Think you can be the prediction champion for WWE’s Night of Champions? Prove it by testing your predictive mettle against Dave and make your mark on the next Cheap Popcast episode!
Hey all! If you haven’t heard the Summerslam Cheap Popcast, I’m continuing the grand tradition of predicting the results of a pre-determined event! Even though I was at Summerslam, I didn’t have a clue what was gonna happen, as I only got half of the matches right, but my incorrect prediction of a Sandow cash-in gave me a 3-out-of-8 score. On the complete opposite end of the spectrum is SerpentineZero, who not only nailed 6 of the 8 matches (including the exact finish for RVD and Nattie’s wins), he also successfully predicted a cash-in, giving him a 7-out-of-8 score. He chose Rob Conway’s very… odd theme. This one will appear in our Night of Champions episode which will go up within the next few days.
Wrestling fans like to think they’re in the know, and what better way to prove it than by testing your predictive mettle against me! Here’s how it goes. I’m going to make my predictions in this here article, and then open up the replies to you awesome listeners. You will then pick a winner (or in a rare case draw/double DQ) for each match (don’t worry about getting the finish right, I’m just looking for winners), and then, just in case there’s a tie for correct predictions, pick a running time for the final match listed (the presumed main event) as a tiebreaker. With Money in the Bank briefcases at play, I’m adding a new twist. If you predict a cash-in, and it doesn’t happen, you lose a point. If you get it right, however, you gain two! You only need predict whether someone cashes in or not, not whether it’s successful. I think that should make things interesting. Or maybe I’ve scared everyone off from including a cash-in. We’ll see…
What does the winner get? Well, you can make your mark on the next Cheap Popcast episode by choosing the next show’s closing theme. Pick the wrestler theme and include a YouTube URL to a wrestler’s theme alongside your predictions and I’ll give you a shout-out before throwing to our episode-ender. Let’s kick off the predictions!
TAG TEAM TURMOIL FOR TAG TITLE SHOT: THE PRIME TIME PLAYERS VS TONS OF FUNK VS THE USOS VS 3MB VS THE REAL AMERICANS
Here’s how this one works; you get one point for correctly guessing the winner of the this pre-show match, and another for correctly predicting whether The Shield will win or lose later on (regardless of whether the team you picked earlier is the one who beats or loses to The Shield). Frankly, despite the amount of entrants in this match, I can only see one prevailing due to their recent face turn and notoriety, so The Prime Time Players win. However, The Shield needs to look dominant just a little bit longer, so I say The Shield wins later in the night, building towards a bigger PTP win down the line.
US TITLE MATCH: DEAN AMBROSE (CHAMP) VS DOLPH ZIGGLER
Poor Ziggy. I was at the Raw where he was on top of the world, scoring his first (legit) World Title. Now he’s pulled a Jericho and is competing for a lesser title. The silver lining is that Ambrose going over gives the title a bit more respectability it so desperately needs. Ambrose pins Ziggler.
DIVAS TITLE MATCH: AJ LEE (CHAMP) VS NATALYA VS BRIE BELLA VS NAOMI
Why is this match happening now? The first half of Total Divas ends tonight, so it makes no sense for any of that show’s stars to win without a show to promote for a few months. I’d like Natalya to get some respect back, but I think they stay the course and AJ wins. Hopefully we get some NXT callups soon.
WORLD TITLE MATCH: ALBERTO DEL RIO VS ROB VAN DAM
Another month, another title match that RVD’s soon-to-be-part-time status futzes up. Unlike last month’s match, I do like the many opportunities this match opens up. Ricardo turning heel again? Post-match Sandow cash-in? I say neither of those happen, but we do see RVD win the title so that at least one face has a belt. A Sandow cash-in won’t happen as Ricardo keeps him at bay, but it’ll be used in the next month, I bet.
HANDICAP MATCH: CM PUNK VS CURTIS AXEL AND PAUL HEYMAN
Punk’s made of teflon, so he could conceivably get pinned by Heyman after some weird schmozziness (a new Heyman Guy?), but I think he needs to have closure to this storyline before hopping back into the title mix. Plus, he’s gotta get a win here before he jobs to Orton, so I say Punk wins..
WWE TITLE MATCH: RANDY ORTON (CHAMP) VS DANIEL BRYAN
This angle is far too big for Bryan to get the belt back so quickly. The earliest I say he wins it is Survivor Series. In fact, I bet that even earning a title shot after his guaranteed rematch becomes a big story for Bryan, so I say (after some screwiness) that Orton pins Bryan to retain in a 22:00 match.
Alright, there’s my picks. Sound off below with your match predictions, (including the Orton-Bryan running time) as well as a YouTube link to your wrestler theme pick. Good luck, everyone!
