BIG GAME SALES: Heavy Hitters like Gears of War 3, Assassin’s Creed: Revelations and Final Fantasy XIII-2 and more have been reduced to under $20!

Star Trek: The Next Generation – Season 1 Blu-ray
You don’t have to be a Star Trek or even a TNG fan to appreciate just how fantastic this Blu-ray release is on a technical level. Here’s a show filmed long, long ago during the final analog frontier. Productions shot digitally and on film are far easier to restore in High Definition, but as a smaller-budgeted TV show, TNG didn’t have that luxury. A lot of the show was shot on murky of-the-era video stock once thought to be forever doomed to Standard Def, so all you have to do is take one look at the any comparison shot nerds are juxtaposing throughout the web to appreciate the seemingly impossible goal Paramount is pulling off. Imagine talking that footage of you on the Slip N’ Slide your dad filmed on a camcorder the size of Run DMC’s first boombox. Then imagine the tape is stored in a studio warehouse the size of Comic-Coon’s convention center, and once you find the tape, you have to comb over every frame reduce the interlacing and enhance clarity 100 fold.

Click the image to see a galaxy of difference!

Paramount managed to track down every scrap of filmed TNG footage from a show that bowed almost two decades ago -this season specifically wrapped back in 1988!- and painstakingly restore it to something that look it was shot yesterday. (To put that in perspective, Laser Time hasn’t even existed a year and there are already elements and pieces of it lost forever.) Even if the 1st season of Next Gen ain’t your bag, this is still a process worthy of support (plus the price is more than fair considering the overhaul and original DVD seasons went for over twice as much.) I’m not even sure if any other old non-Star Trek shows will (financially) merit such a loving restoration, but a solid success for TNG could send a message to studios that says we’re willing to pay up to ensure our favorite programs from the 80s and 90s needn’t remain doomed to wallow in SD ugliness for the rest of eternity. Fraggle Rock: Just sayin’…

Game of Thrones: Season 1
Wha?! Are you confused? Didn’t the first season of George “Double R” Martin’s glorious union with Home Box Office release some months ago? So why a “new” edition? Oh, is it to add new features, or perhaps fix the somewhat heinous load times? Nope! Apparently, the producers recently dropped a factoid bomb in the commentary that pointed out they used the severed head of former President George W. Bush in one of the scenes. Not as a brash political statement, mind you. Simply because the wanted to use anything the production had lying around, so they found an unused Dubya noggin, slapped a wig on it, then stuck in on a pike, in a move to no doubt intimidate those Lannister scoundrels. This reissue does nothing but excise that brief scene entirely. Okay, one the one hand, early adopters like me are sitting on a bit of a collector’s item, on the other… does anybody seriously care about tarnishing the legacy of George W. Bush?! It seems to me that even hardline rightwingers treat him like the Poochy of US Presidents, and much like his detractors, are happy to forget he ever existed. Well, either way, the Bush Administration has made one last move to infuriate people with taste, and from beyond the grave, no less! Cheney, you magnificent bastard!

Prototype 2
Wow, is this really the sole notable video game release of the week? Prototype 2’s a great game and all, but this is a downloadable PC port of a something that came out months ago… oh well, at least it’s ten buck cheaper than the console versions. And if you’re in the market for less-than-new games, please note that heavy hitters like Gears of War 3, Assassin’s Creed: Revelations, and Final Fantasy XIII-2 have been reduced to less than $20 right here

Boss – Season 1
I began watching this show on Netflix Streaming and enjoyed it quite a bit. But if you’re like me, and didn’t watch the shows immediately, the were cruelly ripped off Netflix once its deal with Starz corroded. So now, it’s not like I have choice – I gotta buy the discs to finish watching this solid, mature saga of big city political corruption. For one, it’s great to see Fraiser Crane throwing his weight around like a hardass, all cursing and bangin’ prostitutes. More importantly, for me anyway, are the on-location shoots that only premium cable channels seem to bother with nowadays. Part of the reason Batman Begins and The Dark Knight look so visually distinct is that they were filmed largely in Chicago. It’s weird that this is such an uncommon practice, but those aforementioned films even subconsciously resonate in my brain as defiantly “not LA or New York,” and here, it also makes Boss’ locations appear unlike any I’ve seen before.

  1. Been so hooked on Walking Dead and Irredeemable (that one’s thanks to you guys), so I might return the favor and buy some of them through Amazon. Great show dudes, opening my eyes to a lot of new things to try!

  2. Im so happy I got GoT before they edited it. I think it is just the dumbest thing that could have happened from that situation. It wasn’t a political decision, it was a “oh damn, we need a head” situation.

  3. I have only watched a few episodes of Star Trek The Next Generation but I love what i’ve seen I really need to pick the bluray up.

  4. It’s my birthday, and all I got was a charger to my broken Laptop. I’d love that gift card.

  5. Huh, definitely glad I already have the unedited version of season 1 of Game of Thrones then. I don’t really see the need to edit such a small thing out.

Also, I wish Amazon would get Ogre and Kunimitsu for Tekken Tag 2. I really don’t care for Angel or Michelle Chang, and I certainly don’t want to have to pre-order from Gamestop.

  6. Awesome deals this week actually. My friend would probably love to get his hands on that Star Trek TNG Bluray set. I’m more interested in GoT these days but I have never seen any of it or read the books so I might just have to look into it a bit more it seems.

    1. Oh, come now. “W” *was* the Poochy of presidents.

Luckily he’s off to his home planet now.

  7. I’m glad you guys put Batman: Court of Owls amazon link on here, I bought it, so should everyone else.

  8. That is a weirdly amusing photoshop to me for some inexplicable reason…
Anyway, I’d buy that TNG bluray in a second if it was reasonably priced. Too bad nothing involving Star Trek ever is :/

  9. I made the dumb mistake of buying those $120 TNG box sets when they were first released on DVD, and then the whole lot were re-released for a lot less money.

I’m going to buy a box set of the whole series instead of watching and re-watching the first two derpy seasons again and again.

  10. Ha ha ha! That Next Generation picture!

I didn’t plan on buying Next Generation on Blu-ray just yet, but after looking at it on Amazon and seeing that it’s so cheap… looks like I’ve gotta go ahead and get it. Damn.

  11. Huh, I have been meaning to check out Next Gen after hearing Brelston sing its praises for-what- three years now? It’s a sign.

  12. While I love TNG, I dont know if I could watch it all over again. that just seems exhausting. Although I am currently watching the West Wing now that it’s on amazon prime instant.

  13. I’m still waiting for the last two seasons of the Muppet Show to come out on DVD or BluRay, and more Animaniacs. Is there much chance that all the ST:TNG season will make it out?

  14. Just watched the first disc of TNG Blu-ray and it looks amazing, totally worth the £50 that I spent on it through the Lasertime Amazon links

  15. Kelsey Grammar has another show? I’m surprised he doesn’t just relax on the beach with all that Cheers/Fraiser money.

  16. Oh man, Prototype 2. Remember Free Radical kids? The fact that Prototype 2 is the sole release this week bugs me. And if I could complain about pre-order bonuses for the fourth week in a row, how bad have you sold out to include a fucking Sprite sponsored anything in a basketball game? Ugh.

    1. They would be able to retire from the cash I have forgotten to spend through their links. Feel like such a fool but I forget half the time.

  17. I’m likely to go on a Batman spree in the next few days and you can bet your sweet asses I’ll shop through you guys.

  18. Hey guys, just wondering if you get any kickback from me ordering through the Amazon links in the UK after I’ve switched territory?

  19. Well guess its finally time to hit that Last Story link. TNG looks amazing but 60$ feels a bit expensive right now.

  20. Thanks for the link to those amazon game sales. Some of those deals are pretty good. I think I’ll pick up AC Revelations for $18.
