The Best New Amazon Releases: Giant Bugs Vs. Ant-Man

The last worthwhile games of the year are out this week, along with some big ass movies, and some really great anime deals to boot…

We’ve now entered the interesting, stressful period between Thanksgiving and the end of the year. This is when we’re buying gifts and attending parties, while also wrapping up work ahead of time so we’ll be able to take the holidays off with a clear conscience. This is also a time when Blu-ray releases pick up while games dry up. Honestly, this is the last week any video game of note is released on disc for close to a month. Take a look at what releases are closing out the year, plus take a look at some really impressive deals as we count down the final days of 2015. And don’t forget, buying anything through our Amazon links helps support Laser Time at no extra cost to you…

Earth Defense Force 4.1: The Shadow of New Despair
Easily the gaming highlight of the week, it’s the newish entry in the long-running giant bug battling series, now getting its first appearance on a new-gen console. This series is one of the more beloved cornball games around, with fans loving its unapologetic approach to the simplistic concept of futuristic military battling massive insects. Earth Defense Force 4.1 is an expansion of EDF 2025 from a few years back, promising 50% new content and upgraded visuals on the PS4. The early reviews have been positive for EDF’s newest installment, so if you’ve been waiting to start killing bugs but on a newer console, the time has come.

Devil’s Third
This game is unkillable, though based on international reviews, that might not be a good thing. Announced over half a decade ago with plans to be published by a now defunct company, Devil’s Third finally arrives on the Wii U in North America this week. This game has been the focus of Tomonobu Itagaki ever since he left Ninja Gaiden and Tecmo behind in 2008, but was this hyper-violent action game worth the wait? Well, it’s been out in Europe and Japan for weeks and the reviews were… not nice… It’s currently got a 44 on Metacritic, though let’s see where it’s at once US journalists weigh-in. Though it’s telling enough that Nintendo of America has barely done anything to advertise or showcase Devil’s Third. The silence is a bit deafening. On the plus side, looks like Laser Time may have a new shit show candidate.

Brunswick Pro Bowling
There’s a brand new bowling game on the Xbox One, but why should anyone give a fig about that? Well, because I think I’ve done more to make this brand famous than anyone else out there. Many years ago we put on a radioplay parody of Christmas Carol where I played Tiny Tim and, in my best (worst) Dickensian accent said “Brunswick Bowling.” So, in the interest of staying true to my online brand – while also not mentioning by name my former employer – I’m happily promoting the existence of a new bowling game for Microsoft’s new-gen system. God bless us, everyone.

HORI Real Arcade Pro 4 Kai Silent Fight Stick
There’s a new Street Fighter on the horizon, and that means high level fighting game players might be on the lookout for a new fight stick. With Street Fighter V a console exclusive on PS4, players might be ready to drop some serious cash on this new version of the HORI deck that’s compatible with both PS4 and PS3. Or, if you’re more into Mad Catz’s approach to comtroller creation, this week also sees the release of Mad Catz Street Fighter V Chun-Li Arcade Fight Stick Tournament Edition 2. Neither are all that cheap, but are probably worth it for folks who can’t settle for gamepad inputs.

Weeks after appeared on digital platforms, you can now buy the final film from Marvel’s Phase Two on Blu-ray. Many wondered if someone as goofy as Ant-Man, played by comedic pretty boy Paul Rudd, could work as a film, especially when big name director Edgar Wright quit the project. While we’ll never know what could’ve been, director Peyton Reed still put together a great little super-origin film that’s got a good sense of humor, and scales things back a little from the bombast of The Avengers. The sequel has already been announced, so why not get this one on your shelf? Unless, of course, you were waiting for…

Marvel Cinematic Universe: Phase 2 Collection
Have we really gone through another phase of MCU already? Now that Age of Ultron and Ant-Man are in the record books and we’re on the march to Civil War, it’s time to put all the movies in one place, preferably inside a box that looks like an important cosmic item. This Amazon exclusive set has Guardians, Ultron, Winter Soldier and the rest, plus a ton of snazzy extras. And if you want to complete the collection, Zon also still has the Marvel Cinematic Universe: Phase One collection in stock as well.

WWE: Owen – Hart of Gold
As someone who lived through the life and death of Owen Hart, this might be a little too heavy for me. Owen was an impressive athlete who never reached the top level of pro wrestling, but did his best with what he was given. His career came to an end with a stupid stunt gone horribly wrong, and the tragedy has come to overshadow his career highlights. Perhaps this documentary will finally correct that imbalance, though it definitely feels weird to see it produced by WWE of all people, though since the company owns most of the Owen Hart footage out there, I suppose they’re the only ones who could. And the extras all sound pretty impressive, at least for the Blu-ray version.

X-Files: The Complete Season 1 [Blu-ray]
We’re days away from the premiere of a new season of X-Files, so it’s way past time to re-explore the series on HD disc. Sure, you can find it on multiple streaming services, but is that the same as having a collection of discs on your shelf for each and every season? Fox is putting all of X-Files on Blu-ray this week, even the seasons with T-1000 where you stopped watching! You can get them all individually, or altogether in the complete series set.

Miyazaki fans should not miss this one!

The Collected Works of Hayao Miyazaki
Hayao Miyazaki is the most celebrated animator of the last 50 years, and for good reason. Films like My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki’s Delivery Service, and Princess Mononoke are some of the most fully realized worlds ever shown in theaters, capturing the hearts of people from just about every age and part of the planet. Now that he’s retired, Amazon has an exquisite looking special collection of every feature length film Miyazaki directed all in one box set. Plus, there are some fantastic bonuses as well that will likely justify the price. Out this November, this looks like a great gift for those you love most.

  1. I would love to see $MLG$ Antista kick some alien bug ass on an Earth Defense Force 4.1 stream! Who knows it may convince me to buy it via an Amazon link.

  2. Oh man that Devil’s Third box art is the kind of terrible we just don’t get see as much anymore.

Dude way too close to the camera’s personal space holding a sword, world on fire, demon face, ninjas fighting in the logo, neck tattoo and tooth necklace. And to top it off two different reflections in the sunglasses, Earth and Washington.

Its a Worst Box Art Miracle!
