Soul Shepherds – Vidjagame Apocalypse 439

Today marks the return of Spooptober, when all of our shows are Halloween-themed for a whole month — but since it’s just getting started, let’s ease in with guest Greg Moore and five games that let you play as a psychopomp, someone who guides the dead into the afterlife (or, y’know, just punches their ticket, one way or another). Then we’ll pivot to ActRaiser Renaissance, Death Stranding Director’s Cut, Outer Wilds: Echoes of the Eye, last week’s Nintendo Direct (including THAT casting news), and whether you like episodic games better than stories you get all at once.

Question of the Week: So who would YOU cast to play Mario and the rest of the Mushroom Kingdom crew?

  1. QOTW: I would cast Robert De Niro as Mario. He could definitely offer an authentic Italian Mario, it would be like an animated Bob Hoskins in a way. I would also cast Gilbert Gottfried as Luigi. His unique voice would be a perfect alternative to De Niro. As for extra characters, I have to go with the obvious choices: Danny DeVito as Toad and Keith “Motherfuckin'” David as Bowser.

  2. QOTW: The Mario movie casting is extra frustrating for me because the ideal cast seems so obvious. Mario should be played by Ray Romano (he’s so cool!), and of course Luigi should be the lovable coward Brad Garrett. Then you have Patricia Heaton as the natural choice for Peach (her chemistry with Ray would be a delight). Basically at that point the movie casts itself, you have Doris Roberts as Toad, Peter Boyle as Bowser, Chris Elliott as Donkey Kong and Fred Willard as Cranky Kong.

  3. QotW: Daniel Day Lewis should be made to method act as Bowser. After that it’s kind immaterial who is the movie, but it would be one hell of a flex to win Oscar number four playing a video game character.

  4. QOTW:
Here’s my re-cast for the Mario movie, focused on comedians and voice actors…

    Mario….Patton Oswalt
    Luigi…Nathan Barnatt
    Princess Peach…Milana Vayntrub
    Bowser…Samoa Joe
    Donkey Kong…John DiMaggio
    Cranky Kong…Lewis Black
    Kamek…Billy West
Toad(s)…a rotating cast of Justin Roiland, Pendleton Ward, JG Quintel, and Steve Blum as “cool Toad”

  5. Not qotw.
I think the reason why sealed Fortnite discs are going for crazy money is that it contains a code for founders status.
It allows you to earn Vbucks for free playing save the world by doing challenges in it.
Some people may think spending a chunk of change will be cheaper in the long run.

I personally have no desire to keep playing a separate move just to earn them, my time is better spent playing games I want to play and play the BR when I want to.

  6. QOTW:
    Mario: Bob Hoskins
    Peach: Judy Garland
    Luigi: Donn Knotts
    Bowser: Marlon Brando
    Toad: Peter Lorre
    DK: Seth Rogan

  7. I like this podcast. It’s one of my favorites even through I barely even qualify as a casual gamer, but listening to Chris drunkenly slur and scream his way incoherently through half the show is becoming really grating. I’m sure this comment won’t be posted, but I can’t be the only one who has concerns about Chris’s well-being and the overall affect this will have on the Lastertime Network as more people start to find it unpleasant to listen to.

    1. Man, I was gonna say this. I’m not some prude who doesn’t drink or something, but damn; that was a tough listen.
