Vidjagame Apocalypse 110 – Mouthiest Mascots with Dan Amrich

Our longtime friend Dan Amrich (of Palette-Swap Ninja and Critical Path) joins us this week, and we repay him by making him suffer through counting down five of the loudest, chattiest, most obnoxious cartoon characters ever to headline a platformer. Then there’s some excitement over the return of Broken Age; a lot of chat about recent Konami, Valve, and Hatred news; and a fond look at your favorite Star Wars games.

Question of the Week

What’s the most embarrassing (or best) piece of fan art you’ve ever created? (Anything you drew as a child totally counts.)

*NOTE* We’ve been getting some AMAZING donations lately but hardly anyone is attaching a name and the intended recipient of said donations. Please try to make note of which podcast the donation is going to so maybe we can get some new equipment and thank the right people for all their support.

Theme song by Matthew Joseph Payne. Break song is Arcade Gaming Shrine by Palette-Swap Ninja. Haunting and beautiful New Releases Theme by David B. Cooper.

  1. Yay for the return of Ban Ramdick! Jokey nicknames aside, always loved hearing Dan on shows in the past so this should be a fun one.

  2. QOTW: As an angst filled twelve year old, I made a sweet ass drawing of me and Cloud from FF7 holding matching buster swords. It was terrible and looked like shit but it happened.

Yay for Dan being on! Can’t wait to listen!

  3. Eh I drew a picture of mario ripping off sonics head which got printed in (cue antista’s cockney irish Australian accent) “hyper” magazine.
Embarrassed of it now, as an older gamer I have alot more admiration and respect for sega

  4. as a child I drew a series of pictures titled “bad mario” which was basically Mario if his fire flower power up turned him into a serial arsonist.

  5. Man, I loved Gex 2 when I was 19. It has aged very badly, mostly because of d-pad-only controls for a 3d game and shoulder-button-only camera. There’s nothing badly wrong with the mechanics or level design, just technology rendered it unplayable because it was built pre-dual shock.

As for why marquee classic games like X-Wing and System Shock 2 go to Gog a month before Steam, I am pretty sure that Gog are involved in the optimization process and the exclusive window is a condition of that.

  6. QotW:

I once spent an entire day of my summer vacation designing power ups and enemies for Super Mario Bros 4. This was obviously before Super Mario World existed. I think that I may have actually come up with the ice flower before Nintendo, but the other embarrassing stuff I came up with doesn’t make up for that. I think that you could not only be “Super Mario” but eating a second mushroom made you”Super Duper Mario.” I’m not sure what that entailed other than a pallette swap and an extra hit point. I also came up with a little plant that had a face on it that had a bird the flew out and attacked Mario when he walked by that I called “George Bush and Dan Quail.” I thought that was incredibly clever when I was 10. I’m not sure what I was going to do with all my sprite designs and level ideas when I was done. Possibly send them to Nintendo?

  7. Years ago after playing the original Mario Party on the N64 at a friend’s house, I liked it so much that I was like, “wouldn’t it be cool to create my own imaginary boards for that game.” This led me to create create different themed Mario Party style boards with the red, blue, and Bowser circles and all based on things outside of Mario Party. For example, the one I remember the most that I created was a board on paper based on the 90’s cartoon The Wacky World of Tex Avery. I made all of the circles (except for the side ones leading to Bowser of course) create the shape of a cowboy’s hat. My mother unfortunately however discovered them and threw them all way because she thought I was becoming too obsessed with videogames. That’s why I can’t share them with you now, and honestly it’s sad to me because maybe I could’ve made an actually awesome board game some time ago if I didn’t have that discouragement thrown at me at that time.

  8. Wow, Dan was just outstanding on this episode. So much energy! Please have him back as often as he’ll come.

  9. I was lucky enough to avoid Bug when I purchased my Saturn and went with Skelton Warriors instead. I do remember playing Bug on my PC years later via some free disc giveaway that also included comiczone. Does anyone else remember these releases? They came in a cardboard sleeve but the artwork matched that of the official releases.

    1. Awesome thanks for posting this! Sounded super interesting and I was hoping I wouldn’t have to vaguely google for it…

  10. X3
ohmahgawd! this makes me SO HAPPY to hear him again with you guys!
it makes me double happy to hear you guys talk about the fact that BOTH he and Shane listen to the podcasts. this was a good episode. and hearing a Palette Swap Ninja song at the break really took me back.
    “sigh” ~ memoreeeeeeeeeeeeiz…

  11. Chris you keep talking about military shooters being the only dependable thing in the gaming industry, but besides call of duty and battlefield no one else is doing it anymore.
