The Best New Characters of 2019 – Vidjagame Apocalypse 346

2019 has been a great year for new and original games, and it’s introduced a ton of fresh characters to the gaming canon. This week, Leif Johnson of joins us to talk about five (OK, six [OK, seven]) new characters whose antics this year left us wanting to see more. Then it’s on to MechWarrior 5, SuperMash, Nintendo Direct and Sony State of Play (we’ll talk about the Game Awards next week), and the games that convinced you to get a PlayStation.

Question of the Week: Who’s your favorite new character from a game that came out this year, and why?

  1. that water subscription service really does sound like shit a bay area techie would come up with..geez. Sometimes living in the bay is such a pain in the ass with all the techies

  2. QotW: Best new character for me is V from Devil May Cry 5. I loved playing as even more emo Adam Driver and his snarky animal pals. His presence also was an interesting change to a lot of the DMC formula.

  3. My choice between 360 and PS4 came down to Metal Gear Solid 4, but let’s stop living in the past. I might have to buy the Series X, my first Microsoft console, because did you SEE that Hellblade 2 trailer? Senua is NOT fucking around. She’s been to hell and back and man it shows. Holy shit that trailer!

  4. QOTW: My favourite character of the year is Bernadetta from Fire Emblem Three Houses. As per my fine tutoring she evolved from a frightened mouse of a girl into the most skilled, nimble sniper in all of Fodlan. Also, blue hair.

  5. Why does Chris state non-facts so easily? It leads uninformed people astray who don’t do research. Felix the Cat was not owned by many companies. Felix the Cat is a family business. Felix has been licensed to many companies for products like videogames.

Anyone reading this, do yourself a favor and watch the 90s Twisted Tales of Felix the Cat episodes voiced by Thom Adcox-Hernandez (not those voiced by Chicken from Cow and Chicken aka. Charlie Adler).

      1. You are correct. I did not know about this recent acquisition; however, during the episode, you stated Felix’s rights had been passed around from company to company like syphilis at an orgy. Ok, that last bit was added for flair, but you did say his rights had been acquired by many companies which is not true.

I’m not liking the fashion angle so I hope something else comes of this that isn’t the cloying 60s version. I guess it gets Felix into the minds of the public, so it’s good.

I always thought this character was interesting since he could literally shape his reality. The 90s show is like some of those Fleischer shorts.

I think we are simpatico on a lot of things, having grown up on much of the same media (one step in the cartoon and black-and-white TV shows of the past and the blazing internet future); however, sometimes I believe you do shoot off your mouth. It’s the nature of the in-the-moment conversation being recorded. Given time and research, those things could have been re-worded.

I also do like how comments under episodes are read. I thought this would probably end up sent into the ether. Since I have your eyes, could a Felix the Cat Lasertime be in the works? I recommend the book Felix: The Twisted Tale of the World’s Most Famous Cat by Jon Canemaker. It has pictures!
