cry 3. While the weapons you unlock are fun and specialised in ways that make select fights a walk in the park, Rebellion (the sword) alongside Ebony and Ivory (the pistols) are always useful and boast the most combo potential, especially when upgraded.

  3. QotW: The grappling hook and cape in Arkham City. Gliding around Gotham and seeing comic landmarks like the Iceberg Lounge, and Ace Chemicals was an amazing experience. While the other gadgets were cool they didn’t make me feel like I was stepping into Batman’s boots. The grappling hook and glider cape did.
