Top Amazon deals for January 24th

GOJIRA! You look at the week’s best media deals AND a chance to win a Laser Time T-shirt!

Help support Laser Time simply by shopping Amazon through us! Entering the web’s leading superstore through ANY link below (or on the right sidebar) costs you nothing and earns Laser Time a small commission. Some great movies come out this week on DVD and Blu-ray, but once again, the vija gamez category is fucking pathetic. However, that all ends next week with the release of Final Fantasy XIII-2 and Soul Calibur V, which you can find special deals, $10 credits, and pre-order bonuses listed below, among many other upcoming titles. And to thank you kind folks for listening to our show and this support spiel, we’re giving away a FREE T-shirt of your size and choice from the freshly unveiled Laser Time Store!

Real Steel
God help me, I’m dying to see this. A man comes together with his estranged son through the magic of Cyber Cockfighting?! Plus, several of the reviews I read told me the film takes what should be an alarmingly stupid premise and turns it in to a  solid little sports film with a crapload of heart. Either way, ROBOT BLOODSPORT!

50/50
I still find Seth Rogen’s shtick comedically worthwhile, and I’m loving how Inception has pretty much turned my perception of Joseph Gordon-Levitt from “that weird Eskimo girl from Third Rock From the Sun” into Hollywood’s unlikeliest badass. Oh yeah, Brick helped with that too.  Anyhoo, who wouldn’t want to check out a modern comedy centered around the hilarious pastime of dying of cancer? You know, for yuks?! Actually, the backstory about the screenwriter penning the film to cope with his affliction and getting his buddies to star in an unlikely comedy is a pretty heartwarming tale indeed. I’ll be checking this out.

Paranormal Activity 3
I’ve yet to see one second of the Paranormal Activity Saga, but if I’m going to check out a film shot exclusively on a baby monitor/security camera, you’d better believe I’m gonna do it on a 1080p Blu-ray. In all seriousness, I’m incredibly interested in this series, since I’m one of the few people who holds up The Blair Witch Project as a solid scare built on a clever concept. Oh, and I totally got burned trying to watch this on Netflix with the fucking ripoff Paranormal Entity, and just assumed the series sucked until I was informed months later that I didn’t actually see the first PA. True Story!

Godzilla
This here’s my pick of the week, by gosh! There are few thrills more worthwhile than watching a classic monster movie,  and this is the granddaddy of them all! I wish I had a better metaphor, but Godzilla is basically the Godzilla of big ass monster movies (Pulitzer, please!) In case you didn’t know, most English speakers saw was spliced together with new footage starring Raymond Burr and is distinctly different from the uncut Japanese version, which is a fascinating piece of art coming from a culture having been recently nuked into near extinction and still reeling from the fear of radiation. Criterion’s beautifully restored BOTH versions, so I can’t recommend this disc enough.

  1. you gotta see real steel it was great my only problem with it is yo dont actually see wolverine fight a robot himself

    1. i still have yet to see the original godzilla so that is on my buy list to, as soon as i have money to buy movies again

  2. Real Steel wasn’t bad, it did do the typical dad trying to reconnect with his son shtick. The fights were well done and the acting was solid enough for what the movie was. 7/10

  3. Personally I think everyone should buy 3 copies of Paranormal Activity 3… it has nothing to do with the fact my cousin directed it it all… srsly, just buy 4 copies okay?

    1. Just finished PA3. Fucking amazing flick. I don’t blame anyone for hating the PA movies; they are very challenging, but I love them. 3 upped the ante just enough without jumping the shark.

  4. Real Steel was my Best Picture choice until the nomination list came out, based solely on the fact that the movie started with a robot punching the shit out of a bull.

  5. Real Steal was fun, but not necessarily great. Basically it’s exactly what you expect it to be… Also, Godzilla RULES!

  6. Real Steel? More like Real Snore! Or more like Real steal of my money…

Ok, in all honesty I saw Real Steel in Theaters at Midnight. I slept through half the movie and asked my friend if this or that happened in the plot. Turns out I was right on all of my half baked predictions. I’m sorry their was nothing great or bad about the film at all.

  7. Real steel is kind of hilariously bad..the villains are Russians and Japanese with thick accents! 50/50 on the other hand is amazing. Definitely worth watching.
