Them Bones – Vidjagame Apocalypse 285

As any toddler can tell you, nothing is more terrifying than a skeleton – except, of course, if they’re on your side. And with MediEvil turning 20(!) this week, Josh Shoup (of wrestling-history podcast Pody Slam, among others) joins to help dedicate our first Halloween-themed episode of 2018 to skeletons who saved the day. We then touch on WWE 2K19, Call of Duty Black Ops 4, and Zelda’s “easy mode” before taking a look at your favorite narrative-focused games.

Question of the Week:
Who’s your favorite monster protagonist?

  1. QOTW:

It’s an oldie but a goodie: the centurion from Altered Beast. Sure, he’s a normal human man, but give him a few minutes and he’s suddenly a werewolf with a jet knee, a fireball-spitting weredragon, or a goddamn werebear.

Seriously, a werebear. That’s like, half-were, half-bear. And that’s awesome. He’s my pick for that reason alone.

  2. QotW: if you consider dhampirs monsters, then my favorite is Alucard in Castlevania Stmphony of the Night. Loved using all the vampire abilities in that classic game.

  3. QotW: Bert from Monster Party. You’d think helping him save his Monster world, he’d be grateful..but noooooo…asshole tricked you in the end.

  4. Can I get a sense check on how many non-Europeans played Medievil 2? Copies are a dime-a-dozen in the UK, but I hear the NTSC version is super rare. A shame, as I think it’s a far superior game – technically better, more fun and a really atmospheric, ‘Jack the Ripper-era’ London setting,

  5. QOTW: My favorite playable monster is Snorlax. He’s a fat fuck who just wants to sleep forever and is always in the way. #relateable

  6. I’d have to pick Raziel from Soul Reaver. Running around the world of Nosgoth as a terrifying zombie vampire skeleton felt amazing. I loved being to surprise bad guys by shifting into the ethereal plane and then revealing myself in the physical plane, so I could beat them up and gobble down their souls. Once you get hold of the Soul Reaver blade in the game, you then become even more of a bad-ass, and a fully powered up Raziel could wander around the game world wrecking havoc among Kain’s minions.
Special mention must also go to Firebrand, in the hard-as-balls Gargoyles Quest games. As much of a pain in the arse that he was in the G&G titles, getting to play as the little fire-spitting menace was great fun.

  7. QOTW: Do fighting games count? In that case, there are many candidates, like Godzilla from Godzilla Destroy All Monsters Melee and his many other games, vampiric Raphael from some of the Soul Calibur series, the entire Darkstalkers cast, but the iconic one has to be Blanka. As a kid, to me he stood out from the colorful cast of fighters as the only non-human, he had his electrical attack that anyone could do (just mash the buttons!), and it turned his opponents into Looney Toons being electrocuted!

  8. QOTW; the greatest playable monster character is Necrid from Soulcalibur 2 because listening to people groan with frustration when they get reminded that he exists is fun.
