The Best New Amazon Releases: James Bond Shippuden

Daniel Craig’s exceedingly average Bond film arrives next to an underrated Naruto game and some classic Pokemon films!

Whew, we are so hung over from all the Super Bowl fun we had with all our sports-loving buddies. What? Not buying that? C’mon, the Super Bowl was an incredible event, not just for fans of football or Beyonce, but also Batman travel guides and Hulk fighting Ant-Man. Watching all those ads certainly put me in the mood for buying things, so it’s fortunate that a ton of new games and Blu-rays just came to Amazon. What’s all out this week? Read on and remember, if you buy anything through the links on this page, a little comes back to Laser Time at no extra cost to you. Ok, let’s jump in….

Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 4
We’d normally roll our eyes at another anime game (and spoiler-warning, we do that later in the article), but these games are different. CyberConnect2 has been doing something special with Naruto for a long time. The world famous ninja has had some of his best action games in the Ninja Storm series, and this fourth entry is momentous for two reasons. Not only is it the first Naruto game for PS4 and Xbox One, but it’s also based on the final Naruto stories, making this (seemingly) the final game in the series. Will CyberConnect2 stick the landing?

Assassin’s Creed Chronicles
In case you’ve heard, yes, these are the three digital-only Assassin’s Creed games and they’re now getting bundled altogether just as the last entry comes out. If you love the Ass Creed world and have been waiting patiently to see Russia, China, and India, all in 2.5D style. The games got alright reviews, and really, rumors say there won’t be another mainline Ass Creed until 2017, so Chronicles seems like the best you’re going to get for some time.

Dying Light: The Following – Enhanced Edition
Zombie games are so lousy in the market right now that I can understand if you overlooked this one about a year ago. But more than a few people thought Dying Light was underrated, and one of 2015’s secretly best games. What better time to give the game a second look than with a new release that bundles together the original game with a bunch of extras, including some new DLC? Hell, it can’t be any worse that those two Dead Island games.

Arslan: The Warriors of Legend
No offense to fans of this popular Japanese fantasy series, but I had no fucking clue Arslan existed until today. Not only that, but I didn’t know it had been adapted into an anime OR that said anime was being adapted into a game. But just what type of game? A Dynasty Warriors style spin-off from the team behind the Musou series at Koei-Tecmo. Yup, Warriors games are so big that you can’t even escape them in anime you’ve never heard of.

Daniel Craig may be my favorite James Bond of all time, and he deserves action-packed, sexy, well-acted, and smart films like Skyfall. Unfortunately, he got the sadly average Spectre. It was exciting to see Bond’s iconic recurring villains return to the franchise, and there some incredible looking setpieces in the movie, but it’s really disjointed and Christoph Waltz is a bit undercooked in what should be the role of a lifetime. There are many worse Bond films, but I’d say Spectre isn’t for non-Bond fans.

Crimson Peak
Add this to my shame pile of films from 2015. I really do wish I’d seen this throwback of terror that mixes scary thrills with the horrible mind games men can play on women. I mean, I’ll follow Guillermo del Toro just about anywhere he’ll take me, including a spooky mansion with Tom Hiddleston and Mia Wasikowska. Reportedly, if you don’t go in expecting it to be a pure horror film (it isn’t) you’ll really enjoy it all the more.

The Leftovers: Season 2
I’ve yet to see this show, but I’m including it because several Laser Time readers speak very highly of this series (I’m looking at you Landon). Supposedly it’s an incredibly intense series about a different kind of apocalypse that comes after 2% of the world’s population disappears. Some even say it’s the best drama currently on HBO. Now, if you don’t subscribe to the service, you can finally catch up on the second of three seasons on Blu-ray.

Pokémon: The Movies 1-3 Steelbook
Now this is a blast from the past. I’m not going to say the early Pokemon films are testaments to great animation, or even aged all that well, but I simply can’t unglue them from my intense nostalgia for when I first fell in love with Pokemon. All three of the first films set the template of meeting some new, major threat, often a secret legendary Pokemon. Then Ash, Pikachu, and the rest would save the day, whether it was Mewtwo or any other classic legendary. Watch along and rediscover these films in glorious HD.

Miyazaki fans should not miss this sale!

The Collected Works of Hayao Miyazaki
Hayao Miyazaki is the most celebrated animator of the last 50 years, and for good reason. Films like My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki’s Delivery Service, and Princess Mononoke are some of the most fully realized worlds ever shown in theaters, capturing the hearts of people from just about every age and part of the planet. Now that he’s retired, Amazon has an exquisite looking special collection of every feature length film Miyazaki directed all in one box set. Plus, there are some fantastic bonuses as well that will likely justify the price. Currently it’s less than $180, which is a fucking STEAL. If you love animation, BUY THIS.
