Vidjagame Apocalypse 133 – Survival Horror for Kids

We’re big fans of Halloween around these parts, so this week’s show kicks off a full month of horror-themed shows, starting safe and slow with five survival-horror games (seemingly) intended for children. Then it’s time to talk about Transformers: Devastation, Super Meat Boy and Uncharted before providing half-informed analysis of the Star Citizen debacle and talking about your ideal video-game dance partners.

Question of the Week

Have you ever injured yourself while playing a video game? Tell us about it.

Theme song by Matthew Joseph Payne. Break song is “Ghost-Busters” Theme by Diane Hildebrand and Jackie Mills. Raccoon break music is Laser Time Theme 8-Bit by Matthew Tucciarone and dotflist. Haunting and beautiful New Releases Theme by David B. Cooper.

  1. QotW: A couple of years ago, I worked in a horribly oppressive office environment that I hated. One of the ways that I coped besides listening to Laser Time was to go to the restroom and sneak a quick Tetris game in one of the stalls. One day I was doing spectacularly well at Tetris and my feet went to sleep while I was sitting in the stall pretending the break was for biological reasons rather than reasons of sanity. When I stood up, I couldn’t stand on my numb feet and fell and hit my head on the latch to the stall. I apparently got a scratch on my head and didn’t know it. It started bleeding and my coworker acted as if I had some sort of massive gaping headroom causing me to have to report my injury to HR.

  2. Mikel isn’t joking about that Dreamcast d-pad. A couple years ago a buddy and I broke out Project Justice and had to take turns in the arcade mode to give each other’s thumbs a rest. It just ruins you.

  3. really good episode!
you guys really sat down at got to business but kept it balanced with the funny.
I haven’t heard you guys do a real roundtable discussion in a long time.

  4. Maybe 6 or 7 years ago, i used to work at Gamestop, and randomly picked up a copy of the newly released Arcana Heart for PS2 thinking it would be a laughable moe-fighter joke for perverts… I really ended up enjoying the unique “homing” system, which allows for limited FLIGHT to follow up combos from anywhere on screen. Add to that the ability to stock all the way up to 9 super bars, and arenas three screens wide by three high, and it totally grabbed me in a way I hadn’t felt from a 2D fighter since first playing Guilty Gear X on the Dreamcast.

I ended up playing it for 6 hours straight, and with such intensity, that I needed an icepack for my forearm… what stopped me was a firey pain shooting up the fingers of my right hand, all the way to my elbow with every single button press.

Of course my co-workers the next day gave me shit for having messed up my forearm while playing a game prominently featuring anime high school girls. What a bunch of assholes, right?

  5. “Someone from HR would never say that.” HR just happens to be Chris Robert’s wife. So it is not like she has some accountability or anything.

And the justice department investigates and sometimes sues racists companies on the weekly. I like you Chris, but stop blindly defending horrible practices because they “don’t sound right”.

  6. Zombies ate my neighbours is the only ever game my mom reacted to me playing as a kid.

“You are not playing this violent filth in my house, young man!”

Made me walk down to the rental place and hand it back. And she’s seen me play some way worse stuff than this. Don’t know what it was about it.

  7. Man, I really wish Nintendo would get their shit together and realize that devoting some time and effort to a strong VC collection would pay off because I want to go out and replay Luigi’s Mansion but I can’t because there’s no place outside of an old Gamecube and a disc to do so.

But anyway, my own horrible injury involve being hit by the WoW train during my sophomore year of college. There were no survivors.

  8. Very fun episode, though the tangent on Bayonetta gave me an epiphany: Bayonetta is to video game fanservice as Spec Ops: The Line is to dudebro war shooters. It is what it is while simultaneously mocking for you for eating this shit up, and they’re awesome for it.

  9. Hurt myself gaming. It probably happened to a few more people but I was cut from my N64 controller. Remember the joystick? Did it ever break on you? Yep mine did. I can’t recall what I was playing I want to say it Smash Bros since that was my biggest joystick used game. I remember the top/tip of the joy stick snapping off then my thumb pressed down and slide to the right. The metal that was sticking out of the joystick punctured my thumb then the movement to the right ripped open my thumb. Now it wasn’t like my whole thumb was gone but more of a very DEEP but small hole. No stitches needed but it bled for a REALLY long time. Since the controllers were pricy I was not able to get a new one for a few months. I could not stop playing games so we put electrical tape on it to keep from cutting ourselves when we played.
