The Best New Amazon Releases: Fantastic Four Still Exists

Video games are pretty much done for the year, but Blu-rays are still pretty busy as 2015 winds down…

Star Wars: The Force Awakens is nearly upon us, as are less commercial events like Christmas. Seriously, you can’t turn a corner in a grocery store without seeing at least two branded Star Wars products, and why not? I haven’t seen nerds this excited for something since Phantom Menace’s release. While we hope things go better this time, at the moment let’s also think about how Amazon’s new releases have cooled down a bit, even as deals are coming fast and furious – follow the Laser Time Twitter account to see all the best ones. In the meantime, here’s this week’s stuff, and remember, buying things through those links helps out LT at no extra cost to you…

Disney Infinity 3.0 Edition: Star Wars The Force Awakens Play Set
Disney Infinity 3.0 fulfilled its destiny of adding classic Star Wars figures to the toys-to-life game series/money printing machine. Finally Han Solo, Captain America, Mickey Mouse, and Capt. Jack Sparrow could all hang out in the same game. But that’s the Star Wars of the past. What about ones starring hip, millennials and their spherical droids? The release of The Force Awakens in theaters is also when the leads of the film got added to the game, starting with the supposed leads of Episode VII, Rey, Finn, and B-88. You may lack context for their life stories, but who cares? Don’t their Infinity figures look cool!?!

Disney Infinity 3.0 Edition: Star Wars The Force Awakens Kylo Ren Figure
I’m still not convinced this isn’t all a big hoax and that’s Luke Skywalker under that mask, though that’s probably just what JJ Abrams wants us to think. Anywho, Disney Infinity has toys for Force Awakens beyond just the starter pack, and on a week as dead as this one for games, they get two spots. Though do people still think his three pronged lightsaber is stupid? I forgot if the geek collective unconscious changed its mind on that.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel – Lionheart Edition
A game that isn’t a Star Wars toy? It could only be a late in the year Vita release. If you didn’t know, Legend of Heroes is a series that dates back to 1989, and Trails of Cold Steel is Falcom’s eighth entry in the core series. Though this is just part one of a trilogy that equals to the eighth entry. Look, its a niche JRPG, don’t try to make sense of it. But, if you love hardcore role-playing with all the attendant Japanese tropes, this should fill your holiday break nicely.

Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation
Shit. This entry on the list reminds me that I really meant to see Rogue Nation in theaters, but didn’t. Gosh, I feel so stupid. Well, looks like I can see Tom Cruise risk his life (fictionally and literally) on Blu-ray now. It’s always fun to watch Cruise pal around with Simon Pegg while also doing his best to resist the effects of aging. Unfortunately, we have nearly 20 years of Mission: Impossible films that prove he has aged, as the new Blu-ray box set can attest. Well, until the prince of Scientology actually does die during a nutty M:I stunt, these films will still be entertaining spectacles.

Fantastic Four
Good lord, why did I watch this movie? And why, right afterwards did I eat a Fantastic Four meal at Denny’s? Clearly I’m a moron, and I’d be just as dumb to buy this utter trainwreck of a mismanaged film. The story behind-the-scenes seems more interesting than the film itself, but you’ll likely see none of that here. You also won’t see anything that looks like the cover, a scam if ever there was one. However, this movie was SUCH a fiasco that it’s worth owning just to remember it while Fox and Marvel do their best to pretend it never happened.

Ted 2
Despite my whining about Fantastic Four, I’d watch it three more times before Ted 2. Then again, I’d also prefer to watch Seth MacFarlane cackle over a giant pile of money than watch warmed over Family Guy material starring a talking bear. Though I would definitely watch Ted 2 before attending a concert of Mr. MacFarlane’s mediocre crooning. What I’m saying is, I think Seth is one of the most successful scams in American comedy, and if you’re into his very average, meaningless profanity that masquerades as socially relevant, then please, grab Ted 2 and add another $20 to Seth’s pile of money.

Space Adventure Cobra Movie
Now here’s a silly production worth your time. Space Adventure Cobra is an early ’80s anime gem based on a manga of the same name, starring an outer space scoundrel with an arm that transforms into a laser gun. Not only was it featured in a Matthew Sweet video from the ’90s, but Hayao Miyazaki himself was part of the animation team. This new HD edition is a good excuse for aging anime fans like myself to rediscover the film.

Miyazaki fans should not miss this one!

The Collected Works of Hayao Miyazaki
Hayao Miyazaki is the most celebrated animator of the last 50 years, and for good reason. Films like My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki’s Delivery Service, and Princess Mononoke are some of the most fully realized worlds ever shown in theaters, capturing the hearts of people from just about every age and part of the planet. Now that he’s retired, Amazon has an exquisite looking special collection of every feature length film Miyazaki directed all in one box set. Plus, there are some fantastic bonuses as well that will likely justify the price. Out this November, this looks like a great gift for those you love most.

  1. I know Ted 2 wasn’t great, but the anti-Seth MacFarlane sentiment that leaks from Laser Time is one reason why I’ll never support the LT Patreon.
