Stuck on Wii U – Vidjagame Apocalypse 498

With this week marking the 10-year anniversary of the Wii U’s release, TL Foster joins us for a look at five of the coolest games that still haven’t made the jump to Switch. Then we’ll dig into Pentiment, Tactics Ogre: Reborn, and Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, check out The Game Awards 2022 GOTY nominations, and hear you talk about old stuff you’re not nostalgic for (but still love hearing about anyway).

  1. Qotw: The Nintendo first party game I’d like to see re-addressed is Wario World for the GameCube. It was a fun beat’em up/brawling platformer based around Wario losing his castle and his fortune and beating the money out of the monsters who took it. It had a very different flavor than Mario 3d platformers being more about combat puzzles than platforming puzzles. The game was also full of really weird and interesting bosses like a flying angel baby that spat fire, a very flamboyant half man half bull, and the creepiest floating head that poops bombs you’ve ever seen.

  2. QOTW: Give me more Wave Race or Ice Hockey. Nintendo needs to make more sports games that don’t have Mario in them . I haven’t played a Chel game since Wayne gretzky’s 3D hockey . I need a hokey game for the filthy casual.

  3. Base Wars would be awesome to see on modern consoles. Think of all the upgrades and robot anatomy changes that could be worked in

  4. QOTW: I would love to see Nintendo go back to some of their long dormant puzzle franchises. Dr. Mario, Wario’s Woods or Yoshi’s Cookie. I want them to take inspiration from Tetris DS and add extra modes and new ways to play these games. I think the puzzle genre is a great base for a game and doesn’t need to be all it is. Similar to the NetherRealm approach to fighting games, they take the fighting base and build a great game around the core mechanic, let’s see that happen with puzzle games with a dash of Nintendo Magic sprinkled in.

  5. QOTW: The one true answer is probably something like Golden Sun or Chibi-Robo or some shit, but I’m a hack so I’m repeating an answer I gave a few weeks ago and say the Wario platforming series. I know I gave it a middling endorsement, but WarioLand II specifically holds up great. All the games gleefully animate Wario in a way that can only be described as “delightfully corpulent,” without making it a point of ridicule. Finally, they never apologize for making Wario a bastard. He’s never a roguish antihero with a secret heart of gold. He’s a greedy jerk through and through, and even when he saves the day its merely incidental to him attempting to hoard wealth.
