Vidjagame Apocalypse 19 – 1 Million Enemy Crabs

VGA_19_0611

This week we recorded our show before everyone left for E3, so we went light on speculation and instead counted down the most memorable moments from the expo’s past. Also, did you know there are new games coming out while everyone is obsessing about games that won’t be out for months? It’s true! Last of Us and Animal Crossing: New Leaf are either out or coming soon, and we talk about both, plus a little State of Decay (because we missed it last week) and your earliest gaming memories.

Question of the Week

Assuming you’re paying attention to E3 this week, what have you seen that you’re most excited for?

*NOTE* We’ve been getting some AMAZING donations lately but hardly anyone is attaching a name and the intended recipient of said donations. Please try to make note of which podcast the donation is going to so maybe we can get some new equipment and thank the right people for all their support. Seriously, the laptop we edit this show on is one choking breath away from combustion.

  1. QOTW: Assuming that it isn’t tied in to the upcoming film reboot, Mad Max by Just Cause developers Avalanche Studios caught my attention. Considering they leaned their lesson with the first Just Cause, improving upon its ideas and how to make a sandbox game endlessly fun, with that aspect already in good hands maybe that they can now also craft a descent story. That and a Mad Max game is long overdue since its many conventions and stylistic choices have been borrowed by games for decades.

    1. By the way I find it both odd and amusing that my answer to last week’s question of the week stopped the podcast for a moment… not sure why, standard answer… maybe that was it actually.

  2. Bayonetta 2. I should put that in all caps BAYONETTA 2!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
oh and Final Fantasy Versus 13 now just Final Fantasy 15 looks nice
    oh and Kingdom Hearst 3
oh and Mega Man in Smash Bros

    but mostly BAYONETTA 2!!!!

  3. I’m so excited for everything Nintendo coming our way. It just fills a hole in my heart that none of the other systems/companies do. Currently playing Animal Crossing (loving it) and I can’t wait for Smash/New DKC/Mario Kart/New 3D Mario/Pokemon X-Y/Zelda HD, etc.

Playstation and XBONE both have things I’m interested in both nothing compares to the deluge of Nintendo stuff for me.

    1. I believe you mean Battlefield 4. Dragon Age 3 [insert Monty Python joke] could be amazing. But 2 should have been and wasn’t, so I’ll stay wary of it for now.

        1. And incidentally, Dragon Age II was never meant to be more than an Awakening-style expansion that got “promoted” to sequel, or an idea that wasn’t ready for the limelight. Either way, they had less than two years to make a top-class RPG. They failed, obviously, and nearly killed the brand.

  4. QOTW:
It seems like Sony managed to use Microsoft’s weaknesses to their advantage. After quite possibly forcing them to reveal the Xbone early, they managed to capitalize on their failings at E3, mostly on the whole “used games” shenanigan.
Personally, they’ve sold me so far on the PS4 and its claim to be primariily a gaming console, and not an “All in one entertainment system”.

As for games, the new Mirror’s Edge has potential if it doesn’t have a god-awful story to shove down my throat.

  5. Even though it wasn’t actually shown, the peggle 2 announcement got me so excited. watching the popcap guy jump up with a fist in the air, with ode to joy playing, and a rainbow of lights, yeah, it’s pretty hard not to get excited for that.

in terms of things that were actually shown though, smash bros looks rad, the playstation indie game display was really cool, and the mirror’s edge/sunset overdrive trailers were tight.

  6. A lot of stuff this year looks super cool.
Titanfall has me very excited, The Crew looks like an awesome Fast and Furious-like game and Destiny has me super pumped as well.

  7. As a massive Smash Bros and Mega Man fan I, as a 30 year man, wept and made the most retarded spastic noises you can imagine during Mega Man’s reveal. Also Jigglypuff now being a fairy type has given me Pokeblueballs and I can’t wait for October.

  8. why dont we just blurry the kinect eye with some vaseline? just censor ourselves to the corporations/ whats the worst that could happen? a box of vaseline on my doorstep? haha

  9. QOTW: The Wii Fit lady being announced as a new fighter in Super Smash Bros.

  10. I’d say PS4 in general. Now that more information is out on PS4 and XBONE I won’t even consider Xbox One and I will likely grab a PS4 on release (which as a long time 360 gamer feels so odd to say). I’m still stunned PS4 is the cheaper of the two. Smash Brothers is a system seller for me so I’m looking forward to that. Watch Dogs is still the game upcoming this year I’m most excited about.

  11. I’m excited for KI but not so much for the Xbone. Only games games I play on consoles are fighting games, I don’t like FPS on consoles or stealth games, so having to connect every 24 hours will be a pain for tournament organizers of any genre. I’m sure nintendo’s games will be good (I hate the Zelda games though, well beside Z2.) Infamous Second Son might be my top pickTransistor looks hype as well. also Tekken Rev. Only dissappointment was no new Hudson’s Adventure Island, I mean c’mon already.

  12. Looking forward to smash brothers on the 3ds, Gran turismo 6, and diablo 3 for ps3 or ps4. (And if jazz man Tyler wilde is present at time of recording, let him know his elitist Pc gamer zingers are not appreciated in regards to me looking forward to diablo 3 on console) lol jk.

  13. Metal Gear Solid V. When Microsoft (and basically the whole of E3) started with actual gameplay I lost my bloody mind. Then KH3 and Bayonetta 2 were accompanied by lesser freakouts.

  14. QOTW: Well, I could say all the obvious ones (watchdogs, destiny etc.) However, Anne will be happy to hear that Ubisoft surprised the shit out of me with the crew. After seeing how sterile boring Forza was, the big ass open world and customization looked awesome. I did not expect to want a driving game so much.

  15. I feel a strange mix of pride, shame, sweat, fear, regret, happiness, and sexual arousal that I got Wikiparaz’s whiny nerd voice for my answer.

Should I be feeling any of these?

    1. Also QOTW: I screamed like a small child when I saw DICE was making a Star Wars Battlefront game

  16. Hey Tyler. I actually listen while I’m at the gym. My video card died in January so I’ve needed another hobby in the meantime. Some of us are far from brain dead meat heads.

Anyhow aside from being of the glorious PC gaming master race I’m pretty excited for the PS4 and even the Wii U isn’t looking so bad anymore.

  17. Mad Max, i have been looking forward to another great post apocalypse game since STALKER, and much to Mike’s i come from the land of dollarydoos so i can’t wait to see if they butcher the franchise more than thunderdome.

  18. as good as the games look this year, the moment that made me smile with the like a fool was the reveal that Sony would not impose the same restrictions as Microsoft, and even undercut the cost of their machine by $100. in a statement that at any other time would be completely unnecessary to announce, Jack Tretton reassured us that true ownership of one’s media is the right of the consumer, and not some unstable contract.

the gaming world breathed a collective sigh of relief, and the response from the crowd infectious and exhilarating. I know that Sony is ultimately just another big company like Microsoft, and that this was simply a smart business decision, but with it comes hope that games can continue to remain goods, and not just services.

as for the games, can you say Mega Man?

  19. the games this year, I mean my god. Metal Gear: how are games this good in my lifetime? Watch Underscore Dogs, Black Flag, Smash Bros, Final Fantasy, Destiny, Titanfall… and all those indie games

what an incredible time to play video games

  20. I play a lot of BF3, so…BF4. I’m pretty stoked for battlefront as well, and the biggest surprise is Titanfall because it actually looks fun.

  21. Wonderful 101 looks just wonderful. I had never watched any trailers before yesterday and I’m very intrigued now. It looks like fun for the sake of having fun, and I like it.

    1. Yeah. The most perfect example of a publisher not getting free-to-play or why it works, and being so completely out of touch with gaming realities. If you make a F2P game, you give players the full game and just offer tantalizing extras and speed-ups to make them part their cash. You DON’T give them a demo and ask for money for every single part of the game, then claim you know what you’re doing because “gamers always play the same fighters anyway” – wrong, gamers play ALL fighters first and gravitate to the ones that suit them best. For fuck’s sake, forget F2P, Microsoft don’t even get why people play fighting games!

  22. The Order: 1866 looks awesome from the brief trailer that was shown but I can’t wait to see more. Watch_Dogs on the other hand I can’t wait to see less of until I can actually play it all at once myself.

  23. Evan after some of the great announcements that came out of this E3 i’m still most excited for Destiny.

Watch Dogs is still sexy too.

  24. QOTW: The double-bill of massive open-world fantasy RPG goodness that Fall 2014 is bringing in the form of Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and Dragon Age: Inquisition (aka “Dragon Age: No Longer Has A Three In The Title Because That’ll Remind Everyone We Made Two”). I have faith in both teams and love both universes… however I admit I am deathly afraid that Bioware are going to ditch DA1 and 2’s strategy/tactical PC controls in favour of using the console hack-n-slash style in both versions. I found the combat in the console version of DA2 incredibly boring, but the PC version kept the style of Origins so I at least enjoyed that aspect (despite the game’s many other flaws).

  25. Personally I find it interesting that after 12 years of owning Xbox and Xbox 360 the PS4 is the thing I am most interested in. It just seemed much more appealing than anything the X bone had. Also, Destiny’s gameplay looked super cool and Battlefield 4 might get me to play the series again, which I have not played since Battlefield 2. The fact that another Star Wars Battlefront game is happening also gets me super excited.

  26. QOTW:
Megaman rising from his grave and joining the Smash Bros. roster and that it’s coming for the 3ds

  27. Okay let me start off by saying I fucking love you guys and this podcast and I’ve been a fan of yours since the first tdar. Now with a little bit of criticism: What is up with the constant cynicism? It’s one thing to talk about a game’s mechanical and gameplay issues constructively, but to go for 5 to ten minutes about how the fact that you can’t go to the second floor of every building and how that breaks the immersion just seems like you guys hate the game and are just looking for the tiniest things about the game to shit on, especially since you start off by saying you loved it. I’ve finished the last of us, and none of the things you guys complained about really bothered me at all. In fact I never really noticed them bec9ause the rest of it was so fucking incredible.
In short, I love you guys, but maybe don’t shit on games you love all the time.

  29. QOTW: The ps4 in general. In terms of games bf4, watch dogs and ac4. Also the division

  30. The announcement that’s got me the most excited I’d say is Mirror’s Edge 2. I love the first game and honestly never expected the franchise to continue despite the constant rumours. As for the new consoles, this is probably the most contested console purchase desicion I’ve ever had to make but I am starting to lean towards the PS4.

  31. As someone with Panzer in my name, I’m most excited for Crimson Dragon. It had been months since we had heard anything about this game. I’m glad they put in controller support and trust they can get the controls right before launch. Even if they don’t, I will buy it and evangelize this game to high heaven, because I love that series (even if it isn’t an official Panzer game because SEGA is too stupid to utilize that license) and it’s rare to get a AAA on rails shooter anymore.

  32. This probably won’t get read by anyone, but I just wanted to drop a line saying I miss Anne being co-main-host. I never got a chance to say it because I don’t have twitter and she doesn’t have an email or an anon tumblr/formspring thing. Despite complaining about her laugh in the earlier episodes, she quickly became a favourite and she better be back for every other episode!

  33. It has to be Mirrors Edge 2. I have watched that trailer over and over again and can’t wait to play it when it gets released (Whenever that is) In terms of games with game play demos, probably Battlefield 4 and Destiny. The Division also looked interesting, it seems Ubisoft has a surprise each year! Titianfall didn’t really appeal and certainly wasn’t a system seller for me, especially with the rumors that its only a year long exclusive. Overall i’m just excited for a new generation of awesome games!

  34. I was excited most by the whole attitude of Sony at this e3, they just seemed to get it as far as where my interests in gaming have been going and I was super happy to see so many smaller developers getting time during their conference and getting pushed by them in general. Hope that works for Sony and they all make a load of money so we can keep getting that kind of support for the little dudes out there, either way it has me much more interested in the ps4 than I am in the xbone.

That said I will probably grab a wiiu before either of the new systems as this is generally the time when nintendo systems start getting a stream of good games and that looked like it will be the case this time as well after seeing what they were showing.

Also DuckTales, wooo-ooo! Was too young to play the game but always enjoyed the re-runs of that show and dang that music.

  35. I’m excited that Shuhei Yoshida likes the Oculus Rift. And when Engadget asked him whether the PlayStation 4 might support it in the future, he only offered a “No comment” with a big smile.

    That would be pretty sweet.
