The Greatest Cheats Ever – Vidjagame Apocalypse 328

Cheat codes may largely be a thing of the past, but this week, we’ll look at five cheat codes that became important and iconic enough to earn a place in gaming history – and even to influence its course. Things then take two distinct political turns: first, we dig into piloting a presidential mech in Metal Wolf Chaos XD. Then, we talk about a different President trying to turn games into a political punching bag, after which we wrap things up by talking about your favorite developer workarounds to behind-the-scenes issues in videogames.

Question of the Week: What’s a game you couldn’t beat without cheat codes, and which codes did you use to get by?

  1. QotW: Even in 93 I sucked at FPSes, so I cheated my way through Doom (and a year later) Doom 2. IDDQD (god mode) IDKFA (all items/keys), and IDSPISPOPD/CLIP (no clipping) were my saviors. This was the only way I discovered John Romero was my bitch when I killed his decapitated head in Doom 2.

    1. Similar to DQD, IDSPISPOPD (no-clipping in Doom 1) comes from an in-joke.
It stands for “Smashing Pumpkins Into Small Piles Of Putrid Debris” which was suggested on a usenet group as the un-coolest possible game name (opposed to Doom).
The phrase was later referenced in a Doom Novel and acknowledged by The Smashing Pumpkins, who put samples from Doom in one of their songs.

      1. i always wondered what the hell the long ass clip code meant in Doom. Thanks for enlightening me. And they put doom samples? I might have to check that out.

  2. When I was a wee lad, my step brother and I used to simultaneously play Wolfenstein 3D by sitting in the same chair. He would shoot, and I would move. I’d also be responsible for hitting the ‘ILM’ cheat any time our health or ammo would get low.
Kids are cheating bastards, what can I say?

  3. QotW: Big Starcraft & Warcraft player, and loved fucking around with the cheats. Especially loved the ones that played the bonus tracks Medieval Man and Radio Free Zerg. Anyway, codes I used were the money, god, instant build cheats.

The metroid rumor I heard about Justin Bailey was it was a code that meant Just in Bailey. Supposedly Bailey meant out of clothes in England or some shit, I forget exactly what I was told as a kid. Here’s a fun metroid code to put in ENGAGE RIDLEY MOTHER FUCKER (PS don’t put that in, it’ll crash your game)

  4. QOTW:

When I was a kid I used to love Kid Icarus, even though it felt unfair and impossible most of the time. Then I learned the code ICARUS FIGHTS MEDUSA ANGELS which warps you to the final level and had you very powered up. It was the most fun that game was to me back then. I tried hard to get to the final level but never could actually do it without this code.

Also, I used to play DOOM with the codes but instead of IDKFA I would just input IDFA to get all the weapons but not the keys, this meant I still had to play the game partially as intended and find the keys in the levels to progress.

  5. NFL Blitz had codes where you could alter both the gameplay (no fumbles/interceptions, etc.) as well as including Raiden or Chinook.

Wampa_Stompa in Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire allowed you to have weapons at 100% (including the BFG shells), and the jet pack at the beginning instead of waiting for later (it was the only way to get all of the Challenge Points in the Hoth Stage.
There were other codes in Star Wars: Rogue Squad unlocking additional fighters (including a flying car).
