I thought I hated this movie, but that’s sort of the point of the movie: To make you feel conflicted. I’m neither a sports fan, let a lone a fan of the ultra-boring pastime of baseball, but the story of Bill Beane’s mathematical formula to “break” the game is a fascinating one indeed, and the film does a fantastic job in investing you in the dilemma. Are you for the purity and hero worship of baseball, or are you rooting for the underdog so hard you’re willing to sacrifice the aspects that make it special? What Do the Right Thing does for racial relations, Moneyball makes you feel for sportsmanship. Speaking of which…

Do the Right Thing
One of my favorite movies of all time, and without a doubt, the greatest thing Spike Lee has ever done. Watch racial tensions come to a boil on a single New York block populated by seemingly dozens of some of the finest actors working today before they were famous. I’m not talking Rosie Perez here, but big performances from Ossie Davis, Danny Aiello, John Turturro, Samuel L. Jackson and yes, even Martin Lawrence, in small yet effective roles. It’s a movie that’ll make you mad, but at no one in particular. Nobody’s wrong, nobody’s right, but you get all the context you need to understand the way they feel.

It’s a sad week, as far as games go. Such is the case with January/post-Christmas in general. This being the sole notable release of the week depresses me too much to make a joke about it. However, there’s some good stuff on the horizon, which you can see highlighted below, along with in-store credit deals and pre-order bonuses.

Boardwalk Empire Season 1

A Martin Scorsese-produced prohibition era HBO gangster drama starring Steve Buscemi?! Wait… why was I so bored by this then? Boardwalk Empire should’ve been right up my alley, but the first few episodes didn’t interest me all that much, so once my HBO subscription lapsed, I couldn’t even muster the interest to get together and watch this at a friend’s house (people who don’t care for sports still enjoy group viewings, ya know?) Whatever the case, I’m more than willing to give it another shot. And since this is currently the lowest-priced HBO season set I’ve ever seen ($34! more than 50% the standard $80 asking price) I see no reason not to.

Killer Elite

JASON STATHAM: WHAT MORE DO YOU NEED TO KNOW?! Well, Clive Owen’s a highly underrated badass, too. And it’s be nice to see Robert DeNiro, formerly my favorite actor living or dead, in something that may not be utterly embarrassing. This one came and went pretty quickly, and I know of no one who has seen this throwaway movie. However, the title leads me to believe we’re in for something rewardingly dumb.

The Breakfast Club

Given Laser Time’s recent discussion on the fine, fine films of John Hughes I thought mentioning the recent rerelease of The Breakfast Club on Blu-ray was more than worthwhile. In case you didn’t know, Universal Pictures is celebrating its 100th (!!!) anniversary by releasing some of the greatest movies in its stable at extremely low costs starting this week. The titles are almost too numerous to mention, but hey, I can try! You’ve got King Kong, Hellboy II, American Graffiti, Tremors and more.

One of the finest conclusions to a world ripped away from us all too early… As much as I hate to refer to this as a “finale” to Firefly, it is the last we’ve seen of Captain Tightpants and his gang, and it looks like it’ll remain that way. And I don’t care how man times I have to buy it, I will ALWAYS purchase Serenity on any format its released purely out of slavish devotion! I’ll never part with my HD DVD, and I’ll be buying this one again solely for the digital copy that now comes with it.

  1. I’m going to be the guy who admits he hates Firefly and Serenity, in hopes that being a jerk will make this terrible universe reward me with gifts.

    1. Nah just angry comments saying “you’re a terrible person go choke on your lame stream shows” hopefully it works out!

      1. Most of the time while I was watching Firefly I was wishing I was watching Brisco County Jr. again. Firefly’s not bad, but I like Brisco’s future in a cowboy world better than cowboy in a future world. And how can you beat Bruce Campbell and Julius Carey? You can’t, not even with Nathan Fillion.

  2. Inversion still a thing? damn. I want to pry away from Best Buy since they screwed me out of 100$ so Amazon will hopefully be my venue this year. But that Firefly Blu-ray movie hmmm….

  3. I’m currently enjoying Warehouse 13, found it after I went into mouring aftering finding out SGU was cancelled after 2 seasons.

  4. I feel a bit a spoiled asking for a $20 amazon card after being gifted the Humble Indie Bundle from LaserTime during the last contest, but what the hey I’ll throw my hat into the ring.

  5. Got Firefly on bluray, Serenity only on DVD. What a rutting shame! I’m gonna need the blu version anyway, so I may as well order from amazon through lasertime! Love the podcast. VGMpire, too! Shiny! I’m in a similar frame of mind when it comes to wanting to have Firefly and Serenity in any format in which they come available. “I just get excitable as to choice, I like to keep my options open.”

  6. I won’t use the US Amazon store because I’m the UK but I will click on every ad I see on the site because I <3 Laser Time

    1. Things that are better than Bullet Time: Laser Time. Hammer Time. Busta Rhymes. Optimus Prime. Organized Crime. A Metal Slime.

  7. I didn’t buy anything listed, but I did get Shadows of the Damned.
The honorable mention in VGMpire’s Year in Review finally got me to do it.

  8. For further adventures of “Captain Tightpants and his gang“ check out the serenity comics not only did whedon write most of them patton oswalt wrote one
